The Springboro High School football program is offering something that its residents and visiting Piqua patrons shouldn’t refuse today.

The final Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover contest for each school also is ticketed as part of the Chris Spielman Gridiron Classic.

Among the many areas the former Ohio State University and NFL linebacker has ventured into since retiring from playing is his most cherished labor of love, the Stephanie Spielman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

Schools partner with Spielman’s Classic to make money and raise funds by selling T-shirts that benefit the foundation. Stephanie Spielman died of breast cancer in 2009 at age 42. See the website sgcfootball.com for more information.

Here’s what else we know heading into Week 5 of the high school football season:

• Thurgood Marshall (4-0) probably won’t have four running backs surpass 1,000 yards, which they’ve done twice in the last six seasons. Still, Denzel Norvell and Veyante Copeland are well on their ways to cracking 2,000 yards.

The Cougars will need all that rushing power and more in a great challenge at Cincinnati Winton Woods (3-1) today. The Warriors have lost only to Wayne 30-20 in the opener and crushed Middletown, 51-13.

• Dixie has had just one winning season since 1983. However, at 4-0, the Greyhounds not only are in good position to bump up that single digit, but to also contend for a rare league title. Led by first-year coach Sam Watson, Dixie must be considered a legitimate SWBL Buckeye contender.

The Greyhounds will find out how they stack up against the SWBL Southwestern’s best at Brookville (3-1) tonight.

• Lakota West (4-0) has its best team since celebrated linebacker Jordan Hicks led the Firebirds to a 9-2 season in 2009. The Greater Miami Conference will be a little less cluttered at the top after Colerain visits Sycamore in a battle of unbeatens today.

• Greenville (1-3) has already lost to Tippecanoe (4-0) and Lebanon (3-1). Next up is GWOC Central defending champ and surging Centerville (2-2). This is the first season for the Green Wave (North) and West Carrollton (South) to compete for GWOC titles.

• Springfield presented new coach Eric Gillespie a delayed first victory by snapping a three-game skid to begin the season and taking out Troy 27-21.

• Jefferson (2-2) hasn’t had a season of note in a while. But the independent Broncos are in the mix for Division VI, Region 24 playoff berth at No. 12.

• The longest current regular-season win streak is 63 by Bucyrus Wynford. Covington is No. 3 at 26 straight wins.
