Springboro looking for another school board member amid board dispute

Dr. Darin Lunt, appointed last year after member’s resignation, resigns from board

Dr. Darin Lunt resigned from the Springboro school board Tuesday, citing the stress he and his family were suffering from as a result of an ongoing board dispute.

Lunt, an orthodontist, resigned effective immediately.

He resigned as the board is enmeshed in a dispute over Board Member Lisa Babb’s role in formation of a petition submitted to the board by a parents’ group.

“The events that have transpired in the last few days have put too much strain on my family to continue effectively serving on the board,” Lunt said in his resignation letter.

Last Thursday, Board President Dave Stuckey cited an email as proof of Babb’s “collusion” with the parents group.

Babb said she has been asked by the board to resign, but has so far declined.

In response, Karen DeRosa, a former employee also involved in forming the group, said the board violated the law by making public an email from Babb to the group.

Lunt was appointed last March, replacing Ron Malone, a former high school principal who resigned, citing the stress of the board position.

The other candidates were Stephanie Bindemann, Dan Gudz, Shawn Monk and Kenneth Williams.

“I want to thank Dr. Lunt for his service to our schools, our students and our community,” said board President David Stuckey. “As a parent, community member and business owner, Dr. Lunt offered a unique perspective and was a tireless advocate for our students.”

Superintendent Dan Schroer also thanked Lunt for his service.

“It has been my pleasure to work with Dr. Lunt in the year that I’ve been with the district,” Schroer said in a school statement. “He has been an outstanding leader of our schools. However, being a board member is a demanding job, and we respect the need for him to focus on his personal life at this time.”

The board has 30 days to replace Lunt.
