Republican state representative Steve Huffman said Friday that he will run for the Ohio Senate seat now held by Bill Beagle, who is barred by term limits from running for another term.

Huffman, a physician and former Miami County coroner, said he wants to continue in the Senate working on finding solutions to health care and the opiate addiction crisis, fighting abortion, and cutting the size of government.

Huffman was the primary sponsor on a bill to legalize medical marijuana in Ohio. The governor signed it into law in June 2016.

The primary for legislative races next year is in May.

The 5th Senate district includes most of the city of Dayton and western Montgomery County, all of Miami and Preble counties and part of Darke County. The district is considered a swing seat that, in the past, has been the focus of heated contests between the GOP and Democratic nominees.

No Democrats have announced a run for the seat yet.

Huffman lives in Tipp City with his wife and their five children.
