TODAY: ‘Stinky’ landfill hit with EPA fine topic of forum

Moraine residents and officials from several communities which have lodged odor complaints against a Dayton landfill under EPA orders to resolve the issue are invited to a forum on the matter.

Issues about the Stony Hollow Landfill’s odor emissions – which have drawn hundreds of complaints, a federal lawsuit and action from the city of Dayton – will be discussed tonight in Moraine, according to a letter from that city’s manager.

The Waste Management Inc.-owned landfill on South Gettysburg Avenue has been fined by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and is under agency orders to resolve the odor issues, which began drawing complaints in the spring of 2016.

“It’s like walking right into a wall – a wall of stink. And that’s putting it nice,” Rhonda Thaman, who lives close to the landfill has said.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 tonight at the Moraine Municipal Building, 4200 Dryden Road.
