TROY – A fire broke out at World Wide Junk Dealers and Recycling, located at 663 Union St. Troy, Tipp City and Casstown fire departments responded to the one-story, cinder-block structure shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26.
Owner Mike Hoagland said the 40,000 square-foot building was filled with "a ton of plastic." He estimated that 200 tons of plastic were stored in the building. Three semi-trailers, backed up to the building at a loading dock, and several piles of recyclable plastic outside the building were also destroyed. Part of the junkyard had once been an Ohio Department of Transportation garage. An old ODOT salt storage bin was also destroyed in the fire.
The fire was contained at 3:10 p.m.
The fire caused occasional explosions and huge plumes of black smoke that drifted north over Troy.
Hoagland said no hazardous materials were on the premises during the time of the fire. About 500 gallons of used motor had been pumped out of the building last week.
Chris Boehringer of the Troy Fire Department said no injuries were reported.
