Students win Dayton speech contest

Ve’Suan Smith from Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy won first place in the overall category of the 60th Dayton Public Schools Lucia May Wiant speech contest.

A’den Austin from Ruskin school was second, and Neveah Williams of Charity Adams Earley took third.

More than 20 students competed Wednesday at Wright Brothers School after winning their individual schools’ preliminary rounds.

Winners in the Original Literature category were Alexis Hardy from Valerie school, Liyah Kalebaba from Belle Haven and Veronica Pillion from Stivers. Philip Facey of World of Wonder, Jacyn Hoskins from Westwood and Nakylah Washington of E.J. Brown rounded out the Best Literature group.

Lucia May Wiant was in charge of the DPS elocutionary department in the late 1890s and established a public speaking fund to encourage young speakers.
