Three Dayton branch libraries to merge

The staff and patrons of the Dayton View, Ft. McKinley and Northtown-Shiloh Branch Libraries will soon join together under one brand new roof, according to a release.

The Northwest Branch of the Dayton Metro Library — centrally located among them — will replace the three small branches:

  • Northtown-Shiloh Branch, 35 Bennington Drive, will close permanently at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29.
  • Dayton View Branch, 1515 Salem Avenue, will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.
  • Ft. McKinley Branch, 3735 Salem Avenue, will offer public computer use only (no other library services) beginning on April 4 and will permanently close at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 9.

“The new Northwest Branch Library will more than replace the aging and inefficient facilities housing these three small branches,” Tim Kambitsch, Executive Director, said in a release. “It will provide improved and expanded services. This will be the largest Branch in our system, and it’s the first brand new facility to open in our Libraries for a Smarter Future project.”

Libraries for a Smarter Future is the Dayton Metro Library’s system-wide facilities upgrade, made possible by voter support of a bond issue in 2012.

The Northwest Branch Library, 2410 Philadelphia Drive, will open to the public April 23.

At approximately 30,000 square feet, it features:

  • Expanded public spaces
  • Dedicated areas for adults, children and teens
  • Dual-sided fireplace
  • More computers
  • Flexible meeting and community rooms
  • Audiovisual editing suite
  • Quiet Reading Room
  • A café operated by Third Perk Express
  • Original art installations
