Valley View school operating on backup power

UPDATE @ 3:45 p.m.: Students were able to return to classes and finish the day while the building operated on an emergency backup generator, according to Germantown Fire Chief Dan Alldred.

Alldred said the main power was shut off while a DP&L crew worked to make repairs and get the school building back to normal operations for Tuesday.

UPDATE @ 11:50 a.m.: Students were evacuated to the football field after smoke filled the school, according to Valley View Superintendent Richard Earley.

Earley said a transformer blew and caused a small fire.

Firefighters worked to ventilate the building.

No one was hurt.

FIRST REPORT: Fire crews are at Valley View Intermediate School after getting reports of smoke in the basement.

There were no reported injuries at the school on Comstock Street in Germantown.

Crews were called there shortly after 11 a.m. for a fire in the basement.

We have a crew en route and are working to learn more about what happened.
