West Carrollton officials are discussing allowing livestock in residential areas of the city.

The city is considering expanding guidelines that now permit farm animals in agriculturally zoned areas and some industrial districts, West Carrollton Planning Director Greg Gaines said.

City officials talked about the issue in a work session Tuesday night. Gaines said the city is aware of “a handful” of cases where residents have “urban livestock,” ducks and pot belly pigs among them.

Initially, West Carrollton will study other cities – including some local ones - that have passed similar measures and conduct an online survey of residents, Gaines said.

The process will likely take several months before city council formally considers changes, he said.
