“These four individuals are members of our community who have invested their time and energy into Dayton, and I am proud to announce my support of this entire slate,” Whaley said in a statement. “The future of our city depends on the quality of our schools, and I know that if we elect Mohamed, Paul, William, and Karen, then we will be able to work together to provide our students the opportunities they need to succeed.”
A news release says Dayton Chamber of Commerce President Phil Parker, Rev. Vanessa Ward and others will also support the four-person slate.
Dayton city government and Dayton Public Schools are separately governed entities that have sometimes overlapping efforts. Both were considering tax levies to fund preschool last year but did not communicate about those efforts, with the school district eventually withdrawing its levy plan. In her four years as mayor, Whaley has pushed education initiatives as a key to the city’s economic health.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election is Tuesday, Oct. 10.
