Buckeyes enjoying ‘golden era’ in football

Ohio State picked up six recruits in a dizzying five-day span recently, giving the team 23 verbal commitments in the 2009 class (seniors-to-be).

That’s a mind-boggling total when you consider it’s only June and players can’t sign letters-of-intent until the first Wednesday in February.

Texas is the only other national power keeping up with Ohio State, having gotten 19 commitments. Southern Cal has 13, Michigan 12, Notre Dame nine and Florida six.

The Buckeyes always have had a lot of clout in the recruiting realm, but they’ve never made it look this easy.

“Ohio State, in this part of the country, is really on top of the mountain right now,” said Bill Kurelic, recruiting analyst for Bucknuts.com. “Michigan is a little down. Notre Dame is down. If you’re a great player, it’s hard not to take a long look at Ohio State.”

Top recruits are jumping at offers from OSU because they know the class is filling up fast and they don’t want to get shut out. It’s gotten to the point where the Buckeyes might have to turn away premier prospects simply because they’ve run out of scholarships.

These are heady times for the football program. And with three national-title game appearances in the last six years and mega-talent Terrelle Pryor set to launch his career, OSU should be able to maintain its stature for the foreseeable future.

“This could go down as the golden era of Ohio State football,” Kurelic said.

Don’t put the cart before the horse, guys. They still play in the weakest of the BCS conferences and will get beat by the upper tier teams in the SEC and Pac 10. I see zero national championships in the near future.

Considering this current crop of players wasn’t even excpected to compete until this 2008 season, they over achieved (great coaching) in 2006 & 2007. Only three seniors lost last year so Soph’s & Jr’s were playing the eventual National Champions…. This year with two title appearances under their belts they are going to run for it all!

they are stacked, and more-so than ever. I was not predicting the success that they had last year at all, but they did extremely well. losing gholston will hurt us, but we are reloaded and ready to beat USC.

They sure look loaded. Just to get to the title game two years in a row is a major accomplishment, but everybody laughs at them because they lost both times. My question is WHERE WAS YOUR TEAM THE LAST TWO YEARS? Somebody commented the Big Ten is the weakest of the BCS Conferences. B.S. The ACC is a total joke - even traditional powers Miami and FSU are down. The Big Ten is on par with the Big 12 and PAC-10 and Big East. Everyone knows the SEC is, by far, the best.

The recruiting bonanza’s are a tribute to Tressel and staff’s hard work both on the recruiting trail but also in developing players. Tressel prays for his team, & not just to win games. As for the USC game, we had some weaknesses, both mental (strategic) and physical, exposed last year by LSU. Coach Carrol is no doubt working overtime on the Ill., LSU, and Wisconsin game films. We must plan on surprise packages to neutralize our better players. We’ve got our work cut out for us! But so do they.

Michael- “We must prepare”? “We’ve got out work cut out for us”? You play for tosu? What position? Face it, USC will trounce tosu and send them back to that center sucking city with their tail between their legs. With a nonconference schedule that looks similar to Miami U’s (shoot, at least Miami’s playing an SEC school), tosu won’t be prepared and will get skunked in LALA Land this September.
