Video: Watch David Letterman discuss his affairs and the blackmail attempt that followed

UPDATE (Friday, Oct. 2 at 1:45 p.m.) : CBS News producer Robert J. “Joe” Halderman has been indicted in an extortion plot against talk show host David Letterman, according to the Associated Press.

Halderman was arrested Thursday and indicted on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years upon conviction, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said Friday.

Warning: dirty deeds often lead to much dirtier deeds.

David Letterman on his show Thursday, Oct. 1, discussed affairs with his employees and a “terrifying” blackmail scheme.

Letterman, who married his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March, told his stunned audience that a man threatened to produce a screenplay and book based on “terrible, terrible things” that the talk show had done.

The man demanded $2 million. Instead of coughing up the cash, Letterman went to authorities.

A CBS News employee from the true-crime show “48 Hours” was arrested and has been suspended from the network.

CBS says the man was Joe Halderman, who has worked for the network more than 20 years.

In the video above, Letterman talks about the case and sexual relationships with his female employees.

“I have had sex with women who work on this show,” Letterman said. “Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would, especially for the women.”

now of all of the reports of people having sex in the media i think that dave did a wonderful job of taking care of this. rather than lieing he came out and admitted everything , it just goes to show how low some will sink to get an extra buck when you are in the spotlight. there is nothing wrong with sex and the fact that people will try to turn something into what it is not is the most discusting part of the whole thing. i have always been a dave fan and will continue to be a letterman watcher and i do hope that he doesnt lose his job because of someone elses greed. MORE POWER TO YOU DAVE , and i hope this all works out for you and you family and those that are involved. it has to be the cleanest sex scandle that i have ever seen in the news simply because of the honesty on your part dave , thank you for that and long live the king of late night !!!!!!

Letterman is a two-faced jerk. If he got laid it was because he’s rich.

This is great! Now the other comedians and talk show hosts can make fun of Dave as he has of soo many others. Kharma is a b!tch. Speaking to the honesty of Dave is very foolish. Obviously he was not real honest until he was forced to by this incident.

I thought that having sexual relations with a co-worker who is un der your authority is illegal and called sexual harassment. I bet Sarah Palin is laughing her butt off. If Dave loses his job it will not be because of someone elses greed but because he cannot control himself. Is not Dave married with a child. What a JERK !

Dave may have more money than most but he sure does not have more brains. What an idiot! Dave has made fun of so many others for this exact same behavior. Now it has come full circle and is biting at his rear end. I love it! What a lowlife! I think his wife and child must be so proud. Sex with an intern sounds like a page out of Clinton’s book. The only person dumber than Dave is the 48 hours producer who tried to extort him. I think this is the funniest thing I have ever seen Dave do. Gotta love show business. I wonder if Dave will be charged with sexual harassment ?

This is the funniest thing I have ever heard from Dave. What a dope this guy is, very dumb. Dave has made a living off of making fun of these types of people. Now the joke ison him !How dumb were these women to sleep with such a dork? Dave said that these women worked for him. This is sexual harassment and Dave should pay the price for his crimes.

I don’t see how they got past the gap in his teeth. Not handsome at all. They must be desparate. Trump’s comb over is better.

I wonder if Roman Polanski will come to Dave’s defense during his criminal trial for sexual harassment. He admitted on TV to having sex with women who worked under him. Nobody ever said Dave was bright. Sarah Palin is loving this one!

Oh, please. You can’t turn on a TV without seeing somebody who hasn’t done the same thing. No, that doesn’t make it right. Cheating isn’t right. My guess is that he’s now mortified - as well he should be - and hopefully has learned that he needs to be a better person for himself and his family. I don’t condone what he was doing, but in this day and age of lying and denying, I think he handled the situation extremely well by bringing it to light himself.

Davey did not bring this to light by choice. He had to do it as the Sh!+ was going to hit the fan really soon. And Oh yes I am sure he has learned his lesson and will be a better person. Jill, how dumb are you?

so, ‘hey jill’, how should davey have handled it, in your brilliant opinion? just let the tabloids run with it? obviously the guy is trying to keep his ship from totally sinking so he went on the offensive. would be nice if he was really sorry, but exactly how does that make jill dumb?

I guess his “World Wide Pants” were laying beside his office couch most of the time. I feel sorry for all the women who work there. Every one of them will be looked at with with the question of whether they were one of them that has been bedded.

Jill is dumb because she says that he has hopefully learned that he needs to be a better person for himself and his family. No kidding. Duh ! And he is now mortified because he got caught. Was he mortified while he was porking his co-workers ? I bet the women were. Thank you for calling me brilliant. Davey is the one responsible for sinking his ship. He treated the statement on the show like a comedy routine. Littleman is only sorry that he got caught

A pathetic old man who whores with his employees…and very few think it’s an issue. This country’s moral compass is so out of whack. Wonder what the poll results would be if it was your daughter and she had to do it to keep her job. Keep putting your heads in the sand America..it’s almost over.

Everyone knows it is GWB’s fault. Oh, I forgot, George’s marriage to Laura should serve as a good role model for both John Edwards and David Letterman. Letterman is a creep and a hypocrite. He has some nerve to make nasty remarks about Sarah Palin’s daughter. He has not been funny for a long long time.

Oh come on people!!! Get a grip!!! Dave is a comedian and its his job to make fun of other people. I think its smart of him to now make fun of himself. Yes he was wrong for what he did but it makes him no different then the millions of other men who do it.
