Triple scoop of ‘Bengal Bashing’

EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE:

PALMER RIPS OHIO STATE;

MIKE BROWN’S ETIQUETTE;

KING’S TAKE ON ‘SLIM 15’

ONE

I can’t stop laughing at Carson Palmer’s rip-job on Ohio State during his recent guest appearance on a radio show in Los Angeles.

Even funnier is Buckeyes fans’ negative reaction to it. Of course, Buckeye Nation is up in arms. OSU fans are almost as insufferable as Browns fans.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback loves his Southern California Trojans as much as Chris Perry loves his Michigan Wolverines and Tyler “Tank” Whaley loves his Ohio State Buckeyes.

All Palmer was doing was talking a little smack. When it comes to the Trojans, he’s biased, protective and extremely intense.

Ohio State faces Southern Cal in the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 13, in a nationally-televised game (8 p.m. Eastern) on ABC.

As LUDWIG AT LARGE likes to say, the game isn’t a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that!

“As far as I’m concerned,” one E-mailer wrote me, “Carson’s name is mud. Go Kimo!” (Kimo von Oelhoffen was the ex-Steeler who wrecked Palmer’s left knee in a January 2006 playoff game).

PALMER’S COMMENTS:

“I cannot stand the Buckeyes. It’s amazing to hear what those guys think about that university and what they think about that football program and (OSU coach Jim) Tressel and all the crap I gotta put up with being back there.

“I just can’t wait for two years from now when SC comes to the ‘Shoe and hopefully (the Bengals will) have a home game that weekend and I can go up there and watch us pound on them in their own turf. I’m really getting sick of it and I just can’t wait for this game to get here so they can come out to the Coliseum and experience LA and get an old-fashioned Pac-10 butt-whoopin’ and go back to the Big Ten.”

Check out Carson at:

TWO

Cincinnati’s WXIX-TV (FOX19) interviewed former Bengals linebacker Reggie Williams before his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Williams was stunned that Bengals president Mike Brown hadn’t congratulated him or reached out to him in the wake of Williams’ health problems.

Williams, Brown and Brown’s daughter — Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn — are all graduates of Dartmouth College.

“Mike, Katie and I attended the same etiquette classes at Dartmouth,” Williams said. “And they don’t get an ‘A’ in etiquette here!”

THREE

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King used former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry’s comments as one of his “Quotes of the Week.”

“Going back to the Bengals is possible. I wouldn’t mind it happening because I loved playing in Cincinnati. I got real close with all the guys out there and I planned on being out there for a long time. I really had a good time playing ball out there in Ohio.” — Suspended former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, on the prospect of returning to the team.

“If the Bengals do that,” King writes, “I will personally demand the entire front office be drug-tested.”

This is ridiculous! It’s a horrible time to have to continue to be a Bengals fan. Doesn’t Carson Palmer know that 80% or more of Bengals fans are Buckeye fans? And The Buckeyes have given Ohioans far more to cheer about than the Bengals have in almost 20 years (other than one season). First, The Bengals draft practically useless Michigan Products: Chris Perry and Leon Hall. Then we have to put up with Chad Johnson’s off-field antics all year long (and now we are just supposed to believe in him again?). We have one of the worst drafts in 2008 I have ever seen taking WR after WR… and now we have Chad back… so I guess those guys will really contribute this year – if we even sign them! Now we have Carson Palmer, the only rock amongst all this chaos that is the Bengals organization. The guy we hope one day we can “accidentally” surround with enough talent (because it doesn’t seem like it is going to happen “on purpose”) to win again. So our “Rock” goes to Cali and decides us Ohioan’s aren’t smart enough to pay attention to his rant that took place half way across the country? His comments were meant for Southern California’s? I hate to be the Ohioan to let Carson (and his USC education) in on the little secret called the media and the internet – but whatever he says will be played for a national audience and will be heard by people in Ohio. Why is it amazing to hear Ohioans have pride in Ohio State? As if somehow we are a lower class of people for rooting for The Ohio State Football Program and Jim Tressel. What Carson said went beyond just trash talking. It was insulting to “those people”? Just don’t read his comment – listen to them. He was absolutely talking down to Ohioans! This is where Carson works, where people buy his Jersey and T-Shirts… I’m sure that Southern Cali fans are buying up his shirts and lining his pockets with money the way Ohioans are! Well, Palmer, guess what we don’t have to buy your “crap”. Mike Brown should consider his self lucky if anyone shows up to support his under achieving Bengals and his star players who seem to get dim-witted in a hurry when they are sitting in front of a microphone. If Carson wants to align himself with Frostee Rucker – that’s fine! I’ll take Jim Tressel any day!

Lighten up Jason! He’s a fan SC. He went to college there. I wouldn’t expect anything less. Just because a pro team is in the same state as the great OSU we can’t expect the left wing progressives to see the light. Did he go too far? Hell no he’s a fan USC. That would be like a michigan fan giving quarter to OSU, it won’t happen. Carson is entitled to say what he wants in the realm of college football just so long as he stays true to the Bengals. Besides were gonna whoop USC a*s!!! so relax… it will be fun watching him eat crow when we win!

Hey, I’m all for Carson defending his school. Should Troy Smith say that he doesn’t like OSU because he plays in Baltimore? I hope he does, but he won’t, and why should Carson? I’ve been in Ohio my whole life and can’t stand OSU because their fans are obnoxious and close minded, basically the Steelers fans of the NCAA. Every year they play a cake schedule (Mich and one other good team is not a tough schedule) and then they make it to the Championships because they have a nice padded record. But they lose in the championship now don’t they? I have more respect for Carson now that he does show his support of his college. Why would you switch sides because you live in another state, HE PLAYED FOR USC! But OSU fans are close minded, so they won’t listen to reason.

I love the Bengals,Buckeyes, and Carson Palmer. I have to say this is the most pitiful way to react to a guy who is from Cali.,the quarterback for the best college team in Cali., and has passion that cannot be compared to anyone in football and you morons are bashing him over his love for USC. Give me a BREAK!! Would’nt you expect this from a former Buckeye if they were on another football team! All of you that are bashing Carson are MORONS and more!!

It’s one thing to talk about your own alma mater. That’s fine. But to use the word hate and to make negative comments about Tressel in there too is wrong. When you are in the public eye like Palmer, you have to watch what you say. Talking that way about the Buckeyes when you play in that state is like going to west dayton and dropping an N-Bomb.

Could Carson Palmer just be building the confidence of first-round pick Keith Rivers (LB) - also from USC? Could he know that his run defense needs some support? Palmer has proven he is a pro. He is all about the NFL and probably couldn’t care less about college ball.

I live in Pennsylvania, yet every Saturday during the fall I wear my scarlet and gray. On Sundays I wear my black and orange. This is just one of them cases where the media had nothing better to do than to create this situation. The biggest problem is that ESPN decided to air these comments right after showing Columbus as part of the Titletown U.S.A. segment(bad coincidence I think). Is it possible that there are some haters at that station? You knew they weren-t going to have anything like this after showing NYC or Boston. What a load of crap. As for Carson, well if I were in his position I might have done the same thing. It’s called team loyalty and we should all be as dedicated.

Hey Buckeye fan. He is from USC. What do you expect him to say? If he were from OSU, he would say the same against SC. Get over it. Buckeye fans are as bad as Browns. They need to learn there are more than 2 teams in the world. The last time OSU won they had to cheat (Clarett). No one can remember when the Browns won last.

First of all, I liked Patrick’s comment. That was good. So, I’m glad to see we’re all getting pumped for the upcoming season. I’ve been a Buckeye’s Fan for 40 years and have never been so embarrassed by Buckeye followers as in the past five years. Carson is so frustrated that he just had to let it all out. I’m not a USC fan but I love to watch them play. Sadly, unlike the Bucks, they normally back their mouths with their play. On another note, if the Bengals had traded 2 picks for Jason Taylor the NFL would have blocked it for sure. USC and the Bucks will be the game of the year. Can’t wait. I hope I only click “post” once.

Who cares what some bowl cut, washed up, Bengals QB thinks about the Buckeyes. Nobody affiliated with the Bengals has any validity on any subject other than losing. Ohio State will be just fine this year, on their way to their 3rd straight NC game appearance. As for Cincy, they will assume the usual positionof hold the Browns’ jocks, as they battle the Baltimore Ratbirds for the AFC North cellar, and Cleveland wins the division, and Super Bowl. Who let my DAWGS out..who…who…who…who!!

Palmer is an idiot. He never has been the brightest bulb in the pack. That’s why he can’t get the Bengals any further than he has. It’s okay to support your college team. In fact, I would be disappointed if he didn’t. The rub is in how he did it. He is the leader of a team that plays in Ohio. He should have used more diplomacy when he made his statements. I heard the interview. He said it with emotion. He meant it. I took his jersey out of my closest and threw it in the trash. I won’t buy another Bengals product as long as Palmer is in Cincinnati. The irony is, IF Palmer ever makes the Hall of Fame, it’s in Canton, OH - HOME OF THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES!!!

National Chamipionship, Heisman Trophy, #1 overall pick and a winning record as an NFL quarterback. Does this give him the right to say whatever he wants? No. But MikeO, it does not make him a loser. Hey I live in Ohio and despise the Buckeyes. You know what I take that back, he is the best football player in Ohio so he can say whatever the $%^* he wants!

You guys are missing the point. Carson could have built up USC all day. He could have talked about how USC is going to whip our butts. I have no problem with Carson building up his college and talking about beating Ohio State as harshly as he wants too. But he doesn’t have to tear down Ohio State fans, our coach and our program - when he himself is employed in Ohio. The Michigan arguement don’t apply - because we are bitter rivals. So I would expect lame players like Chris Perry to take shots at OSU directly. USC and OSU haven’t played in 30+ years. It makes no sense to me why he would want to go after Ohio State Fans in such a nasty way. Furthermore if OSU was playing a Baltimore College - I would expect Troy Smith to defend OSU and talk about beating that team… But I would not expect Troy Smith to take direct aim at the fans (that are probably also Ravens fans). Palmer’s comment’s wouold lead you to beleive that he can’t understand why we root for our home team. You really have to “listen” to the Carson Palmer interview - reading it doesn’t do it justice. Bottom line: if you are more of a Bengals fan you are defending Palmer, If you are more die hard Buckeyes you think he is an idiot.

Chad is teaching Carson how to get out of OHIO!!! And I wish I could push them the rest of the way out. Neither will be in the hallowed halls at Canton. And boxter i remember when the Browns were winners, and Art rip our hearts out by moving the team. At least we have an excuse, unlike 1 winning season in a decade and ½ in Reds town… The browns made the Playoffs 1 since being back in the league the same as the Bumbling Bengals. But wrong forum… Go Bucks!!!

Carson can go to hell - all he has done is prove once again that the Bengals run the NFL’s best work release program and are a bunch of losers, whiners and no class individuals - but thanks for giving me another reason to root against those Bengals and as far as your bashing us Ohioans, take a long look at your bank accounts - don’t forget who pays your family’s bills -OH IO love it or leave it! Trust me, you won’t be missed! Thin14

I’m all about Carson supporting his alma mater, he should by all means. But, he also has to remember where he is playing in the present day. He could’ve supported his Trojans and just kept it at that instead of bashing the Buckeyes. I think it bothers me the most that he bashed Jim Tressel. I mean, have a little class and realize what the man has done for OSU in general. Tressel is a great guy whom I have much respect for and right now, I have ZERO respect for Carson Palmer.

By Mitch

July 22, 2008 12:18 PM | Link to this

FYI: I do not believe Carson Palmer ever won a National Championship. As I remember he was an underachiever until Norm Chow was brought into USC in 03 where he led to the team to the Orange Bowl, not the National Championship. I think trash talk will make the game more interesting, with boths schools having some high profile alumni pass through their program. However, to personally attack citizens of Ohio, and coach Jim Tressel who is a class act all around, is not a way to gain praise in Ohio (atleast with OSU fans in Ohio).

By Cody

July 22, 2008 12:21 PM | Link to this

I’m going to cherish every moment of OSU getting manhandled my USC. And if they somehow manage to sneak in th national championship again, I’ll cherish seeing them dominated by 3 touchdowns again. OSU would get destroyed in any REAL conference. Big10 sucks and so does OSU. Go Carson. And all of you bashing him are morons.

What would Carson have to say after the Bengals played the Bucks? “How’d you like that 77-0 “butt-whippin” you little college boys?” Even a winless NFL team would whip the best college team. This is the kind of ridiculous thinking that drives non-OSU fans crazy and makes us root against you nutbags.

I don’t mind Palmer’s comment’s at all. He wasn’t being negative. He was talking good smack about two good progams USC and OSU. OSU fans can only dish it and not take it. At the end of the day his world is the NFL and what you do at OSU, U of M, Notre Dame, UT or and state school doesn’t matter ONE bit. Do players still hold their school close to them yes but soes it REALLT matter NOT A CHANCE. Think he cares if USC loosed all their games? Think he cares if OSU beats USC by 100 points honestly? No he’s a big-boy NFL PLAYER not a fan. He lives for his career as a NFL QB…people around here work at their non-million dollar a year jobs and HONESTLY care about a college football program WAY TOO MUCH!

OSU is terrible, Bengals are terrible, and I would be bitter too if i had to play here instead of somewhere warm. Also, OSU fans are ridiculous. Most of them couldn’t even tell you the coaches names but they are huge fans. Go ahead and play nobody every year so you can look like fools in the BCS bowls. Thats the worst part about it because another team gets screwed out of a BCS game because OSU played donkeys all season and gets rewarded for it.

Here is what Mike Brown had to say about Carson’s comments on bengals.com: As for Carson Palmer’s comments about Ohio State, Brown chuckled and recalled his father Paul coached two blowouts over USC as the Buckeyes coach in the early ’40s. “He knows where he can find me,” Brown said with a laugh. “I don’t think anyone takes it seriously. If they do, they shouldn’t. Just having fun.” End of discussion, now Buckeye’s fans please shut up.

Of course its great for him to support his school no matter what, but being a NFL star….people look up to him and a lot of his comments were uncalled for. He can say all he wants to his friends and others, but don’t do it in front of the media like that (or in other words, in front of a national audience). On a side note, his comments just prove that USC fans are equally as obnoxious as OSU fans with his comments about USC and the Pac-10. He has no room to speak

Carson is an idiot. Does he not know who his fan base is? Did he forget that he plays in Ohio and gets paid his salary in O-H-I-O? I have no problem with him rooting for his alma matter and would expect nothing else from him. The problem I have is with him bashing OSU fans and talking about how he “hates OSU fans” and is tired of all the people in Ohio. Well Carson, my advice to you is if you HATE all of us Ohio State fans who also happen to root for you every Sunday, than hop on your high horse and ride it right out of town. I knew there was a reason I did not like Carson Palmer and know I know what it is, he is an IDIOT. I will never root for the Bengals again. Done.

I apologize for my comments. In fact, I went back and watched the past two national championship games and realized that the Buckeyes got shafted. That is the only explanation for such a storied and great program to get pummeled like they did. I also regret my comments about Tressel. He obviously stands alone in the history of college football as a true god among men, a towering pillar. I mean look at the tough schedule the Buckeyes play. Kent State AND Youngstown state IN THE SAME YEAR???? How could anyone ever question the greatness of the Ohio State University. After reading the comments to this article I have decided to retire from football to devote my life to traveling around the world spreading the word of how great the Buckeyes are as a team and dispelling the rumor that their fans are a bunch of whiny homers who overreact to any criticism of the greatest football program in the history of the universe.

By Keli

I think what Carson Palmer said about the Buckeye’s was His opinion, however being from OH all my life I can say that I would rather watch OSU anyday over watching USC play. They cheat at every chance they get (Reggie Bush is well known for it). They would of never won the game over Notre Dame had Bush not cheated. Their coach Pete Carroll loves to whine and can’t take losing (which was fun watching last year). So Mr. Palmer you have a right to speak your mind however it’s the people of OH that YOU play for and You want them to support you now. Good Luck with that.

Just because you live in Ohio doesn’t mean you have to love the Buckeyes. Carson is one of the best things to ever happen to the Bengals. So the Bucks may go to the championship game again, just to lose again. In the championship they actually have to play a GOOD team, unlike most of the teams they play during the regular season. And the Browns? What a joke! Go Bengals, Carson, & UC!

After reading all the comments in this blog about what palmer said about the bucks just signifies what the nation has been saying for years. Buckeye fans are lunatics and brain washed into thinking the bucks will win every game every year and win a championship. Keep dreaming that until u toughin your schedule it aint gonna happen!

To John - no one is asking Carson Palmer to switch sides and defend the Buckeyes. Its just that he didnt need to be so rude in his comments about Tressel etc. USC gets the same coverage and comments in California.

Carson if free to speak what he wants, this is a free country. He can’t help that he is a moron, and doesn’t understand that he will get people pi$$ed off. But after all, Mike Brown condones this sort of behavior. Ahletes speak, then their agents help them out of it. The play on the field will speak for itself. Someday, people will realize that he is just another bengal quarterback that means nothing, and that it is just the same old jailgals.

I can’t believe you would say something so stupid. My daughter attends OSU. She now would be to ashame to were her Bengal jersey on campus. Most of the fans on campus are Brown fans but now Carson has settle the dispute there. I think any Bengal fan on campus would also be to ashame to wear the jersey. I guess there won’t be many Bengal fans on campus. Good job Carson!

Palmer should know that most buckeye fans are obnoxious hilljacks, so he probably shouldn’t have said anything. But, that’s how NFL guys are… get over it. They talk smack about each other’s schools and make bets when they are playing each other. You tools posting are just validating my point. I’m a Bengal fan but I don’t like going to games because you get stuck next to a annoying homer OSU/Bengal fan that can’t either doesn’t know the rules or can’t watch the game without being biased. Go Palmer!

I think that everyone is making a bigger deal out of this than necessary. Palmer went to USC and is entitled to his own opinion. People just need to relax, and realize that he was saying this in California, where most people are USC fans. And OSU fans need to get over it, their reaction is the reason I can’t stand Ohio State either.

I’ll tell all of you why this is importantl; because the people (“buckeye fans”) Palmer was ripping on are the same people who pay for his salary, buy his jerseys, and cheer him on every sunday. Him not liking OSU doesnt bother me, but talkin bad about “ohians” does. I was a fan of his, not anymore. And oh by the way, we all know California is the “gay” capital. Go Kimo!

Much ado about very little, who cares, I mean really, cares what a USC grad thinks of Ohio State? Palmer was probably not smart in popping off, but OSU fans get a life this is just not that important, period. Beat USC and OSU will have said plenty on the field, then remind Palmer of that.

Does anybody really care about what Palmer said? Very, very, very, very, little people care about those dumb Bengals outside of their 50 radius of Paul Brown Stadium (other wise known as the Litter Box). I am not a die hard Buckeye, but not a casual fan either. But face facts Buckeye fans. They won a National Championship on a yellow flag, and have been humilated the past two seasons in the Championship game. Untill The Bucks Kick the crap out of someone in the “big game”, then fans can beat their chest. Until then Palmer can sling mud and the Buckeyes will have their face rubbed in the mud. Cold, but true.

Wow, you crybaby OSU fans are just proving him right. Face it, your conference is a joke, your schedule is almost annually a joke, and you only get recognition because… well no one really knows why other than maybe the media doesn’t want to upset your fanbase and then have to listen to you whine and cry. Your program is a joke, you’re the Buffalo Bills of college sports, OSU. Let the real conferences (PAC-10, SEC, etc.) play, and you go back to your sandbox and beat on the rest of the weaklings in the Big 11 and Youngstown St..
