Who’s next in the No. 5 spot?
For those with their shorts snagged over my comparison of Homer Bailey to Eric Milton, the comparison was merely the propensity that both have for giving up home runs. Nothing more.
I wasn’t saying that Bailey’s career will follow the path of Milton’s. Some of you are correct - Bailey is only 22. But soon he’ll be 24, then he’ll be 26. Then what? Time is running out for him to come up with a major-league curveball and change-up.
A lot of you should listen to Mr. Redlegs (Original) when he posts. He ALWAYS makes sense and is always one who reads the post closely and doesn’t jump off the deep end.
Homer’s Odyssey with the Cincinnati Reds is a strange one and so far it is something close to a Greek Tragedy — although Homer Bailey is a Texas cowboy, not a Greek philosopher.
Bailey should not be with the Reds right now — manager Dusty Baker knows it, the Reds front office knows it, perhaps even Bailey knows it.
He was an emergency plug-in, a guy with a 4-4 record at Class AAA Louisville, an ERA near four and he hadn’t won a game for the Bats since April 30.
But the No. 5 spot in the Reds rotation is a black hole — Matt Belisle didn’t work out and Josh Fogg didn’t work out.
Bailey was the reluctant choice, a grasp at catching a miracle in a mayonnaise jar — but mostly because the choices are few.
Fans scream about the Reds selling Justin Lehr and Tom Shearn to Korean professional teams, but the Reds had zero choice. Both had it written into their contracts that if a Japanese or Korean team offered them contracts the Reds had to let them go.
They both went.
Bailey is 0-3 with an 8.76 ERA for his three starts in Cincinnati. He has given up six homers in 12 1/3 innings and was publicly hanged Sunday by the Boston Red Sox, three homers in 2 1/3 innings.
Why did it happen? For the same reason the Reds didn’t really want to bring him back in the first place — he needs more time to work on his curveball and his change-up.
Even Baker said, before Bailey arrived in Cincinnati, “We would have like for him to spend more time down there, but we’re in an emergency status.”
Some fans suggest putting Jeremy Affeldt into the rotation. He was a starter in Kansas City early in his career and came to the Reds camp this spring promised a tryout in the rotation.
That didn’t work and he was put in the bullpen. It would take time for him to stretch out his arm now so he could pitch more than two or three innings, so plopping him immediately into the rotation is not an option.
Andy Pettyjohn is 7-2 at Louisville and Matt Maloney is 6-3, but both have high ERA’s — 4.84 and 4.92 and that’s in Triple-A.
The best option probably is 22-year-old Daryl Thompson, the same age as Bailey with a lot less experience.
Bailey’s turn pops up this weekend in Yankee Stadium. That’s probably not going to happen. Running him out there for more abuse would wreck what little confidence he has left.
Some suggest the Reds should do to Bailey what the Texas Rangers did to Edinson Volquez in 2007 and what the Toronto Blue Jays did to Roy Halladay in 2001 — send him back to Class A for shock therapy.
Maybe starting over would work, maybe not. What he definitely needs is to come up with a major-league curveball and a major-league change-up or he may vanish into the mist where so many high draft picks disappear.
For now, though, do the Reds want to throw another youngster into the lion’s den, this den being Yankee Stadium?
Thompson faced the Yankees during spring training at Legends Field, packed with 11,000, and struck out the side. Later in the spring he faced them again and went 1-2-3 — the only two innings he pitched for the Reds last spring.
Hey, it’s only Yankee Stadium and maybe Thompson can have the same attitude third baseman Gene Freese espoused in 1961: “To hell with the Yankees, to hell with New York and to hell with Babe Ruth.”
And now I’m going to enjoy the rest of the day off - a respite from the harangues about Dusty Baker and Ken Griffey Jr. and lineups and batting orders. My wife is cooking some ribs on the grill and I can smell them now.
Or is that odor emanating from Cincinnati?

Hall of Fame baseball writer Hal McCoy is in his 36th year of covering the Cincinnati Reds, the longest tenure for any active writer covering one team. Counting spring training and postseason games, McCoy has covered more than 7,000 major-league baseball games, written close to 18,000 baseball stories and eaten enough hot dogs to give Babe Ruth indigestion.

Maybe the focus can switch from Homer to this anemic offense. We have beat the Patterson issue to a pulp. Even radio and TV were blasting Baker tonight on the Patterson issue. Junior looks terrible. He and Dusty need to have a talk about what is in the best interest of the team. Hopefully Keppinger is back in a week or so to get the Cabrerra/Janish out of the line-up.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

How would anyone be upset by your comparison of Homer to Eric Milton? If Homer were to have a career that even paralleled Milton’s even Homer’s biggest supported would have to be extatic. Milton won 87 games and threw a no-hitter, Homer will be lucky to win 20 games. A 91 mph heater with no ability to locate and periphery stuff that resembles a jv pitcher prob won’t get the job done.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

Well Bristol, you crusty, wrinkly ol’ buzzard, this is my 13th comment on this thread and nine of them have been in direct relation to the subject or response to the subject from someone else. So either you’re reading-impaired or select-minded or, more likely, comprehension-challenged, but on a splendid evening why are you some poor moe with nothing better to do than worry about what posters are doing, or not doing, in the badlands of a baseball blog? May we all come to your house and needle you with a red-hot poker for a few hours? That’s what you’re doing in Hal’s House of Redsville. After all the fun and giggles at your place, we can all pile into the truck with our dogs and guns and go to Burger Doodle and eat in the parking lot to revel in the great time.By Mutaman

I don’t get it. Last year Homer dominated AAA the first 1/2 of the year and was decent, if inconsistent, during his stint with the Reds. Then, earlier this year, Chad Moeller said: “I caught him some last year and that’s the best I’ve seen him,” Moeller said. “Command, velocity, his fastball was kind of cutting across the strike zone. That was a different pitcher than I saw last year.” David Ross said the same thing when he rehabbed at Louisville. Now, a few weeks later, despite pitching decently in his first start in Philadelphia, Homer can’t get anybody outand is suddenly chopped liver? All of a sudden a kid who had all the potential in the world has lost his fastball and has no other pitches. I’m confused? What happened?By Dave Bristol

ATTN: Mr. Redlegs Original. Just reading along here and very much enjoying the comments and then notice a disturbing pattern…You WAY MORE than anyone else on this blog consistently commenting on the comments of others versus the topic. Do you even know what the topic is? Seems that is your highest calling. It’s hilarious how YOU, of all people, disparage another for doing what you in your most high and mighty Troll Chair are the most guilty. You seem awfully insecure in your need to be both big shot AND hypocrite. :) Maybe time to change your name to Mr. Know-It-All.By Y-City Jim

You are correct, next time I will use my hillbilly dictionary. Point being folks Hal McCoy is a really, really strong baseball man. I have lived in a lot of big cities and they would be lucky to have a guy like this working on the local rag. Do not take him for granted, once he retires I for one will sorely miss the man and his opinions. The internet has made everyone an expert but again this man is a Baseball Hall of Famer, he is the best of the best. He may not always be right, use perfect grammer, etc. etc. but overall I say it again, the guy is a stud writer.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

He is a MLB Hall of Famer, if you are not a MLB HOFer then you have ZERO cred so quit commenting (in other words shut the $%^& up). The man is a stud writer and we are very lucky to have him in Dayton, period end of story. If you have nothing good to say just go back to your trailor park and turn on wrasling.By John

Mr. Redlegs: The Arroyo trade would be a salary dump. The Reds owe Bronson $25 million in 2009/2010. The Yankees may be the only team who could afford him. I agree if he is traded the Reds would need to find another starter. They are tough to find as the Reds know all to well.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

Mike, EXACTLY my thoughts when the Yanks lost Wang. But one enormous problem: The Reds can’t find a No. 5 starter, how the hell are they to replace Arroyo unless they get a near-ready pitcher in return?By Mike-Cinci
June 17, 2008 2:15 PM | Link to this
At this point Thompson is the Reds last hope for a #5 starter. If he flunks because he was rushed or he is not quite good enough the fans will be left calling for Burton to be a starter. It is quite possible the Reds will need a #3 and #4 starter too. Harang and Volquez look solid at #1 & #2. Arroyo and Cueto are iffy but I’m counting on Cueto to be very good in time. The Yankees need a pitcher. Could Arroyo be on his way to the Bronx?By donb51

“Now, you’re screaming for Thompson, who’s just a few months removed from A-ball.” So now it’s the fans’ fault - how convenient. Hey, we’re f-a-n-s. We only see what we get to see. We don’t know all the details. That’s the owners’ job!. Blaming us fans on bringing someone up who is not ready is like a parent giving the two-year old something he wants because he throws a tantrum. As fans, we get the privilege and right to suggest, dream, moan, complain, whatever. As OWNERs, it’s your job to make good decisions. Making a bad decision because the fans want something is not an excuse. So don’t make it one.By Calvin S.

I believe that Bailey should be sent down to A and told to throw only off speed and curve balls. If he is too hard headed to learn then maybe a change in scenery is in order for Mr. Bailey. He doesn’t belong in the majors and sending to bullpen does nothing to help him or more importantly the team. Someone has to be in the number 5 spot and contray to what Bob C. said on Sunday this team is not going to be in contention this season, so why not another rookie? I don’t like to judge a pitcher on era’s. In this day and age where pitchers only go 6 or 7 ininngs a couple of starts where you go say 6 ininngs and give up 5 runs and your era goes way up. I believe by his comments Baker has already named the next number 5 starter, look for one Daryl Thompson to be call up soon. IMO.By Calvin S.

Hij, almost every GM and manager would love a return to the 4-man because there’s clearly not enough pitching talent (plus it would be cheaper). But today’s pitcher has been raised on 4 days’ of rest from the time he was in high school or college, even in the minors when organizations really want to see more of their pitchers throw. However, there’s another factor, a huge factor, one that is bigger than the public actually realizes: the player’s agent. You can’t imagine the number of calls the GM gets from agents complaining about the use or misuse of their client, the pitcher. The 4-man will ruin my client, the agent will yell. Cause him injury, shorten his career, reduce is earning power, he’ll plead. And since the agent makes 5 percent of his client’s earnings, he’s going to protect his investment—loudly, clearly, emphatically. If you are an organization that advocates the 4-man rotation, you can flat out forget adding free agents or keeping traded players who can opt out.By mr. Redlegs (Original)

Wild Bill, a pitcher’s mechanics are as fragile as Brandon Phillips’s ego. They can constantly evolve, shift and move, especially on youngsters. It can happen from batter to batter to game to game to season to season. I’ve known of pitchers to come off the mound between switching sides, go straight to the video room, look at a previous inning of that game where they felt more comfortable, go back to the mound. So the fact Bailey has so much work to do isn’t a surprise. He’s got a lot of holes for the surviving in the majors. But again, he’s still a babe.By hij

The biggest subliminal cop-out is to blame something on the “media,” which is really outlandish when a member of the media acts in the third person in an interview as if he is not media. The media doesn’t pitch, hit or perform. When Bailey was called up last year, the fans and sportstalk dopes were screaming bloody hell for him. They were screaming the year before when he was dominating in Class A and AA. You did the same thing with Bruce. Now, you’re screaming for Thompson, who’s just a few months removed from A-ball. The Reds’ development staffs from the O’Brien to Krivsky regimes said Bailey wasn’t ready, but you didn’t listen. You screamed. “Get him up here! Now!” But not all players, especially pitchers, have the same skill sets as they parallel the levels of the minors, and not all of them have the repertoire to get MLB hitters out on a consistent basis. There’s no comparison of Bailey to Cueto to Thompson. Three distinctly different styles of pitchers—in pitches, velocity, development, maturity and even mox. The reason Bailey should be shipped out is because he’s got one pitch—fastball—and that’s it. Nothing else to get hitters out. He’s kerosene. On one hand you want the Reds to win games; on the other you want the big-league team to be a training ground for someone who ain’t got the irrevocable right stuff at this time. Can’t have it both ways, especially in the clubhouse. A player like Bailey needs to be put into a position where he can succeed and grow, and with his stuff that’s not the big leagues at this point.By wild bill

I have seen this mentioned a few times, and I do not understand. Why do people belive/think that the media attempts to make certain players stars. Players have to make themselves stars, not the media. Certainly, it makes a great article to talk about the next up and coming player, but media does not bat or pitch. If someone, like Homer, wants to be a star, he has to do it himself.By Cait

I’m for giving Fogg a few more starts. Even Belisle. But Fogg has experience and can keep the team in a game. Better to give up 5 runs in 5-6 innings than 5 in 2+ innings like Bailey is doing. It’s the #5 SP - I’m more concerned about Arroyo, frankly. I wouldn’t rush Thompson. My more immediate concern is Sunday - I’ll be at Yankee Stadium and if I have it figured right, we should see Cueto. He’s been shaky but he looks determined and fiery. Interesting article. It is true that Bailey is completely overwhelmed right now in the Majors. So the choice is to either let him keep under going trial by fire or send him back down for more seasoning. I think the only thing for sure is that it is too soon to give up on him. Also, I’m not sure Thompson would fare any better than Homer, who should change his name to K, so we will probably see Fogg back out there. It is not the manager or the coaches that is the problem with the Reds. It is the lack of good players. Leo Mazzoni was great in Atlanta and fired in Baltimore. The differnce-Atlanta had better pitchers. Sweet Lou is a genius in Chicago but had a terrible record at Tampa Bay. With Lou gone Tampa Bay is better. Why? They have better players now. Can you name the Rays manager? Joe Torre has a losing record with the Dodgers. He misses the Yankee payroll. Terry Francona is a swami in Boston but was fired in Philadelphia. Jim Leyland is a respected manager but his $130 million dollar Tigers are awful. He is not the problem. His players are failing him. Good players make a manager look smart. Bad players make a manager look clueless. It has always been that way.By Y-City Jim

Number 3 seems a bigger deal. There are many criteria that make up a good 3 hole hitter. Griffey does not nor has not had one statistic that would evidence that. Dusty continues to honor the memory of times long gone and losing continues on and on. Drop him down to 6th or 7th or sit him awhile and you might find a more willing camper to void the no-trade clause.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

Look around at MLB pitching coaches. See any 200-game winners? See any All-Stars? Any of them former catchers? The criteria is not on-field success, the criteria is acumen, mechanics, pitch selection, preparation, program and psychology. Look at the now-unemployed Rick Peterson of the Mets (and formerly A’s) and Rick Kranitz of the Orioles. Two of the very best. Ever hear of them as players? Mike Maddox of the Brewers. Journeyman reliever. It’s all about their programs and mentoring, and that’s one thing we can always question about the Reds because of constant front office and managerial turnover. Do they actually have a pitching system that is carried from the big-league pitching coach down to the instructional leagues? If not, and I doubt it, there’s the genesis of so many issues.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

Hey Exactly, you’re probably dead-red on your roster moves and tend to agree with you on Fogg. He’s a guy who scares you to death but when he pitches with regularity tends to get into grooves, like he did the last six weeks of 2007, when he almost carried the Rockies on his back in big-game matchups against opponents’ No. 1 and 2 starters. He seems the most logical (or default) choice for this upcoming start. As for whomever mentioned Herrera starting, he’s one of those guys who’s stuff the offense really shouldn’t see a second time around. He’s a “novelty” pitcher and what makes him effective is that one quick look at his funky bulldog stuff.By jeffl

My tendency would be to go with Fogg, even though I’ll be at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and would love to see Thompson. But Fogg’s career #’s just tell you he’ll put a string together, and we oughta give that a chance while Thompson develops and Homer gets his head out of his butt. Other changes—soon Patterson goes back to L’ville in favor of Norris… Kepp back with the club, Janish heads south… why hasn’t Herrera ever started, given he’s a deception guy with several different pitches?… I can’t believe Jocketty won’t sell off some assets; he’d be a fool not to… could Willie Randolph land in the Queen City?… I saw Votta play LF last year and thought he looked pretty good. Strong arm, runs well. He lacks defensive “feel,” which shows up with bad footwork and weird throws at 1b, and would mean bad routes and some midjudging in LF, but Yonder at 1b and Joey in LF is cool by me.By Mark

After reading Dick Pole’s lifetime ERA of 5.05 for 6 years of MLB, it explains a lot about the pitching we see in Cincinnati. Fire him, hire Soto. Fire Dusty, hire Oester. Release Patterson. Move Griffey to #6 spot, bat Bruce 3rd and Votto 4th. What’s it take to see the light ?By boxter

Just who in the hell is he to make or give pointers on or to Homer Bailey or anyone else for that matter? He’s was a sub-par pitcher turned mediocre (at best) broadcaster. Criminy! I know, I know….. Let’s just make Dick Pole the new manager, Dusty the GM, get Narron back as our “baseball guy” strategist, make Trey Griffey our new leadoff hitter & while we’re at it, move Corey Patterson to the #3 hitter in this lineup???By Mike

I keep seeing comments about Chris Welsh said this and that about Homer’s mechanics. Its clear who the pitching coach should be. Easy solution for a 5th starter is trade Griffey and Freel to Tampa Bay for Andy Sonnanstine. Trade Dunn, Bailey, David Ross, and Alex Gonzales to Seattle for Eric Bedard.By Jim M.

The Reds need to ship Bailey back to AA. because he does not look like the same pitcher that came up last year. He has zero zip on his fastball and he doesn’t use his head when pitching into the count. also Thompson needs to be up here.. lets see what he can do..he has done well every stop of the way.. and i want dusty to get Soto in as pitching coach and get Berry off 3rd base coaching duties and also get a legit batting coach that knows what it takes to hit .300 this team at times has patience at the plate and other times act like they have to swing at the first picth to get to a dinner date!! AND for the life of me why Patterson is on this team is beyond me.. cant the hitting coach see every time he swings he uppercuts and pops the pitches up?? he never swings level!! its simple things like this that make me wonder why they have a hitting coach or a pitching coach.. Cueto’s first game of the season.. his mechanics were fluid to the plate.. now he is falling off the left side of the mound towards 1stbase.. Soto can see this but Dick Pole cant?? Get SOTO on the coaching staff asap.. and if Dusty hates losing? put the right coaches in place and quit hitting Patterson lead off and release him!because everytime i see Patterson in the lineup to make automatic outs,, thats one less batter the other team has to worry about!!By T-man

The Reds should send Bailey back to the minors, it is obvious he is not up to the task at the MLB level. Hal is not the only writer to note Bailey’s “attitude” problems, many of the Cincinnati writers have noted this as well. I think Thompson would be better than the guys that are currently on the MLB roster. I like to see a K/BB ratio of at least 2:1, which none of the current fifth spot contenders possess. So far this season Thompson has a better than 4:1 ratio. I say give him a tryout against the Yankees, and see what happens. Maybe he’ll be more grateful for the opportunity than Bailey and work hard to stay. I was also really impressed with Leo Mazzone when he called the game a couple weeks ago on FOX, his knowledge and understanding of the art of pitching is breathtaking. I would love to see him in Cincinnati. I think Dusty Baker suffers the same fate Pete Rose did in that he is not very good at handling pitchers, he would benefit, as would the team from Mazzone’s presence in the dugout.By rob

How about Mario Soto as a potential pitching coach? Sure, Ted Power has a lot of credibility but Soto has had a positive impact on Cueto and Volquez. I was listening to the Reds opponents TV announcers a couple of games back when Edinson Volquez was pitching. It may have been against the Phillies but they were talking about the Texas Rangers gave Volquez a list of things to work on and sent him all the way back to class A ball to do it. They did this about 4 times during the 2007 season and then they traded him to the Reds for Josh Hamilton during the off season. When I heard this story my thoughts were that the Reds gave up a 5 star ball player for a class A, minor league player with a shopping list. I still watch the Rangers play sometimes just to see Hamilton play. He is such a smart, talented player. He makes the pitcher work and throw strikes and has the confidence to go deep in the count unlike some of the Reds who can’t wait to get it over with as quickly as possible. I wish we would never have made that trade. We sure could use those 80 RBI’s he has right now.By rusty

I wonder how much of this coaching staff Baker will change. His idea of keeping some continuity after so many managerial changes the past few years was sound, but I do agree there’s need for a better pitching coach. Thing is, Baker’s not going to fire Dick Pole. I can see where Mark Berry might get canned, Chris Speier moves to third base coach and Pole becomes the bench coach, opening the door for a new pitching coach. To me, it’s Ted Power, but I’ve also heard he’s too valuable at Louisville with the prospects. Seems ridiculous but also understandable. Who among us have been bypassed for a deserved promotion because we were too good at our current job? I also agree with Chris Welsh’s idea that Votto needs special 1b defensive coaching. Don Mattingly isn’t far away, in Evansville, Ind., and once his personal issues are solved, might he be interested in the hitting coach position next year? Don Baylor is out there. Great hitting instructor. If Dunn goes, so might hitting coach Brook Jacoby, who was brought in specifically to get Dunn out of his funk.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

I love Hal’s blog. He did not say the Reds should start Thompson in Yankee stadium he just mentioned it could happen. I don’t think it is the best idea for the young man. Normally top prospects are brought up to pitch/play their first game at home. He said the Reds could send Homer to Class A ball but he did not say they should (must) do it. Hal does mention possibilities for different players but rarely does he say this must be done. Hal is a smart man. Like good GM’s he has room to move. Who is really better than Bailey…Fogg, Belisle, Affeldt, Malony, Thompson? We need to see them pitch in MLB to find out. The Reds are a bad team. Patience is needed. Give Bailey the chance and then we can move to the next guy.By Gerry

If Dick Pole is an effective pitching coach, and I believe there must have been a time when he was, then Bailey can have his flaws corrected in the Cincinnati bullpen. He would also have the assistance of the bullpen coach Juan Lopez. Other things Welsh mentioned was the length of Homer’s stride and that combined with the arm angle issue causes him to be throwing uphill. That would certainly account for the loss in velocity. Also has the no-wind-up delivery really sped up his approach to the plate? If not, then let the kid go back to the full wind-up and feel more comfortable. Lastly, if the kid really does have an “attitude” problem then try a little psychology. Maybe a little time with a veteran might do him wonders. Is Crash Davis around? :D BTW, jsc - Amen! Welsh said something useful yesterday. He said Bailey needs to drop his arm angle a little to throw a two-seamer to get some movement instead of a four-seamer since his velocity is down in the low 90’s. A straight low 90’s fastball is a cookie to a big leaguer. If he’s willing to change, maybe he should get sent to down to A-ball to learn the to throw a two-seam fastball and become more efficient with his secondary pitches. P.S. Hal,I havejust an insignificant little criticism but I think you should use ‘proclivity’ instead of ‘propensity’ in a negative context.
