Cueto puts the zeros to the Red Sox

A great spring training story:

The Colorado Rockies, managed by Clint Hurdle, were tied with Texas, 4-4, in the ninth inning the other day. The Rangers put two on with two outs and a regular player was at-bat.

Hurdle walked over to his bench coach, former Pittsburgh/LA manager Jim Tracy, and said, “We better be careful with this hitter. I see they have a No. 83 on deck.”

So they walked the regular hitter, filling the bases. No. 83 hit a grand slam home run. And who was No. 83? It was Chad Tracy, the son of Jim Tracy, who didn’t tell Hurdle that No. 83 on the other team is his son.

JOHNNY CUETO was Mr. Unhittable today against the Boston Red Sox, giving up no runs, two hits, no walks and striking out five in six innings. He faced the minimum of 18 batters because both guys who singled were wiped out on double plays.

The Reds took a 1-0 lead into the ninth and had 29 straight scoreless innings after a 6-0 win Sunday agaisnt the Pirates and a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays on Monday. But lefthander Bill Bray gave up two runs in the ninth and the Reds lost, 2-1.

Bray was dealing four pitches for strikes - fastball, change-up slider sinker. The best thing was that he needed only 69 pitches to cover the six innings - pitching efficiency he seldom displays. And it came against the Red Sox lineup that was of Opening Day quality.

Catcher Ramon Hernandez talked as if Cueto could do better.

“He was pretty good,” said Hernandez. Pretty good? “He was having good control so he was ahead of the hitter almost every time. When he is ahead of the hitter he can make him chase more pitches. The key for him is pitching ahead.

“He was throwing and locating all his pitches on any count,” Hernandez added. “Today was one of those great days where everything he was going to throw was going to be a strike. Hopefully he can keep that consistency (69 pitches, 48 strikes).”

BILL BRAY probably had his last hurrah. Sent into the game in the ninth to protect Cueto’s 1-0 lead, he walked the first hitter and gave up a two-run double for the 2-1 loss. In his 4 2/3 innings of this injury-plagued spring, Bray has given up eight runs (three earned), eight hits and five walks.

Meanwhile his spot as a lefthanded long man could go to a short man 5-foot-5 Daniel Ray Herrera who has appeared six times and given up no runs and one hit. (See the Dayton Daily News web site later tonight or tomorrow for a full story on the diminutive Herrera.

Dickerson is the left fielder. Mr. Redlegs{original}and Y-city Jim predicted he would be no where in sight when this season started. They were in error. He will be better defensively than Hairston in left. He has better speed, and covers more ground, and has a better arm. He’s a better athlete. Hitting remains to be seen.

KR, your suggestion about Edmounds is very good, he would certainly fit the outfield and lefty part. Nice thought.

KR, Wayne signed Corey not Walt J. He was instructed to do so by Bob C on the reccommendation of Dusty. Wayne is gone. He was a 1st time GM who’s bad contracts led to his demise but I can’t blame patterson on him that was Dusty. Dusty will not have that kind of clout with Walt J a much more experienced GM with a track record for winnig and a relationship with the owner. Walt is Bob’s guy. If you also look at the Patterson signing he had a very good spring and started off the season with a very good 2 weeks actually winning a couple of games for the reds in the early going. He then went into a slump he never came out of. Injuries and 2 very bad fielding outfielders Dunn and a aging Griffey dictated someone who could go get it in CF. When it became obivious that he was not the answer he was optioned. Injuries and Dickerson hitting 220 led to his recall shortly afterward. Its a shame that Jones couldn’t regain his form of a couple of years ago because he is a lefty and he can play the outfield but its apparent he can’t do the job. A trade will have to be make or the reds will be short a lefthanded hitting outfielder on the bench.

Jim T, you’re probably right about Bray; every team is after left handers and they all think their reclaimation programs can raise the dead. But how about a free agent? The last I checked Jim Edmonds is still out there, and I’m sure WaltJ is aware of it. I know he’s 38 and commands a hefty price but his agent surely understands the economy. So WaltJ is solely responsible for signings with no input from the manager? You mean WaltJ offered Patterson an inflated contract last year, when there were no other offers, without prodding from DustyB. I’d like to think WaltJ has better sense than that.

Wasn’t it just last year, that all we had were lefty’s off the bench—and what we wanted was some right-handed power?

KR, a left hander with Bray,s stuff should beable to get you a lefthanded bat off the bench. I don’t like giving up on Masset but he is out of options and if they carry Bailey he is gone. i would start Bailey at AAA. As for Jones Walt J signed him not Dusty and it will be Walt j who cuts him. All this talk about Dusty making the roster decision is BS.He may have had that type of influence over Wayne but he won’t with Walt J.The problem is who is your lety off the bench?

By KR

Jim T. Don’t think I’d give up on Masset yet, and I don’t have a good reason why, but I think theres something there. They say Bray has good stuff, but he’s always hurt. Don’t know if he has enough value to trade for sombody that could come to the bigs; maybe prospects but that won’t help. Everybody has utility players, they’re interchangable. Jjones ain’t the answer to anything other than being Bakers bobo.

KR, we have a left handed relief pitcher Bray and a couple of utility players and Masset. My thught is we still need a left handed hitter off the bench. don’t know if thats enough to get it done or not. If your asking your self why Jjones is still here thats the reason.

Red’s fans should adopt as their theme song, Imagine by John Lennon: “You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…” There’s a lot riding on Harang and Arroyo and Coco and Weathers and Wily T and EE and Gonzo’s knee & dear old Toothpick… enough to scare some of us.

The Reds will go as far as their pitching takes them. They will be average or worse on offense. With decent pitching they could be a 500 ball club. If the pitching falters they will be fighting the Pirates and Astros for the basement. I hope Harang is not hurt and Codero still has something in the tank.

I feel so sorry for the Brewers. Just read on ESPN that Ken Macha might have to close out games in April using Mitch Stetter, Todd Coffey and Seth McClung. Imagine having that big oaf Todd Coffey back on the Reds? The stuff nightmares are made of!

Alot of dissension on the blog today Hal. It’s good to see the Reds are drawing interest, even if it’s negative. Fact is I look for them to be better this year; but not much. The pitching is still suspect, and the position player mix just isn’t there yet. Hey Jim T, what of value do we have to trade that we can afford to let go?

Hal, with Masset out of options and Dusty and Walt both suggesting that Homer could stick as a relief pitcher is it possible a trade is in the works? It seems the reds have a few options pertaining to a left handed relief specialist coupled with Masset and Kepp. I mention this because Gammons and Oleny are both suggesting the reds are chatting with teams. Where there is smoke there usually is fire.Gammons mentioned Harrang but Walt quickly shot that down. Are You hearing anything?

29 innings without a run scored…this could be one of the most boring team the Reds have ever put on the field…I hope Gomes plays left. An outfield of Dickerson, Tavaras, and Bruce has got to be one of the worst in baseball

Bray has been inconsistent at best since coming to the Reds. He’s shown some flashes of brilliance, but that’s about it. I would think he’s on a short leash. As for Ryan…. nice to see your continued optimism. But you need to come down to reality — Cueto’s not even close to being the best on this staff — he’s a LLLOOONNNGGG way from it! Nor is this staff even close to awesome — they’re mediocre at best. Reality check, dude!

Eddie, Please don’t let Ryan ruin the reputation of all those from Indiana. There are plenty of Reds fans in the Hoosier State.

Herrera is fun to watch. He has at least 4 pitches maybe 6. He is far from being a fireballer but he can throw the off speed stuff. I hope he makes it. Bray has been very disappointing. He has talent but so far in key situations he has not measured up. Baseball is a tough game. No scout 5 years ago would say Herrera would be a MLB player ahead of Bray. Who knows things may work out differently and Bray could become very successful. I hope he does. By the way Herrera has not made the team yet. It’s not over until it’s over.

Eddie, for a new guy on here you’re just plain mean! Are you the son of Jim T? Leave Ryan and jaker alone, guys…they are valued posters, as is eveyone here. Unless you own the blog and disagree. I imagine Hal loves the varied opinions and spirited debate. Most of us do, that’s why we participate.

Hello Herrera, goodbye Bray. You’ve had your chance. Per Eddie’s retort to Ryan K: You had me in stitches. That’s some funny stuff dude. Per Reds: go get ‘um Dusty.

well ryan you have been wrong for a year … and you’re still wrong. You can say it all you want and if it happens at some point in the next five years, you didn’t predict anything. I can guess 10 of hearts and flip over - one by one - an entire deck of cards and be right once. I have been reading your crap for months on this blog and you never make any sense or post anything meaningful. Perhaps you should try being a hot dog vendor since you want to choke Hal with one anyways. Indiana must grow some real morons.

I’ve been saying it for over a year now…Cueto is going to be the best pitcher on this staff. Our rotation is going to be awesome if Arroyo decides to concentrate on baseball and not playing his guitar and chasing those queen city hooties.

Sounds as if Cueto had it going good today. I hope he can keep it up.It looks as if the pitching will be pretty good. I believe Herrera should get a good look with the Reds. He has done very well when needed. I also think Baily should make the club. If not as a starter then long relief and spot starter. He’s had a good spring.

It likely had something to do with acquiring Hernandez in the first place. If the Reds starts drafting Latin catchers then we’ll know that’s the plan. :)

Bray has been a candidate for extended spring training or a bus ticket to Louisville for more than a week now. And maybe it’s overstating something here, but any coincidence that Dog Hernandez was behind the plate had something to do with Cueto’s excellent outing? No hablo espanol?

I forgot to check with Jim T if I could send this but anyway.Cueto looked great today and Bray just bought his ticket to someplace other than Cincinnati right now(maybe later this year). DUSTY,Give Harera a chance!

Hopefully cueto can keep this up and live up to his potential which would be huge for this team, also i dont think Bray should be on the Roster come Opening Day-it should be given to Harera or Viola. GO REDS!
