Reds sign Perez, Cuban outfielder
The Cincinnati Reds dipped into the Cuban baseball pool again and extracted a raw 25-year-old lefthanded outfielder named Felix Perez to a $550,000 bonus.
Perez has been in the Dominican Republic for nearly a year and the Reds admit he has not had top-notch competition. But the plan is to send him to Arizona for evaluation. Then he’ll be sent either to low Class A Dayton or high Class A Lynchburgh, “But at his age we know he has to get to Double-A real quick,” said Vice President of Player Development and International Operations Bill Bavasi.
“He has all five tools, but nothing jumps out at you,” said Bavasi. “He’s a baseball rat, just loves to play, loves the game. He’ll play in any game we ask him to play and work out for us at any time. A lot of those gkuys are very guarded about what they’ll do.”
Tony Arias, the Reds Latin American scouting coordinator said, “He can play all three outfield positions. He is an average runner with an average arm. He has been through a lot over the last two years and I like how he has handled it. He is not a Hall of Famer but he can fill out a role in the outfield.”

There are many players in Tamiami Park, Miami Fl Wood Bat league (MD League) that are far better than Felix Perez and will play for less bonus. $550k for AVG player; he is not avg MLB material to me. I give credit were I see it and again there are many players there that can do the job better than him. He went 0 for 3 with a pitchers that were under 88-89 mph.

i Saw Felix Perez playing 09-12-2010 in Miami-Tamiami Park for Miami Dade Wood Bat league. He went 0 for 3; no hits! Got caught trying to steal second 12 feet before the base. He did not impress me at all. Did not sit with team in dugout thought he was to hot to stay with them. Not exactly a AA or A ball player no manners. Had in that games that will make him look like little league.

Can anyone out there explain why Dusty uses Cairo as a pinch-hitter? He is 1 for 15. Harang could do that well. Oh, where are you Juan Castro?

$550000.00 and is an “ok” fill in player who will probably be ok - are you kidding me??? - what about the other hard working kids who are putting their time in with the organization - and have the potential to make it - what a slap in the face - either be excited by the kid or leave him in cuba but why take a position from someone else if you don’t think he will be that good???

Ahhhh, the Dude must be saying that our manager has been lieing to us, when he says, “we work on bunting everyday”!Actually, yes I do think someone is teaching improper bunting technique: Since they all hold the bat at an improper angle to begin with; and then proceed to drop the barrel just prior to contact, making the bat below parallel—yes, I do believe bunting techniques are improperly taught! Just like sliding techniques are poorly taught. Oh, and I wonder when Stubbs will be unvailing his newly taught drag bunting technique, Dusty said they were working on with him????

Ahhh, Dude: NOW HEAR THIS! Bulletin, Bulletin: As of this date in history, and without playing for the past two weeks, Chris Dickerson’s batting average is STILL higher than Drew Stubbs!

So, Heisy can play center field here, but he can’t play it in Atlanta—BS Baker! Your convoluted, moronic justifications for playing people you and Jocketty decided were can’t misses, is REAL TIRED! In addition, by playing Janish at third instead of Cabrera, means you have that one incorrect, as well! Your playing the SS with the best range, in the position where less range is necessary—that’s clever. Does this, once again, have anything to do with “veterans” always getting preferance? Would you please fire yourself, since no one else is smart enough to do it. Your team wins, in spite of your idiocy!

Only reason Dickerson dosen’t have a blunder is the fact his isn’t playing.

He might not be able to close but Rhodes could. Worn cleat, do you honestly thing someone would teach a person to bunt like that? Dont you think Cueto is capable of just stabbing at the ball on his own. If these guys did everything they were coached to do, Votto and Phillips would not have gotten caught off base last night. MAC, your legititate player look like he was trying to hit a whiffle ball against the Nat’s last night. He didn’t look much better in the series with the reds. Nothing wrong with the outfield they have right now.

AVG player overall, but he can fill an OF role w/ the Reds?? Kinda says it all doesn’t it? I may be way off base, but I can’t help but wonder how much better team/org. would be if they’d spend money for legitimate players (Matt Holiday) instead of all the AVERAGE players they’ve wasted money on (Patterson ect.) over the last few yrs?

Can he run bases? Votto and Phillips base running proves that CDickerson’s baserunning blunder last year{none this year by-the-way}is not limited to part time players—the starters can be pretty embarrassing on the bases, as well. Fundamentals— brings up the question: who the hell teaches Cueto how to bunt? He ALWAYS stabbs at the pitch; and lowers the barrel of the bat from above the handle, to below the handle, while stabbing at the ball! Whoever started this technique of teaching bunting is as unknowledgeable about bunting, as are those who allow tagging sliding baserunners too high on their anatomy, instead of tagging their sliding feet, at the bag, or plate!
