Flyers fall out of AP basketball poll

The Dayton Flyers dropped out of this week’s Associated Press men’s basketball poll. UD, ranked 18th last week, is in the “receiving votes” category in the poll released today.

Three teams that weren’t ranked last week are in this week’s poll: Syracuse (10th), Notre Dame (23rd) and Vanderbilt (24th).

Kansas, Michigan State and Texas remain 1-2-3. Ohio State dropped to slots to No. 17.

Besides UD, which went 1-2 in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Classic over the weekend, Xavier is the only other Atlantic 10 team mentioned. The Musketeers also received votes (67). That puts them a few slots ahead of UD, which received 48 votes.

IN THE WOMEN’S POLL, UD is in the receiving votes category, with 39. That would rank the Flyers 28th in the poll.

The UD women are 4-1 after winning the Purdue Basketball Travelers Classic last weekend in West Lafayette, Ind.

Was 18th in the AP and dropped to 37th?…..WOW, talk about no respect. It’s going to be almost impossible to climb back into the top 25 this season because of these two losses.

Sorry, but it’s now clear that the Dayton Flyers were highly overrated in the preseason. Are they a good, middle-of-the-pack team? - yes. A top 25 team? - NO.

Reality sets in. UD isn’t bad but showed too many holes in Puerto Rico to presently be in top 20. More like top 40.

If I hear a Flyer player, Flyer coach or WHIO radio announcer use the term “this player or that player needs to step up “, I think I’m going to vomit.

What’s really sad is how Brian Kollars still has not learned the difference between the words “to” and “two”. You can’t be successful in big-boy basketball with one 4 star recruit and no size.

That the womans team isn’t ranked after wins over then #10 ranked Michigan St., ranked Purdue, and Georgeotown with their only loss by 2 points to a then #19 ranked Louisville is nothing short of an injustice. Sadly, for the men, if they had won the Kansas St. game, they come home 3-1 and still ranked in the top 25. They’d have to reel off 10 straight wins in the non conference schedule to potentially sniff the top 25 again, but I don’t see them sweeping their 3 road games at Miami, George Mason, and New Mexico.

Who are the Dayton Flyers?

By Dayton Rules

A team like UD, his sooooooo much history, especially in The NIT, with championships, should always be in the Top15. All those NIT folks! 26 thousand people at UD arena. Their education is on par with Harvard. Just ask one of their obnoxious alumni! Over Rated? You bet you ash! XU will be top 15 in 3-5 weeks, win the A10, go to the NCAA, sweet 16… Dayton will go to their favorite tournament, the NIT!

so they lose to the #4 team by a small amount ….beat the number 19 team by a small amount and lose to Kasas St. a team in the big 12 and all of a sudden all the haters come out…they fall into the bottom of the top 40…so lets take a better look at this…they are down to 1 point gaurd just for a while longer i say go flyers mature and keep winning games you are supposed to win like the rest of them until march

Flyers are missing one thing that has always been a UD forte’—-a perimeter shooter

Dayton and the NIT are one in the same - that should count for something. Were they over rated, sure. Are Dayton fans feeling down, sure. Am I happy about that, sure. Dayton fans need to realize one very important thing - this is Dayton. We can be in the top 10 in murder rate but basketball we are only 2nd or 3rd best in division of our conference. So UD fans, before you starting slugging your 32 beers at the game, remember you are only slightly better than Wright State and Xavier is still a better program. Chris Wright can dunk - well so can my 16 year old son.

Those ud fans that were talking about Elite 8 need to get some help. How delusional can they be?!?!?! It takes 3 wins to make it to the Elite 8. Hell, ud has one 1 NCAA game in 25 years. What kind of moron would think they could win 3 in one season? SIMPLY DELUSIONAL.

UD out, UC in next week…sorry flyers, you can’t play with the big boys. Thanks for holding the area up while we rested for a few years though.

The arrogance of so many of these comments is really sad. Do any of you “fans” have a life? Game 4 and the season is lost? No chance for Top 25? All smoke and mirrors? Lotsa ball to be played, and The Flyers can peak in February, right on schedule.

Just ignore the idiots. UD went 2-2 against four likely NCAA tournament teams. They did so without one of their two point guards. I couldn’t find anyone else near the top 25 who has played that rough of schedule (except for Villanova =).

You must not have looked too hard Matt. A lot of teams play in good conferences and can’t play difficult games before they get into their conference play. It’s the exact opposite for UD. They have to play the “tougher teams” early on.

See the future: UD will heal in December with the usual cupcakes. January and February will bring incredulity from the UD fans when they aren’t in the top ten. They will get into the NCAA, win one game, and be eliminated. The UD community will talk about next years recruits.

how about some love for the women’s team who has proven they can play with the best in the country? dayton is so obsessed with the men’s team, but could care less about the women’s team who is playing better than the men right now. the women will be in the top 25 before the men get back in

Aaron, my comment was straightforward. At this point in the season, Dayton has played the 2nd hardest schedule in the country. That will obviously go down as the rest of the non-conference season takes place, but the usual complaints about UD are inflated record due to poor opponents. Currently, they are 2-2 against very strong competition, yet people are still unhappy. shrug I’m thrilled with the team so far (though I would have preferred to beat KSt.)

Wow, a very upset Flyer nation. Bottom line is the upper class-men did not play well in PR. The sophomore’s carried them the first game. I’m not very happy either but I will get over it. They where simply ranked too high and our expectations where even higher. Time to relax and let itself play out.

The Flyers had a chance to prove that they were good enough to run with the big boys and failed. One win over an OK G Tech team and two subsequent losses just proved to the AP pollsters that the Flyers are posers. Now go play the rest of the cupcake OOC schedule and hope that the NCAA committee doesn’t give you a 12 or 13 seed come March….Assuming you get in.

I’ll repeat myself: 2-2 against tournament teams is good.

By Joe Pyne

November 24, 2009 2:26 PM | Link to this

Of course 2 and 2 against potential tournament teams is great! That why the Flyers DROPPED 19 slots on the AP pole. Get a grip man…..it stinks to lose two straight against anyone. Playing in Puerto Rico was great except if you are to be taken seriously you have to WIN two out of three, not lose two out of three. The NCAA tournament committee will look at UD and say..”Yeah, they’re 27 and 5 but who did they beat”? (paraphrasing) It isn’t going to do you any good to beat the hell out of weaker teams that you are supposed to beat anyway. No, this was your golden opportunity to make a statement to the NCAA committee because God knows you don’t play anybody that counts (other than Xavier). The time to step up was this past week and the Flyers dropped the ball.

Do any UD fans read this paper? All the comments are from frustated people from other schools, who want to smack down a very good Dayton team. Voting in the polls is based on BCS school names, not on how good a team is.

Some of you need to relax. You have a great town and a great school in U of D. As an out of towner with a child at UD, I can tell you there are a lot worse places to be. Celebrate yourself!
