Jarvis council’s pick for empty seat
BEAVERCREEK — City Council has picked its newest member from a pool of nine applicants who were interviewed last week.
With a 5-1 vote council chose Brian Jarvis, a mission assurance manager at Northop Grumman, to replace Jarrod Martin who was elected to a state representative post in November. Councilman Scott Hadley nominated and cast his vote for Deborah Wallace, who ran for council in 2007.
Jarvis said he applied for the spot because he felt he could help the city overcome some of the challenges it is seeing brought on by growth and new development. “I want to make sure residents feel they have a voice on council,” he said.
Jarvis will be sworn in later this month. He has lived in the city since 2002 and moved to the region in 1966 when his father worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. A Stebbins High School graduate, Jarvis attended Wright State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a master’s degree in computer science.
As the lone African American on the board, Jarvis will bring some cultural diversity to a group now made up of three men and three women. Jarvis said he thinks diversity is important, but not just diversity for diversity’s sake. “I think it’s important, but I think what goes along with that is a person’s character and what they bring to the table,” he said.
Mayor Julie Vann said she was “astonished” at the number of qualified people who applied for the vacant seat. There were 14 applicants, nine of which came in for interviews, according to city records. “Beavercreek is blessed with a lot of talent and good leadership,” Vann said. “We had quiet a few applicants that were really quality people.”
