Marshall advances to state final
Juwan Staten scored 22 points and Marshall overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to stun Circleville Logan Elm 62-53 in overtime in Friday’s boys high school Division II basketball state semifinals.
The Cougars (22-4) return to OSU’s Schottenstein Center at Columbus for Saturday’s D-II state final against the Akron St. Vincent-St. Marys/Columbus St. Francis DeSales winner at 5:15 p.m.
Marshall was without junior inside presence Greg Gainey for much of the game. The junior who averages 18 points limped through three early ineffective minutes, pulled himself and didn’t return.
But DeAngelo Gates filled in with 15 rebounds and 10 points to offset that loss. Staten hit 12 free throws and Shawn Robinson knocked down the biggest 3-pointer in school history with about :06 left to draw even at 47-all and force OT.
Christian Delemos put the Cougars up early in OT, then Logan Elm chased — and fouled — Staten and Robinson while trying to play catch-up. Instead, Marshall pulled away, completing a game-ending 30-11 run in the fourth quarter and OT.
The Cougars will be making their first appearance in a state final since the 1990 Colonel White squad won the D-II title.

I have known most of the Thurgood players and their families for years. Not only are they good athletes they are good quality young man and sound students. They display very good manners at home, in school and the within the community. Their success is a direct reflection on their characters, their family and community support and a large thank you ought to go to Coach R., the principal, the Athletic Director and the school staff. This just goes to show the state Dayton Public Schools has quality personnel and student / athletes. The Trotwood community thanks you and commends you on your success.By statetime

Good comment Kurt. Dayton Public Schools academics is a total embarrassment. But you have to remember, when the school district was in financial trouble, they chose to cut staff and not athletics. No wonder the kids don’t learn. The district is too focused on athletics and not enough on academics. It is no wonder that the students are last in academic achievement, the laughing stock of the state. But go win Thurgood Marshall. YEAH!! Too bad you lose where it really counts. How much you really know and what that does for you in your future life after basketball. But the way, what drug is Fairfield schools on. They want to hire Jonas Smith? Take him from us and good riddance.By LaTia Jones T.M.H.S

Charterschoolhater - I always love it when someone who has never attended a Dayton public school comments on the quality education based on a state test. The problem is parents not doing their jobs not the lack of good teachers or money. Sure we may lose some good teachers to higher paying districts but we also have some loyal teachers that believe in our system. A good education is there to be had but a lot of them don’t take advantage of it because the parents don’t make them. My class had 2 Ivy league attendees. The class before me had 3. I tested out of College calc as an incoming freshman. I scored 1400+ on my SAT and a 28 on my ACT (scored low 22 on science because it was biology heavy but i took physics and chemistry) Does it sound as if I was poorly educated? By the way I attended Colonel White. Many of my classmates are very successful. My sister graduated from Stivers and she’s on the Dean’s list every quarter at WSU. My brother had a full ride to WSU. But our parents were always on us about our education unlike the parents of most inner city youth. If you compared the top 50% from my class to any district in good standing we would give them a run for their money. If half our public school students take education seriously and half don’t it makes everyone look bad. If half the students score average 85 out of 100 on the test but the other half average 40 you have a 62.5% average which is terrible as a whole. The fact that the top scored so high should signal it’s not what’s being taught our who’s teaching it but how it’s being received. I used to tutor. I’ve tutored kids from CJ, Oakwood, Vandalia and they aren’t learning anything I didn’t in the Dayton public school system. Their parents are just good parents and make them work hard - make them get extra help. If you take a DPS student with an uninvolved parent and sent them to Oakwood they will still perform poorly. I’ve seen that exact scenario happen. I’ve seen that same student get into so much trouble at school one more incident would have gotten her expelled. After that Mom got involved and now she’s an honor roll student at Vandalia HS. EVERYBODY WANTS TO BLAME THE TEACHERS AND THE SYSTEM BUT EDUCATION STARTS AT HOME!!!By max

Why bring up the problems of the Dayton Public Schools instead of just focusing on the hard work this team has done to get where they are. Why aren’t we having this discussion about the predominately White school s who made it this far? Ooops that’s right none of them did. The whole region needs to be proud of these young men and quit the negative talk and give them the opportunity to enjoy this moment in their lives. How many of us know how they feel? Give them a moment to be kids and have some fun.
