GWOC adds West Carrollton, Greenville
West Carrollton and Greenville will join the Greater Western Ohio Conference beginning in some sports next season and fully by the 2012-13 academic year, the conference principals decided Wednesday, Nov. 4.
The principals voted at a regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday to accept the applications of the two districts, which currently don’t have conference membership. Greenville will be added to the conference’s North Division, and West Carrollton will join the South Division, GWOC commissioner Eric Spahr said.
The additions will increase membership in those two divisions to six teams each and total membership to 18 districts. The GWOC Central Division already has six members.
West Carrollton and Greenville will begin conference competition next year in cross country, swimming, bowling, track, wrestling, cheerleading and academics, Spahr said. They will begin conference football competition in 2012, and the addition of the remaining sports will be determined later, Spahr said.
“These are two great communities with two great followings,” Spahr said. “They support the characteristics of the GWOC.”
The conference last approved expansion in 2004, when it added Lebanon, Springboro, Miamisburg and Fairborn, Spahr said.
“We worked through that growth, and this was another appropriate time,” Spahr said.

“West Carrollton and Greenville will begin conference competition next year in cross country, swimming, bowling, track, wrestling, cheerleading and academics” How do you compete at cheerleading and academics? Didn’t know those were sports. Do they use a computer points system to determine who gets to go to the cheerleader playoffs? Or perhaps they use the BCS for academics ………… Brainy Championship Series. What a joke.
By but what about....

Who was the mysterious 3rd school that was previously discussed wanting to be part of the GWOC???????

Apparently the old Greenville AD, Fred whatshisname, learned how to mind his own business and didn’t screw it up this time. Glad to see West Carrollton back in a league. Their new AD works hard to make it a good program.

Huh? The academic competition is called quiz bowl- kind of like what you see on High Q on Channel 7. The GWOC has done it for a few years- all of the top schools have strong quiz teams.

Hey Idiot (nothing personal, that’s just the name you had), we are talking sports here. Academics don’t belong on the sports page.

I think the point he was making was that the GWOC has jurisdiction over an academic competition as well as the athletic events. When the commissioner mentioned that Greenville and West Carrollton would be joining the GWOC in certain capacities next year, and others the following year, he was listing all of the components over which the GWOC has jurisdiction. While it is not an athletic competition, the conference has jurisdiction among the member schools over other forms of competition, which is why it was mentioned in the commissioners discussion.

Now West Carrolton can quit whining about why they don’t get covered for the “great” seasons they have against a bunch of nobodies and they’ll see what a bunch of wimps they really are.

Why would West Carroltton be whining about not getting covered for playing a bunch of nobodies? They wouldn’t be playing a bunch of nobodies if they would have been accepted in to a league long before now. Those wimps are playing in a play-off game Friday night at Tecumseh if you care to come and watch a community backed, spirited school - full of wimps, be our guest.

I guess the GWOC North can now look forward to an even lower amount of computer points with the addition of Greenville. As for West Carrollton, be careful what you wish for you just might get it. Joining the GWOC South will ensure that trips to the playoffs will be at a minimum. Get ready to get spanked by the Arrows. I never knew community spirit to win a ballgame.

I have no idea why the third team was never made public. I’m assuming its because the third school has asked to be a part of multiple leagues and didn’t want to hurt their chances with the others because they had such a small chance with the GWOC.

I do find it odd that the current greenville AD resigned yesterday. Word is he was mismanaging money from the athletic dept. Anyone heard anything?

3rd team, no body is close on who that team is. Most likely you will never know publicly, unless someone from the GWOC releases that info. Good for the kids at Greenville and WC www.theseniorreports.com/shakeup.htm

Radiodavel, you’re right that nobody will say it on the record, but knowing the history of the school and the school’s current situation, it makes perfect sense and isn’t very surprising that it was them. And, how can you say that nobody was close when nobody even guessed.

Its the word on the street. Story should come out soon i believe. But we will see if the school board wants to tell the truth or lie about what actually happened. Time will tell.

Pirate Get ready to be eaten alive! You guys don’t have what it takes to compete in the GWOC! You seriously think you’ll be able to go up against Springboro, Centerville, and Wayne and still make it to the playoffs. Good luck with that! By the way the Arrows are gonna slap you like the little girls you are!

Hey CMPW! Lets see D1 Elks and Wayne are out in first round to Cinti teams. WC puts a beat down on the Broken Arrows. Twatwood gets beat and the only area team still playing is the Pirates. It’s good to be a Pirate!

Now Centerville will have two more teams to beat 77-0 every single year.

This looks like a good move for West Carrollton. They will not have to play the GWOC Central powerhouses as stated above. I believe the schools typically schedule a game against one team from the other GWOC divisions each year. They could always schedule Fairmont - good chance of a win there. WC will be competitive in the GWOC South.

WC will get rolled this friday against Tecumsah, mark my words. Also, them in the GWOC is putting them right back to 0-10, 1-9 every year…I can’t even imagine if they were in the central what would happen to them. WC football is a joke

Old Coach: If you’re referring to Fred Matix, he was retired when Greenville opted out of the GWOC several years ago. Dr. Weedy (superintendent at the time), Dr. Smith (AD at the time), and Mike Shellabarger (HS principal at the time), were responsible for Greenville’s exit. And, of course, the Greenville BOE voted to accept their recommendation. Formergreenville: As far as Greg Place’s resignation as AD: It was announced by Greenville’s girls’ basketball coach to the the team this week during practice.
