Obama jumps to 9-point lead in Ohio poll; “Joe the Plumber” not a factor
Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain by 9 points, 51-42 percent, among likely Ohio voters in a poll released today, Oct. 20, by Suffolk University in Boston.
“If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain,” David Paleologos, director of the university’s Political Research Center, said in a press release.
In the poll, 68 percent of the respondents said that they recognized “Joe the Plumber” - Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher of suburban Toledo. Just 6 percent, however, said Joe’s story - that Obama’s tax plan might hurt him - would make them more likely to vote for McCain. Four percent said they were more likely to vote for Obama and 85 percent were unaffected.
For poll details, click here.
The poll was taken Thursday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 19, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

Differences in the McCain and Obama families: McCain graduated 894th in an 899 member class at the Naval Academy. Obama graduated with high honors in his Harvard Law class. McCain married Cindy about one month after he broke up his first family. Obama, married once, close family. Cindy McCain, daughter of a rich beer distributor, has confessed an addiction to drugs and to stealing drugs. Michelle Obama, Barack’s wife, from a poor family, has degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law School.By Ethel S.

Colin Powell is the one who made the case for the Iraq war and has zero credibility. He is a General and should have known better. Shame on him!! Is he going to be an advisor to Sen. Obama? And now Sen. Biden talks about an attack on the USA within 6 months of Sen. Obama taking office just to test his metal. This statement is certainly not comforting. Being inspirational is for preachers, but running his country is for leaders like Sen. McCain. Wondered what would have happened if Gov. Palin says some of the dumb things that Sen. Biden says? Our country needs a proven leader, not a talk machine. Vote for Team McCain/Palin!By mwm

Obama leads in the polls because he is the right man for the job. Most Americans are fed up with the disfunctional state of the republican party and their lie based rhetoric. The fraud lies in another that call themself mwm in order to disrupt freedom of expression. Obviously with a fraud in the blog, their goal is to distort facts. A true republican tactic.By Alice

Go to realclearpolitics.com to see an average of all polls. On average, Obama is up in all the battleground states, even in states that showed McCain ahead a month ago (yes, the same “skewed” poll). No one can say that Obama will win by nine or that McCain will win Ohio by 2, but the averages are clear and if the election were held today Obama would win. One post on a political board and the right wing nuts go crazy. Right above this same article is another article touting the 2pt lead McCain has in another poll. They get equal coverage so the crazies really need to calm down before they have an aneurysm. Yes, the individual polls are all over the place and the only one that really counts is the one on November 4th.By mwm

Obama up by 9 in Ohio—-Cox, what are you smoking? McCain up by 2 in several national polls in Ohio and has been. And when the 200,000 votes Brunner is trying to let slide through are thrown out, McCain will easily carry Ohio. Texas and Ohio are similar, we can see throw phonies and empty rhetoric. What’s the deal Cox, trying to suppress more voters to make up for the ACORN fraud votes to limit the turn-out?By Truthsquad

You got it wrong Cox in your attempts to be erroneously biased and suppress voter turnout. Rasmussen just came out, and McCain is up 2 in Ohio, and a point in Florida, so quit using democratic skewed polling. What a mornonic poll to think as McCain has been ahead for so long. Obama would pull ahead by 8 pts. BTW, McCain is only a few pts behind nationally and gaining in Mo, NC, and Colorado.By Bill Delaney

Far from being”fretted about” as your editorial suggests, ACORN is a very real danger. Re following from Mr. Stanley Kurtz’s well documented research. “ACORN—An Anti-Capitalism Agenda To understand the nature and extent of Acorn’s radicalism, an excellent place to begin is Sol Stern’s 2003 City Journal article, “ACORN’s Nutty Regime for Cities.” (For a shorter but helpful piece, try Steven Malanga’s “Acorn Squash.”) Sol Stern explains that Acorn is the key modern successor of the radical 1960’s “New Left,” with a “1960’s-bred agenda of anti-capitalism” to match. Acorn, says Stern, grew out of “one of the New Left’s silliest and most destructive groups, the National Welfare Rights Organization.” In the 1960’s, NWRO launched a campaign of sit-ins and disruptions at welfare offices. The goal was to remove eligibility restrictions, and thus effectively flood welfare rolls with so many clients that the system would burst. The theory, explains Stern, was that an impossibly overburdened welfare system would force “a radical reconstruction of America’s unjust capitalist economy.” Instead of a socialist utopia, however, we got the culture of dependency and family breakdown that ate away at America’s inner cities — until welfare reform began to turn the tide. While Acorn holds to NWRO’s radical economic framework and its confrontational 1960’s-style tactics, the targets and strategy have changed. Acorn prefers to fly under the national radar, organizing locally in liberal urban areas — where, Stern observes, local legislators and reporters are often “slow to grasp how radical Acorn’s positions really are.” Acorn’s new goals are municipal “living wage” laws targeting “big-box” stores like Wal-Mart, rolling back welfare reform, and regulating banks — efforts styled as combating “predatory lending.” Unfortunately, instead of helping workers, Acorn’s living-wage campaigns drive businesses out of the very neighborhoods where jobs are needed most. Acorn’s opposition to welfare reform only threatens to worsen the self-reinforcing cycle of urban poverty and family breakdown. Perhaps most mischievously, says Stern, Acorn uses banking regulations to pressure financial institutions into massive “donations” that it uses to finance supposedly non-partisan voter turn-out drives. According to Stern, Acorn’s radical agenda sometimes shifts toward “undisguised authoritarian socialism.” Fully aware of its living-wage campaign’s tendency to drive businesses out of cities, Acorn hopes to force companies that want to move to obtain “exit visas.” “How much longer before Acorn calls for exit visas for wealthy or middle-class individuals before they can leave a city?” asks Stern, adding, “This is the road to serfdom indeed.” In Your Face Acorn’s tactics are famously “in your face.” Just think of Code Pink’s well-known operations (threatening to occupy congressional offices, interrupting the testimony of General David Petraeus) and you’ll get the idea. Acorn protesters have disrupted Federal Reserve hearings, but mostly deploy their aggressive tactics locally. Chicago is home to one of its strongest chapters, and Acorn has burst into a closed city council meeting there. Acorn protestors in Baltimore disrupted a bankers’ dinner and sent four busloads of profanity-screaming protestors against the mayor’s home, terrifying his wife and kids. Even a Baltimore city council member who generally supports Acorn said their intimidation tactics had crossed the line.” Your editorial fell well short of journalistic investigative standards re ACORN. Being currently investigated by the FBI is not exactly in line with being “fretted about”By larry

The major concern about McCain is that he would follow the same failed policies of Bush. This would include a perpetual war in the middle east, and, complete privatization of health care and social security. Along with continued socializing of the banking and finance sectors of our country…without benefit for the middle class. Also, at 72, one would have to worry about the ditz from Alaska and her extremist religious and social belief systems. Which are not in synch with our culture. The McCain/Palin team put their party interests ahead of the public’s interest. And, would lead down the road to fascism. The warped sense of nationalism combined with corporate powers protected, labor suppressed, church and state being intertwined and, military control. McCain and Palin have goals that are far worse. With government being intertwined with the corporate world and religion. Eventual dictatorship.By TRS

The concern regarding Senator Obama isn’t about his father or childhood stuff. I have some concern regarding his relationship with Ayers and Wright and his comments to Joe the Plummer about spreading the wealth because it tells who he is - a very liberal politician. Whoever said the Democrats are moving to the center or becoming conservative must live in a parallel universe for the Democratic party is perhaps the most liberal it has ever been. When you have a President sympathetic to the left, potentially a Congressional and Senate majority which ranges from left to socialist and a media, both print and broadcast, which is actively cheering them on rather than serving as watchdogs, there then lies a recipe for a turn to the left the likes of which haven’t been seen since the late 60s and 70s. In looking for evidence of what this might bring about, the results are grim. France is finally realizing that their venture to socialism didn’t work, Europe is still in the dooldrums and England and Canada are returning to conservative policies because they too find liberal and socialistic policies simply do not work. One only need look at this country to find the 10 poorest major cities have been governed by Democrats for years, ie Detroit, Washington DC, Cleveland, etc. At the end of the day “spreading the wealth” only makes everyone poorer and a liberal/socialistic agenda only creates a large government with large and unresponsive bureauracies that ultimately work harder at sustaining themselves then accomplishing a task. Americans are having a temper tantrum because of the economy and I don’t think they will like what they have on their hands should they wake up an find a government dominated by liberals and socialists such as is the case with the Democratic party.By Real American

Descrimination does exist in this campaign: Palin is too feminine, McCain is too old, Biden is too middle aged white and Obama is too black. They can all scream some form of card. However the only person I hear saying anything is Obama, “I don’t look like those guys on the dollar bills!”. He is the only one playing the race card! And Jay, duh, you said, “Ohio has been republican far too long…..”. Strickland is a dem and so was our former AG sex pistol. And let’s not forget Jennifer Brunner’s reluctance to verify voter addresses even though voter registration fraud is suspected. Sure don’t remember those kind of problems in the last administration!By wake up all

Your polls are screwed up. Obama supporters need to do your research on Obama before it’s too late. And what the heck is Joe Biden talking about saying there is going to be an international crisis within 6 months of Obama being elected President? What tough and unpopular decision is he saying Obama will make? Reinstating the DRAFT maybe??? You Obama supporters need to RESEARCH! Stop reading only the DDN they are biased. Why is the story about Joe Biden’s speech yesterday (10-19-2008)not in this newspaper??? Maybe John McCain is not a perfect Presidential Candidate, but why take the chance on Obama…By HuberTucky

His work in the Illinois Senate from 1997-2004? No qualities? Really? Colin Powell summed it all quite well. He talked about how far to the right the Republican party has gone. He talked about how troubled he was over McCain’s negative and misleading campaign tactics. He clearly stated that Sarah Palin isn’t qualified to be VP, and he stated that Obama had intellectual vigor and an even handedness. Now the McCain campaign is even trying to smear Powell. It’s shameful how divisive and negative the McCain campaign has become.By pamg

Obama is an admitted, self confessed felon. He has admitted committing felonies in writing and apparently verbally in interviews. He associates with known terrorists and radicals. His employment background is abysmal, his management experience is minimal. He has never held a position that caused him to supervise many if any employees. He is a created candidate who if not for his claimed race would never, ever have gotten to the point he is. There were plenty of others much more experienced and much better candidates, but being half black has worked out well for him. He has no qualities other than a very smooth presentation and a dark pigment in his skin that has gotten him to this point in the campaign. He has not been held to the same standards as the other candidates, his wife has been treated with kid gloves while McCain’s has been beat up pretty well. Michelle Obama worked with a convicted felon who at one time was on the FBI 10 most wanted, who tried to kill police and others. But, you folks are going to support him. I could go on and on about how this couple would never be where they are without their race being involved, but then that makes me a racist, doesn’t it?By polls

Incidentally, Dave, I suspect I’ve seen exactly the same e-mail from which you quote the line taken from Obama’s book about “siding with Muslims”. My delightful family sent it to me, unfortunately. Question for you: have you ever heard of the literary concept of “context”? Any words or sentence can easily be distorted when ripped out, completely context-free. The line in question being used to smear Obama relates directly to his fear that Muslim Americans (or any group) could be mistreated during a future crisis. He wrote: “…they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.” Now, maybe you disagree with that, but I do not. Context, context, context! The website www.Snopes.com is a great resource to check out the flood of Internet rumors and innuendo. Try it once or twice — it’s very informative. It directly addresses the distortions of Obama’s statements taken from his two books.By Freedomlover

Dave, even if I conceded what you say about Barack Obama’s father is true (which I do NOT), of what relevance is that to ANYTHING? He abandoned the family when his son was 2 years old, and they only saw each other ONCE before his death in an automobile accident. I hate to dignify your smear with even another thought, but could you please enlighten your audience what PROOF you have that the elder Obama was a terrorist? Or of what relevance it would be, if you could prove your wild charge? (By the way, YOU have proven the point to “Dave” that people are, in fact, spreading lies, something he doubted.) Even if his father had been a terrorist, does that mean his son is, or must be, a terrorist as well? Make the connection, please. I can’t WAIT to read your response. Incidentally, isn’t there far more “proof” that Sen. McCain could be a foreign agent of some sort? He did, after all, “crack” under torture by the North Vietnamese and sign a forced confession, which he later condemned as dishonorable, saying every man had a breaking point (which, of course, they do). But I just wonder what Republicans would say about a Democrat who had exactly the same experiences as McCain. After all, look at how they smeared John Kerry’s VOLUNTARY, honorable service in Vietnam four years ago. (And no, I do NOT think McCain is a foreign agent.)By Tim

John, the “awful racist things” being said about Obama are NOT imaginary. No, they may not be coming directly and overtly from the media or any legitimate source — but take it from me, I’m related to plenty of people who hear and willingly spread all the slime, smears and whispered talk about Obama being a terrorist, a closet Muslim, an ARAB (not an African-American), someone who will force reparations by all whites to all blacks, etc. ad nauseum. It spreads via talk radio, Internet chat rooms, mass e-mails, and especially, ALL the forwarded messages that have taken the place of neighborhood gossip over the backyard fence back in the day. If you think racist, inflammatory, inexcusable lies are NOT being spread, then you live in fantasyland. It pains me greatly to see my own family get swept into this crap, and I’m NOT looking forward to the usual holiday get-togethers this year. It’s been quite ugly within my family during this campaign, and it doesn’t promise to get any better after the election — especially with an Obama victory.By dave

So Obama’s character has been attacked, awful racist things have been said about him, and the McCain campaign has been very negative- none of which Obama can help, he can’t help that the media doesn’t ask hard enough questions to suit those of you who want to see him crash and burn. It is not his fault blame the media. Obama could have went negative and ran ads about McCain and his affair, or his associaion with an admitted abortion clinic bomber, or his ties to the Iran Contra, or the fact that McCain has voted against giving abortion protesters rights but he is pro-life. So if you want to gripe about how Obama is being treated with “kid gloves” gripe at the media because Obama can’t control that. He can’t help it that Palin continues to make an a** of herself or that McCain is erratic with a bad temper. John McCain is the one that brought Joe the Plumber into the spotlight, not Obama.
