Montgomery County GOP leader Gantt backs Portman

Montgomery County Republican Chairman Greg Gantt has jumped on the Rob Portman bandwagon, endorsing Portman for the 2010 GOP U.S. Senate nomination.

“Rob’s got that statesman’s presence, the experience in Washington. He’s more of a diplomat,” Gantt said today, Jan. 26.

Gantt was among 62 GOP county chairmen who have endorsed Portman - 70 percent of the total -, Portman’s campaign announced last week.

The campaign also announced that 47 members - 74 percent - of the GOP State Central Committee - also have endorsed Portman, a former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member and former budget director and trade representative under President George W. Bush.

Before Portman announced his candidacy on Jan. 14, Gantt said that he was worried that Portman and former U.S. Rep. John Kasich of suburban Columbus might square off in a battle for the 2010 GOP nomination for governor.

Although Kasich hasn’t formally announced for governor,Gantt said he likes a ticket with Kasich for governor and Portman for U.S. Senate.

“The stars are lining up,” Gantt said.

Other county chairmen who’ve endorsed Portman, according to his campaign, include: Auglaize, Wayne York; Butler, Tom Ellis; Clark, Lynda Smith; Darke, Cindy Pike; Greene, Marilyn Reid and Warren, Tom Grossman.

Please mr chairman resign before you steer us into an iceberg. Maybe you should do a presentation in front of focus group to see if you are the right person for the job.

Sadly most of these comments are true. We have an out of touch party chairman whose only thoughts lie in the halls of the common pleas court building. He is a lap dog to the leaders who were in charge of the party, 1980’s, when the party was run into the ground the first time. Jacobson saved and revitalized us. Gantt has put us back to the point of no return.

MCGOP? You make some great points. I am on the central committee. We really need a new chairman, maybe you would be interested. Do you need county insurance?

Don’t forget the new political director and her contribution to the losses of 2008…this group of leaders has done little to build the party. They are content to cater to the old rank and file while the party bleeds votes. They push away the base every chance they get. As far as fundraising Joe, maybe the candidates should have worked a little harder on their own. The party’s issue now is that Gantt is completely ineffective and instead of leading he tries to make everyone happy…the Party Chair is nothing more than a puppet to the same people who have been running the party for years anyway. No wonder so many who have been involved heavily in the past are starting their own groups and organizing people. They’re doing it because the local Party is a joke.

Rest in peace Mont. Co. GOP. I agree with you Joe, under Gantt’s leadership we have become insignificant. He embraced the has beens and loosers in the party. I venture to say we will never win another oper county seat under his leadership. Once the dems re-district, we will lose our house seats. Greg, do the party a favor, resign your board of election seat and go back to “practicing” law.

If I were Portman I would shed Montgomery County Chairman Gantt’s endorsement immediately. He has demonstrated to be a complete incompetent. He won only 1 county wide race in the 2008 election and that one was a given. He can’t raise any money, just ask arlene, jeff, joe, the judge candidates. Headquarters is going broke and none of the big hitters are giving him money anymore. Rob, you get no benefit with this weak endorsement. Sad but true. Where are Jeff and John when we need them most?
