Montgomery County Dems endorse casino plan
The Montgomery County Democratic Party has endorsed Issue 3, the Nov. 3 ballot issue that calls for casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.
The endorsement puts the county party at odds with leading Democratic officeholders, including Gov. Ted Strickland and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher who oppose the issue. Also, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-0hio, has cast an absentee ballot against Issue 3.
In a press release on Wednesday, Oct. 21, the county party said that the plan would bring jobs to Ohio and millions of dollars to Montgomery County, the city of Dayton and local schools.
“This plan will keep important money and jobs in Ohio,” Mark Owens, party chair said in the release. “The Montgomery County Democratic Party is proud to stand with local labor in support of State Issue 3.”

During the last election, I was contacted by phone to participate in a town hall meeting with a group of Cinci Republicans who were against the Casino proposal for Wilmington where so many had lost jobs. It is now easy to see why they were so feverishly working to stop the progress in Wilmington…they wanted the Casino to be built on the Riverfront and didn’t really care about the citizens in Wilmington or their famililies. As for hiring “licensed gambling professionals” from out of state…if we haven’t had casinos in Ohio, where would we acquire Ohio licensed professionals to begin with? The FOP was AGAINST the Casino in Wilmington but SUPPORTS one in Cinci…will there be less crime in Cinci??? I am a Democrat and I voted FOR the Casino in Wilmington, but I will vote AGAINST Issue 3 this time. If it was bad for Wilmington, I’ll assume it’s just as bad for Cincinnati and ALL of Ohio. Don’t treat my vote as though it can be manipulated at your whim. I still have the power to choose AT MY WHIM. I chose to change from “INDPENDENT” to “DEMOCRAT” solely because of the non-existent “WMD’S” and the rush to war that George W. Bush forced us into. I will never vote for a Republican again EVER. Many of the political tactics that have worked for so long have started to backfire. As long as I have a vote, I have a voice.

Another point, which I guess is more of a question: Why is it that the same people who demand that the state offer tax breaks to companies in order to draw them in to doing business in Ohio, are now demanding that any casinos be taxed at 50% or more, when the proposed rate is 35%? I would think that is PA takes 55%, and Ohio takes 35%, then the nicer gaming companies would want to be here in Ohio. But now it looks like there’s a new (yet another) proposal being thrown around. So we’ll see.

I want this to pass and am glad my fellow D’s support this effort. Once we have a casino in Dayton I am going to lay down $1000 on Red-14 so I can win enough to pay my tax bill.

Yeah why not bring a casino to our local area. Im sure we could really use the money it would bring in. There are plenty of empty places around here that we could locate one. I mean its like this people: People are going to gamble anyways why not try and capitalize on that idea and keep the money here, and not going everywhere else. I think its should be allowed here. But not issue 3 the way it stands now because we get left out in the cold. I think that other proposal that was made would be alot better for our local area. Yes to some form of gambling, but make it fair to everyone not just a select few in our state! But if issue 3 is all we have then YES pass it. At least get the ball rolling!

We can probably all agree that Issue 3 isn’t perfect. The sad truth is that it’s as close as this bumbling state will ever get to a decent gambling proposal. Does anyone here actually think politicians in Columbus can put aside their differences and create a better deal? If so, I’ve got some beachfront property in Adams County I’d like to sell you. Look…we don’t have another 5 years for that to happen. This state needs revenue NOW!!! All this will do is shift the revenue from Indiana to Ohio…period! Everyone can debate the BS about how this won’t create all the jobs they’re saying. In the end, it really doesn’t matter how many jobs Issue 3 creates! This state needs another source of income NOW…not next year or 5 years down the road. I’m voting YES because I’m not willing to pay higher taxes while we wait another decade to put together a “better” proposal. Again…the TV ads saying “casinos are horrible” are being funded by frigging casino owners!!!!! What does that tell you???

Usually if the Dems are for it, it’s probably bad for me. In this case, however, it’s non-partisan. A constitutional ammendment is not the best way to allow gambling in Ohio. It’s too restrictive about the number and location of the casinos. Just let there be gambling and allow the market forces determine where and how many. This can be done by statute instead of a constitutional ammendment. The majority of the jobs in the casinos would go to local people. Why would an employee of an out of state casino uproot his life to re-locate in Ohio unless he is a management type? Most of these casino jobs are not terribly high paying and don’t require a lot of skill - things that most Ohioans can handle. Don’t believe the hype from tha advertisements from either side. If done correctly, Ohio could benefit greatly from the jobs and tax revenue generated by casino gambling. I just don;t believe a restrictive constitutional ammendment is the answer. I’m voting no.

There is too much here to comment on, so I’m going to stick to two points. First, ALL construction jobs are temporary. It’s the steady flow of temporary jobs creates permanent employment. The construction at Miami Valley right now is temporary. Does that mean it’s not keeping 1,000 people working 40 hours a week, supporting their families and paying income taxes? Second, someone commented that gambling dollars must come from someplace, and that’s true. They are the exact same dollars that are being spent in other states’ casinos right now.

good point “smoking?” I never thought of it that way. Nonsmokers would definitely come to ohio for gambling over casinos that allow smoking.

people trip me out by giving B.S. information. What indiana is not telling you is that ” Indiana state can expect a revenue decrease of a quarter billion dollars if Issue 3 passes in Ohio”. Indiana is going to do everything they can to pursuade Ohioans to not go for this because they would lose alot of the money that ohioans bring to indiana. Get real people, for for it if YOU want it or don’t vote for it if YOU don’t want it. But vote what you want not because of what other people are telling you to vote for.

I’m all for this. I hate going to Detroit or Rising Sun for a little gambling. All the smoke in those places are horrible. We need Smoke Free Casino’s. Though wait whenever you got to the casino’s 85% of the people seem to smoke…With no smoking wont people just drive the 30 minutes to a place that will allow it? Maybe we can finally get the light rail from Cinci to Dayton to Columbus to Cleveland

It’s not as simple as creating a law to allow gambling there has to be an amendement to the constitution otherwise we’d have ganmbling in one form or another as for transfering wealth that’s funny. All business owners are in it for money no matter what company you start up.Keep in mind these are decent paying jobs that Ohio needs and that’s what companies do creat jobs. You want to make big money take a chance and start your own business.

Taxing casino revenue is the 4th largest source of income for the state of Indiana. I invite Ohioans to continue to spend money in my state and vote down Issue 3. Thank you and God Bless!!!

No political party involved? Just who is it claiming the state is losing “billions”? Not the Republicans. I’d like to see just how much Ohioans do lose in gambling per year. I’ll bet that loss figure is just as falsely inflated as the jobs figure. Again, think people. Learn to question these claims before you vote.

QUESTION: Who is paying for all the advertisements about how casinos ruin communities and don’t create jobs? … … … … … … … … ANSWER: Casino owners in West Virginia.

And sometimes my party is just moronic. It’s Democrats in Dayton want to support losers and losing issues just so they don’t get too comfortable? Is that it? Maybe it’s time to become and independent. Eh. AT least they aren’t Republicans.

I don’t like the way the Issue was written, either. unfortunately, NEITHER POLITICAL PARTY will take a lead and write a comprehensive casino proposal. If we wait for politicians to act, gambling will NEVER become a reality in this state. Yes…this is a flawed proposal, but I fear it’s the best we can do, and we need tax revenue and jobs NOW…not next year, or maybe the next, or maybe the governor can do it, or maybe 2020, or…

Even if Issue 3 generated ZERO jobs…I’m still voting for it….. Casinos are not the answer to Ohio’s problems, but they are PART of the solution. Billions of dollars leave this state every year for casinos in neighboring states. Ohio citizens are subsidizing Indiana. Ohio needs that tax revenue. These people are going to spend the money ANYWAY! They might as well spend it in Ohio!

I’m a moderate leaning conservative who has nothing personally against gambling. But I’m against Issue 3. It’s badly written in terms of helping Ohio, and it certainly should not be a Constitutional Amendment. Why not a simple law allowing casino gambling? The reality is that Casino’s do not create wealth for anybody but the Casino Owners. Casino’s transfer wealth not create it. Anybody thinking this will help the economy are fooling themselves.

Why wouldn’t you want the money that people leave Ohio for surronding states to spend there money on gambling, hotels and food. You don’t want to gamble don’t go.Simple as that.I myself don’t gamble but tired of people telling others what they can or can’t do.What’s good for them and what’s not.

Proponents claim 34,000 new jobs. Four casinos, 8,500 jobs per casino? Pure BS. They count construction jobs along with staff, but they don’t exist at the same time. Construction goes away when the casinos are built. And the casino jobs will not be new, they will only replace jobs lost elsewhere. The Dems need to get their heads out of the place where the sun don’t shine and understand gambling hurts the working class the most, those the party claims to represent.

It’s not about the city and jobs it will create for Dayton it’s about the money that leaves the state to other casino’s.Vote yes to allow gambling in Ohio and all counties will receive money they otherwise wouldn’t.Now will just depend on when the money is received what social programs the democrats will spend it on.Now that’s “thinking”.

Dollars spent on gambling must come from somewhere: skipping other entertainment, such as movies, eating out. Or skipping basic necessities, such as food, clothes. Jobs in those industries will be lost as revenue decreases. Net is no new jobs, only the same number of jobs in new locations.

Even if casinos were a good idea for Ohio, this proposal is not. 19,000 of the promised jobs will be construction jobs that will terminate after the facility is constructed. On top of that, Pennsylvania taxes their casino revenue at 55% and this proposal calls for 35% taxation. Don’t be fooled by media, this is not a good idea for Ohio. Vote NO!

Pathetic really. It makes no sense, but when people are desperate, they will hope/pray cling to anything. That whole thing is a crock of crap, but I guess that is familiar to the Montgomery Democrats, considering the candidates they endorse, why would anyone expect the stupidity to end there?

If the Democrats want it that means it will only profit the local union bosses, if they are lucky. These “jobs” are mostly bartenders, servers, and hotel maids. The contsruction jobs will last only a year or so, then they will be gone. Think people!

I just want to say that i was really considering on voting for issue 3 but after the research i did i realized there are no jobs promised to dayton residents, the jobs that it will bring is promised to the people in those cities. now can someone tell me how that helps dayton where there are no jobs. I bet if i moved to any of thoses cities i wouldnt have a problem getting a job now but what about dayton why isnt anyone doing anything about no jobs in dayton instead of four major cities that dont need jobs!!

The Donkey Party is at it again. Too bad they are so short-sighted. The casino’s would not even be close to Montgomery County. And they think they can run the Country? Vote no , vote against those who seek to rob the poor and help there-self to the money supply.
