Ohio FOP endorses Strickland for governor, Portman for U.S. Senate

The Ohio Fraternal Order of Police on Tuesday, July 20, announced that it has endorsed Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland for re-election and Republican Rob Portman for U.S. Senate.

Strickland is running against Republican John Kasich, a former Columbus-area U.S. House member.

Portman, a former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member who was budget director and U.S. trade representative under President George W. Bush, is running against Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.

The FOP also endorsed Democrats in three other statewide races:

*Incumbent Attorney General Richard Cordray over Republican Mike DeWine of Cedarville, the former U.S. senator.

*Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, Franklin County clerk of courts, for secretary of state over Republican Jon Husted, the state senator from Kettering.

*Incumbent Democratic Treasurer Kevin Boyce over Republican Josh Mandel, a state representative from Lyndhurst.

For the Ohio Supreme Court chief justice, the FOP endorsed Republican Justice Maureen O’Connor over Democratic incumbent Eric Brown.

In the second contested high court race, the FOP backed incumbent Republican Justice Judith Lanzinger over Democratic challenger Mary Jane Trapp, a state appeals court judge.

The FOP did not endorse in the race for auditor between Democrat David Pepper, a Hamilton County commissioner, and Republican Dave Yost, Delaware County prosecutor.

Duh! The casinos haven’t been built yet. Maybe that’s why they’re not bringing in any money yet?

Seems that this is the same union that told us how great it would be for creating new jobs if we only voted to change the Ohio Constitution to allow Casino’s to be built. Are you seeing any more money IN your pocket yet?

Police are necessary in society but The comments about police arriving after the fact is true most of the time, there are times they might catch a criminal in the act but usually they are late, the two words that will protect you and family Until the Police arrive is CONCEAL CARRY.Back to the point, All union leaders care about one thing Themselves and how much money they make off the members Dues. It’s as simple as that.

Of the FOP should endorse Governor Ted Stickland he really cares about working people. If a Republican is elected he will smile and say he’s for law enforcement but cut jobs their pay, benifits and pensions. This terrible Republican made recession would be another Republican economic depression, Republican Hoover cut spending in the early 1930’s making the economy worse.

The State FOP is bought and paid for by the Dems. Did you know when you join the local FOP for $35, $19 goes to pay for these Labor Union bosses in Columbus? This is my last year joining the FOP. I support our local police. They are amazing men and women. But I’m not paying for these liberals in Columbus anymore.

If you believe that members of any union automatically vote for a candidate based solely on the endorsement of their union hierarchy, you’re kidding yourself. Union leaders might want to think that’s the case, but based on my experience, I don’t believe it’s accurate.

The FOP always endorses Dems but almost all their members are volunteering on Republican campaigns.

Nothing new here, just the same old union people who can’t speak for themselves and are told how to vote.

@ Sally and PROTECT ME!! WAH!!: Please provide proof of your accusations of widespread thefts of drugs, guns and cash from the Property Room and a “crime racket” by Dayton Police officers. Yes, one DPD officer did steal a gun from the Property Room. Other DPD officers gathered the evidence of his crime. He’s no longer on the department and served a prison sentence. Unfortunately, every profession has some “bad apples” and police departments are no exception. However, also as in every profession, the good employees far outnumber the bad. Without proof, your statements are simply your unsupported opinions which appear to be based on the fact that you loathe the police (until, of course, you want them to assist you)

You pig opportunists have access to all of the guns, cash, and drugs in “the evidence rooms” (and..at your leisure… use it all the time)…so why are you endorsing any politician? You corrupt “flocks” are more aggresive than I couldn’t even pray to be!! I’m trying to understand here…do you need to endorse a politician to clear the skid marks out of your pants due to previous encounters with them….or is it that you like the process leading up to the skid marks?

To all of you that are saying the GOP is against the interest of the workers ask this question, “What good has the unions done lately?” Birds chirping, Thought so.

This no surprise. If Kasich is elected, he will slash all public employees, including teachers, police, and fire. And then, he will turn around and do what Chris Christy did in New Jersey and hand all that money back to the rich in form of tax cuts. Look it up. Kasich is out of the same mold.

The FOP should be ashamed of themselves for their endorsement of Strickland. Will they explain as to why they came to this conclusion? Didn’t think so. No more contributions to any FOP fundraisers from me.

As an FOP member, most of my brothers are extremely conservative on all social issues. The “prison shrink” now governor does not speak for us. The state FOP should be ashamed for this endorsement.

All private citizens have to give up some of their private assets to pay for services and to keep government running. They are called taxes, and without them we would have a run down, corrupt country. Unfortunately, the rich have to pay their share too. I think people forget that. They will pay a higher percentage than those in the lower classes, but it comes out to be the same proportion of their incomes. This is called progressive taxation, to ensure everyone pays essentially the same proportion of what they make. Its not “stealing” or “keeping private money private.” we all have to pay for our government. Sorry rich people. You have to as well. The claims of government stealing money from private citizens are totally bogus.

Cops today are the new breed brought up by the new education model crafted by the liberals in the 60’s and 70’s. Most of these cops today couldn’t hold a candle those who were cops before 1985. Why would anyone expect anything different, just watch tv and listen to that whiney Lt. Bean talk. No more levies or tax increases for me.

Don’t be daft, Thomas. The GOP is not about “keeping the rich, rich” so much as they are about keeping private assets private. Or, more plainly, keeping YOUR assets from being confiscated by the government. Are you rich? Are you less than rich? Either way, if you worked for your assets, you ought to be able to keep as much of your assets as possible. Why do you have a problem with that?

Of course the FOP would endorse a democrat governor. The FOP is not looking for Ohio’s private sector to grow. The FOP is too busy kissing up to the illegals.

Unfortunately, the article gives no reasons for the FOP endorsements. Is the union afraid to explain its actions?

As a firefighter, I never listen to who the union endorses. Be a man (or woman). Make up your own mind. The cops will definitly pick the loser this time.

A union most definitely should support dems as the GOP is strongly anti-labor and always has been. The GOP is about keeping the rich, rich.

The 2009 FOP State Conference keynote speaker was Lt. Governor Lee Fisher. Surprisingly, they endorsed Portman over Fisher. I have no idea why the State FOP has been supporting the Democrats, but it’s been that way at least since they picked Sherrod Brown over DeWine. The local Lodge seems to lean more conservatively than the State.
