Task force moves toward an independent Antioch College

The task force charged with developing a plan for an an independent Antioch College met on Oct. 13 in New York City with Antioch University Board of Trustees Chair Art Zucker and Chancellor Toni Murdock. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the chair and chancellor on the work of the of the task force over the past three months, and to elicit their thinking on the strategies being considered by the task force.

“The meeting was positive and constructive, and we made significant progress toward formalizing a resolution,” said Richard Detweiler, president of the Great Lakes College Association and mediator/chair of the task force, in a media release. “It is clear that everyone sitting around the table shares the commitment to the creation of an independent college, and that the only question is the optimal route forward, particularly in these financially turbulent times.”

The task force will continue its work in the coming weeks, refining the approaches it has been developing based on the meeting’s discussions.

A task force of Antioch alumni and trustee representatives in July adopted a resolution to re-establish an independent residential liberal arts college as soon as possible. Antioch College closed June 30 because of declining enrollment and other issues.

As long as a degree from Antioch only qualifies one to work at Starbucks or be a “community activist” these folks are wasting their time. 1960’s style Hippies are not a hot item in today’s job market.

Smoke dope, protest everything, have (gay) sex, attend class occasionally, learn to hate”the man”, come out about as ignorant as when you went in—-that’s where I want to send my kids!!!

Martha, sounds like any kids you raise wouldn’t need to go to a new Antioch to become ignorant.

The Marxist, pseudo-intellectual, wacko’s that run Antioch are out of touch with the real world. Would you hire some kid who just spent the last four years of his life being “educated” by Antioch? Not me.

David, I’ll take a shot in the dark here and guess that you aren’t likely to have any off-spring to send to Antioch—unless you and your “life partner” adopt. God bless you.

It really concerns me that the only comments I ever see on this website come from an extremely prejudiced viewpoint. Are all Daytonians really this narrow-minded or are the narrow-minded people the only ones who consider this publication real news and feel they need to comment on it?

Wow, attacking each other on a message board…real mature. College is college. When someone goes to Antioch, they know exactly what they’re getting, so don’t bash them for going there. A lot better than the millions of people who don’t go at all or drop out.

I review resumes from time to time. When I see one from a graduate of Antioch, it goes directly in the trash. The last thing I want is a hippie/liberal/Obama-loving/Marxist working for me.

I am part of the Antioch Class of 2008. I have learned very much in my years at Antioch College, and have found myself in a very rewarding job right out of college. It disturbs me to see how stereotyped Antiochians are. Not all students and/or graduates of Antioch are pot smoking hippies who are gay. These types of narrow-minded beliefs are what is destroying our communities. It’s a shame that so many are tarnishing Antioch’s name.

Antioch is a wonderful school for anyone wishing to study the arts. I hope to see it re-open soon for the good of Yellow Springs and for the good of Dayton. Bring back free-thinkers!

Further, I went to UD and this [Smoke dope, protest everything, have (gay) sex, attend class occasionally, learn to hate”the man”, come out about as ignorant as when you went in] summed up 1/2 the students. Stop being so narrow minded. It isn’t the school, it’s the student. You want your kid to come out on top, stop using the institution as an excuse for the poor jobs parents are doing at home. Stop wasting your time bickering and start raising your kids to be more than “starbucks employees” (although there is nothing wrong with that either).

The (made-up)name Mumia Abu-Jamal should tell everyone all they need to know about Antioch. Good riddance.

Wow, what can I say? I think it’s obvious that anything that inspires so much gnashing of teeth from hateful, mean-spirited people is worth saving. Don’t like gay people? Great. Try and send your kids to Cedarville or some other repository of godly gay-bashing and Good Book learning. But I can tell you that an Antioch education means something to employers in New York, Chicago and elsewhere — it means whip-smart, enterprising and unconventional thinkers and doers.

It is too easy to leave anonymous, mean-spirited and hate-filled comments as ones that I’ve just read on here. Where is all this hatred coming from? That there would be homophobic sentiments expressed on here furthers the need for progressive liberal arts colleges such as Antioch College to thrive in southwestern Ohio and be made available to new generations of students. Really, it is too easy to be hateful…

In fact, Antioch College has educated some of the greatest, most influential minds of this century. Antioch College has produced seven MacArthur “Genius” Fellows. Only five schools, including Harvard, Princeton, and the University of California, Berkeley, have produced more. Yale and Stanford are among four schools whose graduates have also received seven of the coveted grants. Antioch also counts among its alumni two Nobel Prize winners: in 1996, Jose Ramos-Horta ’84 received the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2007, Mario R. Capecchi ‘61 was awarded the Nobel prize in Medicine or Physiology. In January 2007, In the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), Antioch was ranked in the top twenty percent of U.S. institutions whose students go on to earn a research doctorate. Antioch had risen nearly ten places since 2006 in the SED ranking. Rank is based on the total number of doctorate recipients from each baccalaureate-origin institution. The fact that Antioch has risen in rank means not only does the college prepare students for graduate school, but has become more adept at doing so.

For those who disdain Antioch College, you are more than welcome to your opinions. Antioch College has more than proven its mettle, its graduates’ worth, and its place as a beacon of liberal arts education in the world.

What interesting times we live in. I am an Antioch College graduate, and I am where I am today because of it. I am an Executive Director of a very successful, nationally recognized nonprofit and advocate for media issues at the local, state and federal level. I am not a freak, flake, nor drug addict, thank you very much. I am a young adult who, because of the real world education Antioch provided me, am far beyond many of my peers in similar fields. Furthermore, I would be careful to dismiss Antiochians because we are all over the world in many influential sectors, and some of you may have to work with us someday. Many of you have obviously never met an Antiochian.

I truly pity those who attack Antioch with such ignorant indiscretion, Antioch has long served the community of the Miami Valley in quite literally thousands of different ways. From the McGregor school (now a separate institution) to the student teaching done in area schools, to the activism which has helped keep some of the worst polluters from dumping toxins in your backyard, Antioch has been a proud part of the community. As for Marxism, I have never met a Marxist at Antioch. Marxism, like all “isms” is an orthodox ideology that requires its adherents to ignore the evidence of their own experience, something no Antiochian would ever do. As for only being qualified to work at Starbucks, look around you, central Ohio is dieing a slow post-industrial death, what is the unemployment rate in Springfield? Xenia? Dayton? NCR, Mead etc are either pulling out or scaling down. Very soon John, Michael and Redneck, you should be so lucky as to have a job yourselves, and will be hard pressed to find any college educated applicants to hire.

As to the derisive comments from’martha’ and ‘redneck’- the education I received at Antioch prepared me for the real world. Teaching, working with non-profit organizations overseas benefiting refugees in a war zone and so much more. What have you done with your lives to help your fellow man/women?

LOL, Martha, you obviously don’t know many gay people. Lots of us have kids the natural way. And it’s hardly as if heterosexuals have done such a great job of protecting all the children in the world. You should be glad that gay people adopt.

It’s obvious by all of the comments from the bigoted redneck inbreds on this board why nobody wants to locate a business in the Dayton area, and why so many people want to leave.

I have been teaching at Antioch College since 2001 and am currently teaching at the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute in Yellow Springs, as we strive to keep the spirit of Antioch alive and wait for negotiations to succeed. I am also teaching part time at Ohio Wesleyan University and have been on the faculties of Middlebury College, Connecticut College and Cornell University. I mention all of this to say that I have taught many different student populations. Antioch College students (as well as the current Nonstop students) were/are especially probing in their work, supportive of each others work and focused on developing a strong, open and honest sense of community. Many of them have worked hard and creatively in the struggle to save the college. I have also found the students here to be willing to take risks in their intellectual and creative work. The skill that has especially helped them in seeking work after college is the ability to be creative and articulate problem solvers. Jill
