No other Joker? Should Heath Ledger be the last Joker?

Batman has squared off against other Jokers, but a group of Heath Ledger devotees said he was the best and should be the last actor to play the super villian.

A trio from Buenos Aires, Argentina recently launched the petition website “Heath, The Ultimate Joker” .

It calls for movie studios to withdraw the demented clown from any future Batman movies.

Heath Ledger as the Joker

The petition had 17,541 just before 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.

“Can you imagine the super human efforts film companies would have to go through to find a fourth Joker after Heath Ledger? Is a better Joker even possible to imagine? Entertainment producers ‘sorry, but it’s simply impossible’ It’s impossible to imagine, impossible to draw or dub much less repeat the performance,” the website says.

Ledger is a hot contender to win a posthumous Oscar at the Academy Awards later this month for his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”

Ledger died of a drug overdose in January.

Cesar Romero played the Joker in the 1960s Batman TV series and Jack Nicholson portrayed him in Tim Burton’s Batman

What do you think? Are the website’s creators on to something? Was Ledger the best Joker ever? Should the Joker be retired?

He was a great Joker. Far better than anyone before him. But his performance can be rivaled. I’m sure there may be an unknown actor who can do it. But the fact that the movie performed so well can’t be ignored. The studio will try to find a replacement just for the sake of the dollar. If they find a great actor who can do it, why not? It in no way undercuts ledger.

Not only that but there can be other criminals in the world of Batman who may want to pick up the mantle of The Joker. If he wasn’t so old I’d like to see Mark Hamill do it. He did a great job in the animated series.

Just as Batman Begins rebooted the Batman series, I don’t think there should be another Joker until the series falls flat and reboots again. So maybe in the next 15-20 years. We waited 19 years since Jack Nicholson’s incarceration of The Joker. It’s not like they’re running out of classic Batman villians to play with.

He was the best Joker, hands down. But his act can now be imitated and frankly most of the movies in the past did not duplicate villians anyway. We’ll miss Heath, but to say no one else can ever live up to his act isn’t possible. There will be more.

The new Joker was unbelievable. Ledger’s performance is one for the ages. He not only took the character to a whole new level, but his portrayal of the Joker from the Dark series is impeccable. I’m quite sure it can be rivaled by another, but the directors would have to search deep for another. As long as Arnold doesn’t reprise his role as Mr. Freeze!!! Ughhhhh.

I am a Batman fan from the 60’s and 70’s and have enjoyed the various versions of Batman, Joker and all the various characters. No one else will play the Joker like Ledger did, but that does not mean ther should not be reinterpretations of the Joker in the future. Ledger is a fine actor, but I think even he would appreciate other actors continuingto breath life into the role. He played a very different Joker than Ceasar Romero or Jack Nicholson, and someone else might play a different version than any of them.

Heath Ledger was fantastic. He gave us a great performance- but instead of being remembered as the LAST Joker- let’s remember him as the FIRST great Joker that awed us all. Heath Ledger was given a fantastic opportunity, but could you imagine if he wasn’t given the chance because people thought the guy before him was the best and should be the last? Give others the chance to astound you. We may never see as amazing an act as Heath gave being the Joker… But in no circumstance should we hold back another’s chance to prove us wrong. youtube.com/thejokerblogs

Jack Nicholson’s Joker was outstanding - a lot of critics said it was the best part of the film. Ledger’s getting more love than he otherwise would because of his death. I’ll admit that I didn’t like the Dark Knight much (loved Batman Begins, though) but Ledger’s Joker wasn’t the timeless classic it’s being made out to be by some. We’ve only had, what, three actors play the role? And Romero couldn’t bother to shave off his moustache. Let’s see what fuure actors can do with the role. It’s a safe bet we won’t see anybody do it for quite some time. And it’ll take a brave soul to step into the part, especially given the praise Heath Ledger’s received.

Heath was a great Joker. The best without doubt but people have to remember he wasnt THE Joker he was an actor (damn fine at that) and for that reason we cant rid Batman of his greatest foe. Batman without the Joker would be the end of Batman.

I think Heath Ledger was the best joker of all time. when i found out that he died, my heart sunk. He was a great actor and i think that it is a great idea to show a mark of respect by making him the last joker to play in batman. I dont think anyone could have played the joker as good as he did anyway. It is such a shame that it had to happen to such a nice guy like heath ledger.

I don’t think the Joker should be retired. He was still young his best stuff probably could have came later on. It’s one thing to retire a jersey, but a comic book villan,I mean come on, it’s sad he was cut down in life real early. But that doesn’t mean retire the Joker he is an institution, he is just apart of Batman as Robin is or the Batmobile. But I don’t see how reitring the Joker would pay homage to Heath Ledger I see he has a strong following. He did a good job as the Joker, would the same be if Jack Nicholson had died playing the Joker. I just don’t see how you could think of doing this in someone’s memory, I mean would he want this done?

I love Heath Ledger and he was awesome as the Joker. However, I dont think that you should retire a character just because the actor of that character dies. I mean a character is its own person and to retire (aka kill off a character permanently) is only done for plot or the stories sake not for the actor. Its the writers choice not the fans. we do not control the story, we love it, read it but in reality we have very little control over it and thats the way it should stay otherwise go try to write the story for yourself and see how hard that is (actually get it published for the masses to read too, that is the important part that can`t be overlooked). Arch-nemesis are also very, very hard to kill off, and where the Joker was left as a character, he can be left out until a new great actor is found. However, the Joker should not be retired for this reason, Heath was a great actor but to lose such a great character would devastate the world of Batman even more.

Heath Ledger was an amazing Joker, but he wasnt the first and should not be the last. Be is voice actors or live actors, characters get reborn time and time again. Ledger did a great job, but he did not invent the role nor the character. Prior to Joker he was called Red Hood, Joker as a character has evolved throughout time and COMICS not movies. He will continue to evolve, in the near future if that means a new actor portrays the character so be it. Characters from all genres get re-done, Dracula, Frankenstien, Batman, Superman etc etc. While it may seem that no one will be as good as the original or the one that did it “best” how will we ever know if it was truly “best” if a character is not allowed to be portrayed again in the future. The problem is too many people are looking at this like a theatrical issue. Before movies there was comics, would you ban Joker from comics cause its not Ledger’s Joker…of course not. The ideal of comics is that they evolve and endure. In the end if the people in charge decide not to ever cast another actor as Joker, it will be a big loss to the genre of comics where the character came from.

20 years from now someone will be the joker again. maybe even better than ledger, who knows. it isn’t up to the fans but to DC comics/Warner to decide. and c’mon, there’s lots of great actors who would do great if they had a good character to perform as. ledger wasn’t the best actor alive, and he wasn’t the best actor of his generation. he was pretty good, but turning him into a god just because he died is just plain silly.

No. While Ledger’s performance as the Joker is extraordinary and obviously very acclaimed, the role of the character has always been open to interpretation. Ledger’s Joker is an interpretation of the Joker, he isn’t THE Joker. While I would not want to see the Joker return in the Chris Nolan Batman films, he should appear again whenever the series gets a reboot twenty years from now or whenever that might be. The character has stood the test of time and it deserves to be around for a long time. Batman’s arch nemesis has always been the Joker. As Joker say’s in The Dark Knight… Batman completes him. They need each other. It wouldn’t be right to say that the character can never be replicated on film.

This is a completely ridiculous statement. He was good, but not that good. I don’t think they’d bring the joker back for this movie series just to avoid the controversy, but if some other company decides to try and give the dark knight a new image, who’s to stop them? Atleast Jack Nicholson was original and seemed engulfed in joy. All this kid did was lick his lips alot and act crazy. Remember, the script was given to him. If you enjoyed the concept of the character that’s the writing and directing…i think anyone could have done this role. Is anyone else with me when I say Heath Ledger wasn’t even that good of an actor? I mean really…A Knights Tale? Brokeback Mountain? I’m open to counter-examples And on top of that the guy was ignorant enough to take a lethal combination of legal drugs without thinking anything of it…He doesn’t even deserve an oscar, but with the help of Christopher Nolan and the fact that he died means he will definitely win and then go down as the greatest Joker ever…fantastic

Comic book characters and comic book films are cyclical. Right now, it would be ridiculous to have another Joker for a long time (just like it was ridiculous to consider it after Nicholson’s performance) but after 20 years, times change and there’s a place for the Joker in film again. I believe this works the same way with Ledger’s performance. I obviously consider Heath’s Joker to be the best imagining of the character to ever be put on screen, but that doesn’t mean that the (many) other Batman films that will eventually come should particularly EXCLUDE the character. I’m talking like 30 years from now, there will be another Joker. Ledger’s performance was incredible, and fits perfectly with our times, but don’t put a cap on a character just because Heath did it better. Keep an open mind. In a few decades, there will be a place for a new Joker. It’s not like Heath’s performance can ever be undone. It exists, and we can all watch The Dark Knight whenever we want now. Don’t be so narrow-minded.

I’m sorry, but as great as Heath performance was, and no matter how much I like him as an actor you can’t retire the Joker. The Joker is Batman’s arch nemesis and has been part of Batman folklore for nearly 70 years, appearing in the very first Batman comic ‘Detective #27.’ It would be like trying to retire Lex Luthor from Superman, it’s betraying the character and his involvement in the overall history. Findng someone who can match Heath’s performance will never be easy, but there is still a story to be told.

What a load of crap people. Retiring one of the greatest characters ever just because an actor died. So Ledger’s performance was good and he died. So what? By following that logic shouldn’t Superman be retired too? After all Cristopher Reeve is dead too. Oh wait, there are other Supermans after Reeves. Too bad, Reeve was the best Superman i’ve seen. OK Ledger died and that’s a sad story, BUT THERE IS NO REASON FOR BATMAN AND/OR JOKER FANS TO PAY FOR IT. There is no reason why anyone should pay for it. So i think your petition is stupid, insted of doing this you should be making an statue for your idol or something ever lasting, not trying to erase his last character forever and messing with other people’s enjoyment. What about we ask for medieval movies to never be filmed again? Wasn’t “A Knight’s Tale” another Ledger movie? Sound good or stupid?

If you’re sitting here, pining away about some actor’s performance that is in no way related to you, or never knew you, grow up. He’s an actor, lets start worshiping people that contribute to society rather than people who pretend to be others in a film. As for him being the LAST Joker. If you truly believe that and think that will happen, you’re an idiot. You can’t have Ying without the Yang. Brandon Lee died during The Crow, did that stop them from doing sequels or the TV show? No. The show must go on. (stole it G) Quit your crying and do something worthwhile.

Heath literally gave his life for this role. He pushed himself, despite warnings of how dark the role was, and gave his own twist to the character, really making the villain come alive. Making it the best Joker performance I will probably ever see. For someone to do that, putting in so much dedication and hard work, we should honor that. Actors may try to outdo Heaths performance but to me, Heath will always be THE ULTIMATE JOKER.

He was a great actor and he portrayed the Joker very well and made him out to be more like how he actually was supposed to be… as compared to Jack Nicholson’s portrayal which was amazingly retarded. He wasn’t supposed to be really funny and comical, he was supposed to be pretty much exactly as Heath Ledger did it. Thank you Heath. But, I digress. I believe that he played the Joker very well but if need be, the Joker should be a character again. I don’t think the Joker will be a character in the new series with Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, but if necessary, I believe they can find a very talented actor who can fill his shoes and hopefully portray the joker as he is originally supposed to be. Rest in peace Heath as you will be missed.

I think that heath ledger did the best performance of the joker. I always say that heath ledger is a great actor and is my favorite actor, because he was a person that in the character of every movie that he did, he was like I don’t know like great like amizing… I was thinking the other day that heath had a conection with all the characters that he performanced in all their movies. so heath ledger has to be the last joker, because his performance. I’m gonna miss you heath. do you want to know something I am from Mexico. osea que heath ledger tambien esta en los corazones de gente mexicana porque en mi opinion fue el mejor joker que ha existido y si no fuera por como se entrego al personaje he shouldn’t be dead, no estaria muerto porque fue tanto que ya no podia dormir y por eso se murio de sobredosis y si no lo premian seria como quitarle el nombre a la pelicula o mas bien la pelicula no tendria escencia imaginense a la pelicula sin heath ledger seria un asco en cambio gracias a su actuacion fue la segunda pelicula mas taquillera de la historia despues de titanic por supuesto. bueno yo no tengo mas que decir que heath ledger fue y sera el unico joker de la historia porque los demas no cuentan nunca se le presto atencion a los jokers hasta que aparecio heath ledger y se murio por estar tan obsesionado con el personaje y es un merito que debe ser recordado en la historia. if you don’t understand me sorry but I prefers to write in spanish than in english so if you want to undestand the message please transate it. thank you for the memory of heath ledger thar it would be remember for all the eternity. mexicanos espero que entiendan lo que esta en ingles sino porfa traduzcanlo. en la memoria de heath ledger que sera recordado para siempre.

Grow up everyone. They will replace him, no matter what any of you say. I’m sorry he died, but it’s time to move on.

Heath Ledger was AMAZING! but i would really like to see Johnny Depp give it a shot. He is definately crazy enough. i think he would do a great job! (:

whoever made that fan site are a bunch of tarts. the Joker is batman arch rival yes there other villens but none has had an impact on batman like joker. Joker killed second robin paralized batgirl. u guy are not fans of batman. You think just because ledger did a ok job the joker should die to that SELFISH not what leger would of wanted.
