Ohioans are staying home to drink their liquor

Ohioans are drinking more booze than ever before, and they’re drinking it more often at home and less often in bars and restaurants, according to sales figures released Thursday by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.

The sales data also suggest Ohioans are quite loyal to their brands: The top-ten brands of booze barely budge from year to year, and the top three haven’t changed in at least three years: Kamchatka Vodka is the top seller, followed by Jack Daniels Black Label Tennessee Whiskey and Bacardi Superior Light Rum.

But it’s clear Ohioans’ drinking habits are changing. Wholesale sales of liquor — purchased by bars, restaurants, fraternal organizations and other permit holders — fell for the second straight year in both dollars and gallonage, while retail sales of booze in groceries and other liquor stores recorded robust increases. Overall, dollar sales reached $32.6 million in 2008, up 4.8 percent over 2007, while gallonage rose to 10.5 million gallons, up 2.6 percent.

The wholesale numbers suggest that the poor economy, the mid-year gas price spike and the smoking ban have prompted Ohioans to drink more at often at home, liquor-control spokesman Matt Mullins said.

Denny Freyvogel, co-owner of Arrow Wine & Spirits who oversees the Centerville store, said his store’s 2008 sales mirrored the state’s, with wholesale sales down and retail sales up.

And Ohioans know what they like: the same 15 brands that were the top sellers in 2007 were on the same list in 2008, with only minor shuffling of the rankings. Freyvogel said customers’ brand loyalty remains strong even in the face of price increases and a poor economy.

“People who drink liquor are going to drink the same liquor, no matter what the price,” Freyvogel said.

So when all of the mom and pop bars have to close their doors due to lost business, and their loss means their retirement is now gone, and they can’t even sell it, who will support them? All the nanny anti-smokers had better get another job to pay the taxes needed for the public dole!

Since everyone over 30 has been raised around SHS/ETS,and SHS/ETS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SO DEADLY, why are Baby Boomers the longest living of all generations? Why, since smoking has dropped from 54% to 24%, are all the diseases supposedly caused by smoking, on the rise every year? California has the oldest smoking ban and their Asthma rate is 16% and Kentucky has only a 6% rate of Asthma with the highest rate of Smoking? Why do Anti’s still say SHS/ETS KILLS, when the EPA Report they base their statements on was found to be a FRAUD by Federal Judge Osteen and two Congressional Committees? Why, did the longest/largest studies by the ACS and the WHO find SHS/ETS had no connection to Cancer or Heart Disease? Why are there more than 250 other studies with the same findings? Why can’t the Anti-smokers find or admit to any of these studies? Could it be because of the Billions to be made from the sale of Smoking Cessation Products, when their own studies show that quitting Cold Turkey is more effective? Could it be because Profit is more important to them than Health? Clearly SHS/ETS is not the Health threat they make it out to be. So, why are Smokers being treated like Second Class Citizens? This smells like it’s all about smell and discrimination caused by Greed.

Wow, I love the fact that we pay 3-5 dollars a shot, when according to DDN. the cost is 3 a gallon. dollar sales reached $32.6 million gallonage rose to 10.5 million gallons 3.10 per gallon. Don’t you wish this was true?

yada yada yada… I get so tired of hearing people blame all traffic deaths on people who have had a beer or two. Get real. Do you know how many accidents are caused by screwing with the radio? the cell phone? eating a burger? sneezing? slapping you backseat brat? scratching your a*s? looking at a hot babe? being tired from working? inproper lane changes? just being non-attentive? A LOT! So leave the people that have had a few alone! This crackdown on drinkers is JUST A COP OUT. An easy way to make money off innocent everyday people. Oh and the seat belt law is a crock too! Don’t get me started on THAT!!!

“Sara”-I couldn’t agree with you more. I wish more people would understand what it’s like to try to keep a bar in business in Ohio. We’re PEOPLE who’ve invested our money in these neighborhood places. SmokeFree Ohio LIED about no harm to businesses from smoking bans. And what bar can SELL their business for what it was worth before the ban? What investor is going to LOAN money to someone to buy a bar? To “Dayton Full of Idiots” - so it’s better people drink and smoke at home? I used to be married to someone that I prayed would drink in a bar where someone other than myself could cut him off. Spouses tend to get hit when they try that. Who keeps the drinker at home from getting in the car and driving? Does your righteousness take into consideration what the ban has done on the whole? Sara’s right. How about YOU buy a business and I’ll tell YOU who your customers can be.

Just as I suspected. Nearly three hours later and nobody can give me an answer to this question: That being said, can anybody list one, just ONE positive thing that inhaling multiple carcinogens (cancer causing agents, for the many, many morons here) deeply into your lungs does for the human body? Seriously. If the federal gubment did not have the tobacco companies in their back pocket, cigarette smoking would be almost nill in the U.S.A. It kills. Many. Everyday.

By Dumb Smokers Are A Problem

January 16, 2009 11:53 AM | Link to this

Here is something the idiot smokers don’t want to talk about. They are one of the biggest reasons our health insurance rates are so high. Most of them will get cancer and most will die early. They will cost the rest of us NONSMOKERS a ton of money because we have to pay for their stupidity. THEY SHOULD RECEIVE NO TREATMENT FOR ANYTHING RELATED TO SMOKING. LET THEM DIE IF THEY CAN’T PAY OUT OF POCKET. IF I SIT AT HOME AND INGEST POISON EVERY DAY (WHICH IS WHAT THEY DO) DO I DESERVE TO HAVE MY MEDICAL CARE PAID FOR BY MY NEIGHBOR WHO DOES NOT INGEST POISON EVERY DAY? These people have no argument. The smokers are stupid, plain and simple. Second hand smoke is a poison and no one should have to breath it. They have no right to burn a poison releasing stick in a public restaurant or bar. Should I be permitted to roll up rat poison in a stick and burn it in a bar or restaurant if I want? Stupid stupid people. Let the bars go out of business. If they can’t make money they aren’t good business people. If their customers are too disloyal to continue to drink there their customers suck. It’s not that hard to step outside for a smoke. NYC banned smoking and their entire nightlife didn’t collapse last time I checked. I was there and there are just people out on the sidewalk smoking. Of course they don’t all look like they’re 300 pounds plus up there, so the walk outside probably isn’t a big deal like it is here. Dayton’s bars are going out of business because no one has any money.

“Wholesale sales of liquor — purchased by bars, restaurants, fraternal organizations and other permit holders — fell for the second straight year” UMMMM yeah. That’s what happens when you have a smoking ban in the bars. They even had a show about this on 700 WLW about the amount of bars that have went out of business.

It is cheaper and safer to drink at home! With the economy being what it is in Ohio, the money you save by not going out can help pay for the rise in of DP&L,Vectren, TimeWarner charges.

This thing is a joke. I go out 2 or 3 times a week. The bars I go to all still allow smoking, and who cares about the DUI crap. I drink a lot, and have never got a DUI. If you hit something just jump in the passenger seat and say the “designated driver” ran off and you don’t know who they are. Never take the breath machine, lots of gum, stick with vodka, beer is smelly. Just look on the internet on how to beat a DUI. Watch the news, they tell you where the check points are going to be. Don’t speed, use your cruise control and you’ll be fine. Find a bar that allows smoking. They’re out there. Stop whining smokers! We can still smoke, support the places that let you, not the woosies that are following an unjust law. Drinks anyone?

Whether you smoke or not, we all want to live the same “AMERICAN” dream in one way or another. We spend so much time fighting against one another that it is not wonder that other countries want to fight us….we are easy targets. We divide an conquer ourselves. I guess we have become our own worst enemy. Come on Americans we are the only ones that can stop the very issues we are complaining about.

I used to smoke and quit almost 2 years ago. So being that I have been on both sides of the fence gives me the inside scoop that saying either side is right or wrong just is a never ending battle. Dayton (and Ohio for that matter) has lost almost everything that we have. I am sure if we placed our time and energy into the more important issues facing Dayton, we could find a “happy middle” where we all could live in harmony with each other. Everyone is angry about the economy but complaining about smokers or non smokers doesn’t fix anything.

I do not disagree that fewer drunks on the road is a good thing. Overzealous laws on dui, and law enforcement that spends more time on dui and traffic offenses then they do on violent crime (ask yourself how many fewer police detectives does Dayton have working crimes then they did a year ago? But every time there is one of those dui multi agency task force things there is an orgy of self congratulations on the news) (there is more profit in a dui or traffic bust then there is in investigating a “real” crime I suppose). Then you add the anti smoking crowd with your “you can’t do that in here” laws, and then people wonder why bar and restaurant business is down. The reason my friend is simple. The government ran the businesses out of business. Yeah the economy is in the tank right now, but before that happened we did everything we could in this pro union, anti business culture of ours to drive the businesses out of town, out of state, and out of the country. Things are only going to get worse after Tuesday.

We live in the state of stupid. we see no cansinos, The old arcade would be a perfect spot for one, and it would save the city of Dayton. The smoking ban is another act of do gooders. Check out airway rd. and spinning rd. some night, Wright patt security police are everywhere but the base pays private guards big bucks to man the gates. Riverside has its own police force and we don’t need the base harrassing our people. Wake up Ohio we are considered one of the dumbest in the united states. Oh no I didn’t get a ticket from them and I don’t smoke.

By Patty

January 16, 2009 9:46 AM | Link to this

After the smoking ban there was an article in the DDN that stated retail alcohol sales were up and bar sales were down. Most people realized that meant more smokers were drinking at home and the anti-smokers were not making up the difference. But the anti-smoking crowd kept insisting it was not because of the ban. Smokers got mad and so a lot of tax money was lost. Americans always find ways around stupid bans. Prohibition - bootlegging. Ban smoking and raise sin tax - bootlegging. Just because the sales for cigarettes have gone down does not mean people quit. They just quit letting the anti-s have the tax money. Currently Congress is passing legislation for children’s health care. Increase taxes on cigarettes .61 cents. Anti-s don’t want you to smoke but they will gladly count on your smoking for funding programs - make sense? So pass the legislation, but there will be no funds. More people will just bootleg.

I go out nearly every night and have a few drinks. I don’t smoke. If I go to a place that allows smoking, I leave. Most people who smoke have small incomes and are living on the fringe, being evicted and losing their cars. I don’t really want to be around those kind of people.

Really glad to read that all the people who are terrified of getting caught while driving home drunk are staying home. Should save at least a few innocent lives, maybe even some terrible injuries. I think saving one innocent child’s life from a drunk driver is worth these drunks sacrificing their “right” to smoke, get drunk and then drive home. I’m sure all the drunks on here will have their excuses…It’s only a few blocks…I’m a big man…Can drive fine after a few beers…Imagine looking into a mother’s eyes and telling her that after you just murdered her baby because your reaction time was diminished due to your “few beers”.

By Fat Dumb DUI Smokers

Good morning. I weigh 500 pounds and enjoy drinking, smoking and driving home drunk. Used to go to the bar and smoke a pack of camels and have 7 or 8 beers. I drive better when I’m drunk so don’t worry. Now that I can’t smoke I stay home. Can you imagine having to stand up and actually walk 50 feet to have a smoke? That is crazy. I didn’t get to be 500 pounds and have a lung disease by living a healthy life or walking anywhere. When I’m drinking I want to get drunk, and smoke a lot. If you get cancer because you have to work in the smokey bar, tough should have worked somewhere else. If your daughter gets killed by me driving home after my 7 beers, tough. She should have got the hell out the way. The police just harass us drinkers so much that I don’t bother going out. I only have a “couple” beers. The antis, and the nazis are winning.

Remember the good old days when you could smoke in bars and give yourself and the guy sitting next to you cancer, then have ten beers, get in the car and kill some innocent person going home from work? Those were the days. In 2006 over 13,000 people were killed in DUI wrecks. Over 13,000! IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T NOTICED, THE CONSTITUTION DOESN’T MENTION YOUR RIGHT TO SMOKE IN BARS AND GET DRUNK AND DRIVE A CAR. WE NEED A TRAIN TO TAKE ALL THE MORONS OUT OF DAYTON. WE MIGHT HAVE A FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE LEFT TO START OVER. MAYBE.

“People are tired of paying $7-$10 for a mixed drink in a restraunt which has $2 worth of materials. I dont mind if business makes a profit but, 500%-600% profit margins are uncalled for.” Sorry but it is not a 500-600% profit. You must have missed the fact that liquor went up and every other ingredient went up that goes in those mixed drinks. There is also a fuel surcharge on all deliveries now because of diesel being so high. Right now they are lucky if they are able to make $1 for every dollar they spend and that is not profit cause that $1 dollar they make goes to paying for the expenses of running the business.

People are sick and tired of being stalked by the police in this state after they have had a few drinks. This is really why puffers and non-puffers stay home rather than go out and risk a dui. Also people are getting tired of being gouged on drink prices. There are places people can go and drink real cheap and there is no shortage of business there. But in the city there is this attitude that drinks at some places can cost 3x as much as other placed just because it is in the city or in a certain neighborhood. I don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on a drink and then deal with the law circling the area looking for their next victim. If you are lucky enough to live around the corner from a neighborhood pub you are in good shape! Business slow? Blame it on the law!

They can sit inside and laugh at the smokers as they drink their drinks nice and cozy inside not smelling bad from all the noxious smoke. I just wish there was a way hurt their parade like they did the business owners with their majority. Even more so now that they have reneged on their promises to spend more money outside the home. And as a smoker, I have good grammer, compared to the non smokers on their soap boxes. I like to smoke when I drink. Not being able to smoke in a bar keeps me at home, yet it brings my friends here too. The bars may lose, but our community of friends has actually gotten closer, and the booze cost per person a lot less expensive. Overall, the state loses money on tax receipts because of the smoking ban— in bar tax receipts and employment payroll taxes. But, who cares. We do what we want to do, but in a different setting. Screw Ohio! But I do miss the broader community that bars used to provide. The idea of “people places” where folks of different economic and cultural backgrounds could congregate is now a thing of the past.

I get a good buzz going after lunch when I am doing housework. Then I slam a few and hit the bus to go in to the bar. Get a good buzz going there (since I take the bus I don’t have the pressure of driving and can cut loose) shoot some pool or just hang out. Don’t spend a whole lot on drinks cause I already have a buzz on. I hop the bus home and wind down. You gotta have a buzz going to ride the bus otherwise it wouldn’t be entertaining! If I got extra money and too much of a buzz on I take a cab home! Stress-free power drinking. The second hand smoke is enough for me. Why make it worse by power smoking?

WOW - “uke51” You go out a whopping 1 night a week. Wild n crazy guy that you are! I bet that the bars just LOVE when you come in…oh here is uke51 here to have his 1 drink and GO HOME. I bet the bartenders count on your $1 tip to pay their rent! I can tell that you are clueless just by your statement - bars were doing POORLY in a GOOD economy due to the smoking ban - period. There were plenty of non-smoking bars prior to the ban and no one went to them (for a reason!). Spare the bars you go to and stay home - really they laugh at people like you. May you come back in the next life as a restaurant/bar owner…then you might understand.

Could it possibly be the bad economy that is causing people to drink more and stay at home? Why is it with you smokers that everything revolves around not being able to smoke in public. We have frequented many establishments we hated to go into before the ban. We still have enough money to go out @ least once a week for a drink. If you quit smoking you would too.

I prefer to drink at home so that I can smoke, and so that I don’t have to be surrounded by alcoholics and crackheads.

You’re lucky they haven’t banned drinking yet. America sure is becoming Orwellian. They tell you what to believe, what to think, what to say. It’s all veiled in the benign-sounding “for the common good.” But the common good means that the individual must die; we must become as one with the Borg. In the very near futue, if we disagree we will probably be sent to re-education camps while the party bosses toast and cavort in their lavish accomodations. We’ll work harder for a bowl of rice …

The smoking ban is killing business and people drink more at home. The added drinking at home means less worry than when out so expect more alcoholism. Smokers and supporters should boycott the Ohio Lottery and Keno, lets clean Ohio up good if that’s what the nanny’s want

This is another one of those unintended consequences of the smoking ban. Instead of going to an adult venue where people could smoke and drink with like minded friends, they are now staying home and doing this where the kids are. Undo the smoking ban….save the children. Way to go Smokefree Ohio!

It is always more enjoyable sitting at home naked and having a beer, a cocktail or a glass of wine.

18 years old and can’t even buy a beer - hell 20 years old and a day shy of 21 and can’t even buy a beer. That is a crock of $h!t. People have handed their personal liberties and freedoms over and for what? Nothing. The 18 yo age stipulation was THE biggest mistake ever! It did not save any more lives on the road. As for saving insurance companies money - it may have… but just so they can line their greedy ceo’s pockets - they didn’t reduce premiums due to the alleged savings in claims/payouts. Repeal that stooopid law now!

I used to go out two maybe three nights a week to the local bar (I could walk there) where I could drink and SMOKE. Since the ban, I stay home with my drink and I can still SMOKE. I have to admit the smoking ban has saved me some money. My local bar has since gone out of business.

I go out more often now that there is no smoking in the bars. However, the DUI limit is so low, that even a 225 lb. man can only safely have one. I don’t drink at home, that’s how inbreeding gets started, just look at the ‘dry’ counties in Kentucky.

Total up what you spend drinking at a bar. Now,go to the liquor store, grab a fifth-750Mil- of what you drink. Your mixer and your munchies. On the way home get some gas and I guarantee you’ll still have some change left. Now go home and stay home and get drunk, throw up,pass out, wake up and start drinking again.

Like to sit at home with a beer, a scotch, a cig and a doobie. And of course some ladies. Only time I go out is to get some more ladies.

Why go out and party you can’t even enjoy a smoke anymore. At home I can drink, smoke, eat and do it all in my pajamas for cheap.

The only time I drink out is a single glass of wine with a great lady in a fine restaurant. All other drinking is better done at home with the same fine lady. Drinking and driving do NOT go.

People are tired of paying $7-$10 for a mixed drink in a restraunt which has $2 worth of materials. I dont mind if business makes a profit but, 500%-600% profit margins are uncalled for. Also the DUI laws( which overall have a positive effect) have me so scared to even get near the stuff before I may have to drive.
