Man sues Denny’s over sodium levels

A New Jersey man backed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest has filed a class-action lawsuit against Denny’s to try to force the restaurant chain to disclose the amount of sodium in its menu items, according to this story from Nation’s Restaurant News.

The lawsuit filed in a state court in New Jersey is believed to be the first sodium-related lawsuit against a restaurant chain, according to the NRN.com story.

Denny’s called the lawsuit “frivolous and without merit,” the NRN story said.

The involvement of the Center for Science in the Public Interest ensures that the lawsuit will be a high-profile case. Click here for the CSPI news release on the lawsuit, which states ominously that, “Most Denny’s meals are dangerously high in sodium, putting the restaurant chain’s customers at greater risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.”

To its supporters, the CSPI is a savvy consumer-advocacy group that provides a voice to the downtrodden and takes on special interests in the food and dining industry on behalf of the public. To its detractors, the CSPI acts as self-appointed food police, engaging in headline-grabbing hyperbole to encourage government intrusion into matters of food and drink.

What do you think: is this lawsuit valid and noble or frivolous and without merit?

“Whatever” should learn some English—like the difference between “there” and “their” and the spelling is not so good either—lable and sueing are not real words. Oh, by the way, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is an American group and has done some amazing things in the last 38 years from which we have all benefitted. You should look them up. I don’t agree with everything they do, but there is a fine list of accomplishments and they have our healthy interest at heart.

Denny’s and Sambo’s are two entirely separate chains.

Wasn’t Denny’s known as “SAMBO’S” a few years ago? The name was protested because it reminded a certain group of “Lil’ black Sambo”.

Dang! I should have sued McDonalds last week. The cappuccino and the cinnamon rolls were so sweet I nearly gagged and had to throw them away. Sent my sugar level sky high. Hmm..I could get really really rich!

I’m about to file a lawsuit against Cousin Vinny’s. The delicious pizza I just stuffed my face with was probably too high in sodium. They didn’t put the info on the bottom of the box. I’m calling John Rion, first thing in the morning.

I don’t think I have to eat there if I need to know sodium levels and they won’t tell me or they make it too inconvenient to find.

Look at your labels in the grocery store. We cooked some frozen chicken that was 15% solution added and it was saltier than bacon ! I think that is worse - you don’t expect frozen raw meat to be loaded with salt !

This is all so ridiculous, but what else would you expect from the same organization that started the whole Trans Fat scare.

If this is your health problem then stay at home and don’t eat out, it will be alot easier if people would stop suing over stupid crap like this, all Restaurants and fastfoods are high in everything, if you didn’t know that then go back to school and learn it.

Come on, people. You know that when you go out to eat, the food is going to be loaded with sodium, fat and whatever else they put in the food. If you don’t want to consume those items, then don’t go out to eat and fix your meals yourself at home. People need to start taking responsibility for themselves and stop expecting everyone else to do it for them.

“takes on special interests in the food and dining industry on behalf of the public” I don’t want CSPI doing anything on MY behalf. I vote that this lawsuit is not just frivolous, it’s just plain DUMB! If your sodium intake is that important, just eat somewhere else, or at least don’t eat there every day.

Hey Ken go someplace that does list sodium levels but don’t force me to do without salt or pay for a crappy label that tells how much salt is in the fries because you got the “or else” from your doctor

I was planning on sueing Taco Bell, McDonald’s and Wendy’s because there food made me fat. They did not put a warning lable on their product letting me know that eating their will make me gain weight, have high blood pressure, or maybe have a heart attack. They should have known better to serve us their greasy… fatty food knowing it could led to unhealthy life styles. Of coarse, I am the same person who presses the fruit and veggies at the store without a second glance and believe that fruits and veggies are for cows and horses. (Please keep in mine, I am being sarcastic)

Wouldn’t it be easier to “monitor their own intake of sodium” if the levels were listed - which is what this lawsuit is about, not the levels themselves, but the lack of information given!

By Likely to happen

Not a dime will be collected, probably, but Denny’s will probably start listing dietary information for many of its meals. The center is probably some individual crank, like the woman in Michigan who tried to get Married With Children cancelled and used an “advocacy group” as a front.

When does it become the responsibility of the person to monitor there own intake of sodium.

As I see 60 years of age in the rearview mirror my doctor tells me to keep the salt level down - or else ! So, I appreciate the salt levels being available in any restaurant. They should voluntarily put it in, a court suit should not be necessary. Just going by taste does not work, plus you have already ordered the food - and are expeted to pay for it. Ken

Frivolous and definitely without merit. Just don’t eat there, stupid.

Better go ahead and file against 90% of all restaurants because they have it also. Who did the scientific analysis of the food? Never heard of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Right…because Denny’s advertises being a “Heart Healthy place to eat.” Probably a fat loser just wanting a payday.
