New BBQ chain coming to Dayton area, starting in Beavercreek
A Woody’s BBQ restaurant is scheduled to open in January at 3321 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek, just west of North Fairfield Road.
And franchise owner-operator Michael York of Sugarcreek Twp. said he would like to open additional restaurants in the region, and will look at sites in the Bellbrook and Dayton Mall areas.
The Beavercreek restaurant has a “coming soon” sign teasing customers driving by on Dayton-Xenia Road. The location formerly housed Noemi’s Cafe, and before that, Grandpa’s Cafe. It has been vacant for about six months, York said.
York had hoped to open in early December but encountered complications during renovation that will push back the opening until at least mid-January, he said.
The full-service restaurant will be part of a Jacksonville, Florida-based chain that operates 31 restaurants, 28 of them in Florida. The chain is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
NOTE: The original version of this entry noted this Woody’s BBQ restaurant that will open soon in Beavercreek would be the first one in Ohio. Reader Kara Parente emailed (and also commented on this story) that her Springboro family owned a Dayton-area Woody’s franchise near the Dayton Mall from 1993-95 but couldn’t call it “Woody’s” because of the now-defunct Woody’s grocery store in West Carrollton, and instead named the restaurants “Jack’s BBQ.”
York said the Beavercreek Woody’s BBQ will seat 85 to 90 people and will employ 20 to 25 people. It will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
Woody’s menu includes Baby Back Ribs, Spare Ribs, Barbecue Chicken, Hot Wings, Cole Slaw and Banana Pudding. All side dishes are made in the restaurant, York said. Two smokers are being installed to smoke the meats, he said.
“It’s a good product, good southern barbecue, at a reasonable price,” York said.
York was born in Tennessee but has lived in the Dayton area since 1966. He and his wife Sharon will own and operate the Woody’s BBQ franchise restaurant.

Sonnys?? Wow, not bad, but some of you folks need to check out the non-chains in the South. I’m looking forward to trying out Woodys. A friend said there were several in Melbourne, FL and at one point they were quite good. Apparently the quality went down at the remaining one, but Brevard county has hard times worse than Dayton. I’m hopeful the new one in B’creek will be just fine; they seem to have put mucho effort in fixing up the site. Good luck!

used to live in the Daytona area -now in BVCK and Sonny’s was my favorite. Otherwise there was Dustin’s and Woody’s which are just as good. Glad to have some BBQ from the south… up north!

My husband and I travel quite a bit and get BBQ everywhere we go. I can’t believe that some of the best BBQ I have ever had is in dayton. Oinkadoodlemoo is really good. A small operation. Not a franchise that cuts corners to save a dime. Those guys love bbq and do it right. The meat is stand alone great, but the sauce is addictive. Be forewarned! One of my other faves is Sugars in Tenn. Super good. Don’t miss the grilled onions.

I agree with Nebraska Buckeye and Lisa, Corky’s is the best of any of the chain bbq joints. And man I wish one would come up here..it would kill! City BBQ isn’t bad either, but the best BBQ I have ever tasted besides my own, was at the San Antonio State Fair, my God…they can do up some pork and beef like nobody’s business.

You BBQ eaters are the worst tippers in the world. I saw 3 millionaires sitting at a table together in Beavercreek and not a one left a dime for the poor waitress. I gave her $10 and told her I guess thats how they got their millions by being stingy and greedy.

Ok I have grew up here in Dayton and have lived in Florida and Cincinnati. And I would have to agree Sonny’s is probably one of the best I have ever tasted. I use to work right across the street and was there almost everyday. I have also had Famous Dave’s when it was in Springdale until the closed that location. And I agree if they bought Sonny’s BBQ to the north everyone else would pack up too.

Piquasteve - That is too bad about Famous Dave’s. I love their bbq as well. I go to Minnesota twice a year and we always visit a Famous Dave’s while there. It is amazing. But the best bbq I have ever had is from Sonny’s in Corbin, KY. I cannot even put words to describe it. There is a new place in Englewood, Oinkadoodlemoo, as well. I have only been there once, but what I had was very good.

For Kara Palente Blalock: If it’s “incorrect”, it’s NOT a fact. Conversely, “facts” are NOT “incorrect”. Got that?

The Dayton Daily is reporting incorrect facts. The Parente Family of Springboro owned a Woody’s franchise and had to call it Jack’s BBQ due to Woody’s market in West Carrollton. Woody Mills (BBQ) tried to work with the grocery store Woody and his attorneys on the naming issue with no luck so they let it be named “Jack’s” the only one in a ten mile radius of the grocery. I was the manager. Woody & Yolanda Mills the owner of Woody’s have this franchise information. It is not the first in the state of Ohio. Good Luck to the new owners.

The Melbourne Woody’s may be gone, but there is still a Woody’s in Palm Bay and in Sebastian. And, I’m surprised that they are still in business. Most of us in the Melbourne area like Sonny’s.

Last time I visted Melbourne, Florida, I was sad to find out their Woody’s had closed. I always stopped for ribs, great baked beans and a bottle of their BBQ sauce to bring home to Dayton. Now I’ll have to ship to relatives in Florida. I can’t wait. It’s delicious.

The owner may have looked downtown, but came to the realization (as many others have) that Beavercreek is a much better place to locate….less crime, more money, more spending, more evening traffic.

Piquasteve - Your experience at Famous Dave’s must have been much better than mine. Brisket was dry, tough, and lacked any smoke flavor at all. The only way I can get good brisket it to make it myself in my pit (or the family in TX), or at Rudy’s at any of their TX locations. I have yet to see any BBQ place that can do all types of BBQ well in one location. Too bad. I enjoy all of it. Maybe I should take a BBQ road trip some day. Carolinas, Georgia, Memphis, St. Louis, KC, San Antonio…

Without the suburbs, Sandy, the city of Dayton wouldn’t evebn exit, let alone the downtown area you so cheerfully embelish. Shame on you, Sandy, for continuing to lie about others areas at the expense of the empty buildings downtown.

There’ already a BBQ joint downtown, Sandy. On Fifth St in the Oregon. I believe (BTW that’s I before E…) I think a business owner would want to locate where the money is. That’s NOT downtown Dayton on a Weds. nite.

If you’re ever traveling in Michigan, try Famous Dave’s BBQ. They also have a restaurant in Toledo and the Cedar Point area. The best Brisket I’ve ever tasted and I lived in Texas (the brisket experts) for 5 years. I e-mailed Famous Dave’s to urge them to open a restaurant in the Dayton area but got a reply that they are not planning on expanding to the Dayton area. I have been to Hickory River in Tipp City and it is very good and reasonably priced.

The Original Woody’s Bar-B-Q is in Jacksonville, FL. That is where Woody’s got their startin 1980. There has not been a Woody’s Bar-B-Q in Ohio before so everyone should give it a try! They have the best food quality for the price and the Baby Back Ribs are to die for!

I’m a retired Daytonian now living in central Florida. This is not the same Woody’s that has been around the area in the past. This is a regional chain from here in Florida. Guess they are moving North. Good food, reasonable price. The key to success will be the staff - not the food or price.

January? Looking forward to trying it as well as Oinkadoodlemoo. I have been to Hickory rivers in Tipp. If you’re north of Dayton you shouldn’t complain about not having chains. Tipp City has many great independents.

I wish them luck, but they might want to consider bringing in someone to “cleanse” that site. It’s jinxed and has been for years. Let’s hope they can make a go of it; the Creek isn’t known for keeping anything going in that space. Especially with City BBQ right down the road Creekers don’t like change.

There was a Woody’s BBQ that opereated at Mad River Station across from Dayton Mall in the early 90’s. It was called Jack’s BBQ because they couldn’t use the Woody’s name because of Woody’s in West Carrollton. I think it was open for less than 2 years.
