blog: New York Post’s Offensive Cartoon

The New York Post always goes for sensation, for outrage, for humor on its covers and more than not it hits mark.

But on page 12 of today’s paper, the cartoon by Sean Delonas is nothing but offensive.

Playing off the news of the day — the pet chimpanzee that had to be shot dead after it mauled the woman friend of its owner — the cartoon shows two cops, one with his gun drawn, standing over a dead chimp.

As the one cop looks down at the animal that’s lying in a pool of blood with three bullet holes in him and his tongue hanging out, he says:

“They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Rush Limbaugh saying he hopes President Barack Obama fails is one thing, but this is another.

The way I read it, it’s flat out racist.

View the cartoon for yourself.

Maybe they’ll try to say it means something else — that everyone interprets things differently — but the newspaper is already drawing protesters to its offices and it should.

This story will continue to grow as the day goes on.

I was on Yahoo this morning and they had a blurb about this issue. The more I read the more I realize that this was very racist (I am white btw) People like Wordell who blog here and espout their repugnican ignorance and bitterness to lossing the white house they have nothing but hate in their hearts. It is true that if the president fails we all fail. When we look at the white collar crooks of the world most are of republican background, they (the repugnicans) have destroyed this country the last eight years by tax breaking their rich buddies and screwing the middle class. We as a people (white people) lack the the experience of being truely discriminated against whereas African Americans still experience it to this day. The cartoonist HAD to know that this would draw fire but he and his editors decided to run it anyway. If it makes any sense Rupurt Murdoch owns the Post. He is very repugnican and he is not ashamed to admit it. He also owns Fox News, Very repugnican in their views. I was stationed in Germany in the mid 80’s and gained a new respect about discrimination because the Germans hated all Americans and I was discriminated against many times while stationed there. Wordell finds it funny to say he has lynched black people and raped black women, surely it was in sarcasm that he said this but he did nothing but compound the racial rift that exist. In one moment he is trying to be a professional and in the next he is showing just how out of touch he really is! The cartoon was offensive and it was in very poor judgment to run it. We can’t come together as a nation when we do these things so how bout we all just grow up and find more positive ways to move this country foreward.

Oh come on Judi!!!! We’re MUCH worse than you have described us!!!! I did enjoy the particular way you described your disgust with us. Knowing you have encountered “us”, I am relieved that your own self perception is on a much higher plane than your thoughts about us. Thank you for describing the people you have decided to live with. I am glad the superior attitude you project is beneficial to you. If not, you’d have to move away. We don’t want you to do that. We need you to remind us of our shortcomings. Thank you, Judi.

First I have to say that I was offended when I first saw the cartoon, but then I remembered that White people for the most part have more body hair than other ethnic groups, and monkeys are hairy, so it’s obvious now that the monkey isn’t Obama. Second I want to say to the poster who said they want a German History month and a German TV Network, you already have that. Your history month like anything from European based is every month in this country. And you have tons of TV channels. So stop your griping. And third, I just have to say, shame on all the the uneducated racists posting here who don’t know anything about history, so they just come here and spew off a bunch of nonsense. And lastly, to the posters who want Obama to fail, if he fails we all fail, you fail, the country fails. How ignorant to wish that he fails. Shame on you all who wish that. What you ought to be doing is happy that Bush is out of office so he can’t get us into any further bullcrap than we are in already.

This was a mediocre cartoon, but it sure is fun to see how quickly liberals like Arch jump at anything to feed their bizarre notion that conservatives are a bunch of racist rednecks. The original post from Chas is spot-on! Maybe a little review of how Justice Clarence Thomas has been portrayed by the liberal elites is in order here. Tell us Arch, which African-Americans are we supposed to treat with respect, and which ones are we allowed to make sport of? Why don’t you run it by Mike Peters? We will all get along better when race-baiting, elitist, PC snobbery becomes a thing of the past.

Let’s see…I believe I’m going to start my own German-Dutch-Swiss American (GDSA) History Month, & start up my own GDSA Entertainment Channel, & GDSA magazine. I think I’ll even create my own GDSA Holiday — I’ll call it “GDSAwansa.” But see, while I wasn’t born in any of those countries, they are part of me & my heritage. Yet, the minute that I start all of those things previously mentioned, I’m automatically categorized as a white-hooded robe wearing, a lynching rope carrying, looking for the nearest tall tree racist. For Pearls & others like her — Joe’s right. I believe the only thing that he may have omitted was that those who plunk down the race card are nothing but opportunists, i.e. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton.

There is a history of comparing blacks to monkeys. So while maybe they weren’t trying to be racist, they should have known people would make the connection. Everyone who is quick to dismiss this is obviously out of touch with what minority groups face. If your people don’t have words or stereotypes based on a history of hatred and degradation, then you really can’t understand what it’s like when these things come up. I think the paper knew they were dancing close enough to the line to cause a reaction, but far enough away to claim innocence.

The president does not write bills. Congress writes the bills. The cortoon says that congress had an Ape write the bill for it. That’s not Racist Q.E.D. We can’t have a national debate about the important issues if people are hyper-alert to racial slights. That’s an airball Arch.

This is another example of leftwingwackos crying wolf over the race issue. The cop says someone else will have to write the new stimulus bill. Obama did not write the stimulus bill, Congress did. Anyone without an axe to grind or a race card to play would understand the cartoon was ridiculing the wriers of that crappy bill…Congress. Any monkey could come up with a bill that bad. The problem with the left pulling out the race card so often draws focus away from real issues of racism, like the kid who got shot by a policeman in Houston.

Remember: Nat Turner “Two” has informed us that not only does racism exist…(Oh God!!!!I love the sound of jackboots on the pavement just outside of African-American’s homes!!!!!!), but it is now “subliminal”. With that statement, I suppose that “it”…Racism) will never end, (actually, Nazi’s, White power a*s holes ect. will continue it…not normal people)) we are forever condemned to be at each other’s throats…physically/socially/in our racial opinions/relations. Nate, if you want to continue it, for reasons of revenge…or retribution…GAME ON!!!! I actually own slaves now, strung a few up on the old oak tree just off the driveway, and raped and pillaged a few of the good lookin’ black women after the hangings. Hey..it’s inbred…and I can’t change!!!! Nothing has changed according to Nat Turner “Two”…so why should we Honky/Cracker’s try to show that it has? The Civil Rights Act of 1964 did “nothing”, right??!! It takes time to change, find truth, accept the “possibilities”. Let’s see, a small summation: Colin Powell…Chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff…basically the most powerful military man in the world……Condelizza (sp) Rice, Secretary Of State of the most powerful nation on our planet. Barack Obama…African American…the most powerful man on the planet….but to you, you idiot….it’s all “subliminal”. Nate? How lost can you get before immediate gratification rights it all? At what price will you be at peace?

There have been recent studies done on college students vs. monkeys. The both faird the same in bais math & coordination skills. The cartoon is simply saying a monkey could have written this stimulus package. It has nothing to do with the President as he did not write it. A team of people wrote it. I suppose that since the police officers are not of color that makes this a racist cartoon assumed to be an attack on blacks?!?!

Our institutions are failing at a rapid rate and now the cartoonist Sean Delonas has revealed that he and the N.Y. post are morally bankrupt. This political cartoon is similar to the kind of hatred that historians can cite in the newspapers of Hitler’s Germany. Sean Delonas depicts the author of the Stimulus Bill (the one that the President of the United States has put his pen to) as being one and the same as the monkey recently executed under the dubious righteousness dealt out by one officers smoking gun, in the cartoon another officer stands behind the first, who announces the political realities of his actions are that the monkey can’t pass anymore legislation because the monkey has just died a violent death. This is a clear image of a disturbed mind. Yes, the text does secure the connection, and yes, if you grew up in the South, you would know that if you drew that cartoon the United States Secret Service would soon be offering you some free housing and psychological testing.

To Joe specifically, but to others also who share his views, I am astounded. The cartoon is offensive to the lady who was attacked and her family, the owner of the chimp and her family, and to black people. I think it is obvious why the first two would be offended, but in case you were unaware, calling black monkeys and porch-monkeys is a racial slur. It’s not a matter of reading more into something, it is a matter of fact. This is not a Liberal or Conservative issue. It seems since Pres. Obama won ‘conservatives’ on every blog about him are getting more and more hate filled. I could not care less about political cartoons degrading Pres. Obama’s abilities to lead the country and make a positive difference. That sparks conversation. If you can’t see the racism in this cartoon you probably have not been called the ‘n’-word to your face. How’s about that, Joe?

AndreaM: Racism: “The belief that one race is genetically superior to another; and the perceived superior race has the right to dominate the perceived genetically inferior race.” Does this help you out in your quest to use one of your “hateful” (Dear God…now they’ve got me doing it!!) buzz words to invoke your liberal totalitarian agenda? Your use of the word “racism” infers that anyone who does not agree with a person of color, no matter if the subject in discussion has nothing to do with race, is a Nazi. Nazi’s are true racists. Me? I might disagree with someone, and that person might be (not always) a person of color. Andrea, I would comment that in my opinion, the cartoon is bigoted at worse, and, at best, marginally funny, really related to the chimpanzee going nuts. READ THIS NEXT: The ones who signed the “stimulus” bill are nuts, they acted out of contol as the chimpanzee did. Your “agenda” of outrage and disgust is really dated/old/”time out corner” nonsense. I believe you’re a typical “molehill to a mountain” agitator. You’re free to comment. Your opinion is valued. Try not to take addressing political satire so personally. Calm down, full moons affect me too.

What I got from the cartoon; 1) the stimulus bill was written by a diseased (rabid) monkey, 2) someone shot the monkey, 3) congress is going to need a new bill wrighter. Since when Obama was in congress all he did was vote “yes” on tax increases and “present” on everything else it is difficult to see how anyone could confuse him with this monkey.

At the same time, when we do blame the Liberals we’ll be the racists, the troublemakers, the insensitve, the whatever adjective (is that too big of a word for Liberals?) they want to use. I don’t know if the cartoonist meant it to be racist or not. Regardless, the editors at the Post whould have spent few moments thinking about how it may be construed negatively, and not run it. It was a bad choice. People can choose personally whether or not to read the Post after they have seen it. I think making this into a big Liberal/Conservative debate is counterproductive, and just fuels animosity.

AndreaM, Seriously?? WOW. What’s life like in your little liberal universe? How dare you assume to know the intentions of the artist of that cartoon. Firstly, Obama did NOT write the bill. The man has never written a bill in his life, as his single 2-year stint in office as senator proved. Secondly, you show your own biases when you presume that a chimpanzee in a political cartoon automatically represents the president. Let me ask you a question. Why did YOU assume the chimpanzee represented Obama? Are you covering your own shame of latent prejudice? Or are you truly that uninformed about our government and the way things work?? Get over it. It is a political commentary covered by the first amendment and I say Its about time!

My letter to the NY Post: To whom it may concern: I am writing to express the utmost outrage and disgust at the cartoon published today in your newspaper. I have never been much of a reader of the New York Post, but now I have have an excuse never to pick up this paper. The recent events of the chimpanzee attacking and almost killing a woman was not funny at all. The recent success of President Obama, although struggling through politics as usual to pass the economic stimulus package was not funny either. It is sickening to see that the NY Post, a paper read by millions of people of color, would blatantly allow a “cartoonist” to marginalize the success of the first Black President of the United States. The FIRST President & family with any COMPETENCE and COMPASSION in a very long time. The SAME President who’s stimulus package will be of benefit to the paper itself and it’s thousands of employees and millions of readers. I wouldn’t dare say that the NY Post would be so SHAMEFUL as to compare President Obama to a chimpanzee or a monkey. There is no excuse as to say, “I didn’t know.” The NY Post and all of the editors must have some level of understanding the prejudices of the past and the present. Nevertheless, I am never surprised at the level of ignorance and racism displayed by the media here in America. I am disgusted with the NY Post and have made sure to forward this reprehensible cartoon to my entire email list. My hopes is that they will forward the message to as many readers and non-readers of the NY Post as possible. Furthermore, simply as a business decision for the NY Post, a paper that could become unprofitable in the years to come due to competition, quality and need, one would think that the NY Post would do everything it could to keep it’s loyal readers and/or encourage new readers. To all my friends and family on this list. Do NOT keep quiet when you see or hear racist comments. Let people know it’s time to stop! Good Luck,

The cartoon wouldn’t have been as topical and as funny of the police were shooting mounds of fertilizer representing the 300 plus lumps that passed this fiasco.

Until you mentioned it the idea the cartoonist might be referencing Pres. B. O. didn’t occur to me. With all the cartoons printed in this very paper comparing Pres. GW Bush to a chimp, I don’t know how you can make the connection. I would however say it shows your politics to be pro-Obama. The drawing doesn’t look like Pres. B. O. and frankly, if you see a black man in that picture, you are the biased person. I’m not sure what your usual subject matter is (sports) but maybe you should go back to that.

Such hypocrisy being displayed! Over the years, I frequently referred to George W. Bush as, “that chimpanzee in the Oval Office.” Doubtful any would disagree Bush is about as smart as a chimpanzee. Today, I cannot refer to Obama as “that chimpanzee in the Oval Office.” I cannot do this because anal retentive people will jump up and down, tug at their hair, screech and behave like wild chimpanzees while hollering, “Racist!” Most comical is I am a red skinned woman, a member of a minority peoples who suffered the worst genocide of written history, suffered the greatest racism of written history, yet I have to measure my words for fear of being labeled racist. Today, I am censored, my Freedom of Speech is limited, at best I might be allowed to refer to Obama as a blithering idiot. This Obama claim of “America has moved past racism” is clearly the words of a blithering idiot whose thinking, behavior and actions are not too unlike that of a deranged chimpanzee, much as is George W. Bush. I don’t do diapers and I don’t do racist guilt trips. Enough, already. Okpulot Taha Choctaw Nation

OOOOHHHHH!!!!! We’re touchy now aren’t we! Liberals can’t fathom much of anything if it doesn’t fit the sacrosant “feely” dogma they consume themselves in. The rest of us are “mean & hateful” if we don’t goose step or march verbally & politically in unison in front of their politically correct and freedom damaging Politburo. Can’t see the irony in this cartoon? A little “back at cha” has you apoplectic and in a near catatonic rage? Good! Welcome to the Republic that gaurantees your right to be offended! Continue to comment and complain!! Debate each other!! That’s why we’re still able to disagree!!>>>Freedom of expression…DUH!! Question: You Libs want The Fairness Doctrine on Radio/TV re-enacted. ( Amazing, since you control every media outlet except Fox). Why then are you asking that some should be banished from commenting on this site? Your double standard is showing through!!…always is, but some won’t take you to task for it, and if they do, again, it’s mean/divisive/hateful. If you can’t win the arguement, name calling shows how lost, intelectually & politically, you are.

Tom, how can you first explain the non-racial context of the cartoon — a parody of the news of the day, then go on to say “The way I read it, its flat out racist”?

If Obama had written the bill, then I could see where this might be racist. The danger is that we are so politically correct that we can’t use certain words or images for one group that you would use for another. I remember when Howard Cosell said “watch that monkey run” and everyone went nuts. I was watching the game and the guy was weaving in and out around defenders, much like a monkey swinging from tree to tree. I was thinking it before Cosell said it. It had nothing to do with the player’s race any more than calling a running back who pushes a pile of defenders a “bull” has anything to do with race. We really should lighten up!

Using a tragic event such as this to make a political statement is just wrong. A woman was very seriously injured, and the monkey lost his life. I don’t see how any of this can be made to look humorous.

Everybody was talking about it at the DDN water cooler this morning, but they all had other (comparatively less trite) stories to write? Was that how this story came to be? It’s only by a series of misinformed assumptions that someone could call this racist. Are we now to the point where anyone that has anything negative to say about anything that can possibly be construed to be negative about Black Americans is now racism? It’s a sad state of affairs.

I don’t see it as racist, but I do see it as stupid. It just isn’t funny, and the reference to the stimulous really makes no sense. I do agree that any jokes about shooting the president are pretty tastless.

Poor deprived, confused, unhappy confined, used and tired chimp, finally took his fate into his own hands, now out of his misery, no longer forced to satisfy Man’s silly entertainment needs and his desire for the dollar. That’s the real political message …

Arch, I agree with everyone stick to sports. It clearly implies that the so called “stimulus bill” is so bad that it must have been written by a dumb animal such as a monkey. What’s your next opinion, the Geico cavemen commercials are directed toward Pelosi and Reid and should be pulled?

If you look at a chimpanzee and see a black person — or a mixed-race person, in the President’s case — it is you who are the racist, sir. If you really thought it was about the POTUS, you’d be outraged they’d talk about shooting him. Excuse me if I don’t rush to support Al Sharpton, who encouraged the murder of Korean grocers (Remember Freddy’s Fashion Mart?) and “white interlopers.” I thought going nuts over cartoons was strictly the realm of lunatic Muslim extremists.

Arch, are you suggesting black people are comparable to chimpanzees? Clearly, you do not even understand the racist background from which you obviously aspire. Chimpanzees are the intelligent, well-thumbed, tool-using members of a community, though often silly and simple, yes; apes are the dumbed down and often quick-to-violence ogres, hence the phrase, “Going Ape.” And for the record, the president is not African-American, he is black. Equal. Black. American. Calling our black brethren African-American only encourages the idea that they should be separated in our minds.

Though I do not believe for a minute the cartoonist meant the chimp to represent BHO, the cartoon would have faired better if the cop said “President Obama will have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Pelosi and Reid wrote the stimulus bill. I doubt Obama even knows what is in it. I think having chimps in zoos is racist along with Kroger being racist for selling watermelons.

personifying a monkey as a white person is one thing, given our country’s history of racism personifying an african american as a monkey puts it into an entirely different context.

Only those that thrive on racism fearmongering see this as racist. It is simply to compare that the stimulus bill was so poorly written that a monkey could have done it. Anything can be twisted. This was just political humor and rather funny. Though based on a tragedy, many tasteless jokes immediately follow tragedy.

Doesn’t it seem like calling it racist is a bit of a stretch? I mean, it just seems like he’s implying that the stimulus package was poorly written, doesn’t it? I guess sports writers need something to feel liberal about now and then, too.

I think the cartoon is in bad taste, but it’s not new in the realm of comics nor should there be an outrage over it. Where was the outrage over this offensive cartoon by the Rolling Stone attacking John McCain? http://digg.com/politics/NoMediaOutrageOverOffensiveRollingStoneMcCainCartoon I also think that you can’t tie the portrayal of a monkey to a racism. Even George W. Bush was repeatedly portrayed as a monkey: http://www.goodbyecuriousgeorge.com/ The connotation is that monkeys are simple creatures. In both cases I think the monkey portrayal is used to poke fun at the subject’s intelligence, not their race. This ‘outrage’ does have the air of double-standard when comparing the cartoon with other outrageous cartoons in the political spectrum.

Tom, Stick to sports not political cartoons you find offensive. Maybe you should look at Mike Peters and other liberal newspaper cartoons over the last 8 years and see how offensive they were to republicans, Condi Rice and especially George Bush. You probably had no problem reading them and getting a chuckle.

I agree with Chas and Patrick. What is good for the goose. etc… President Bush who withstood 911 in his first year in office was treated horribly by the press, including the DDN. It seems to go with the office these days, although now that a liberal is in office, we will always hear how terrible the critics are instead of the other way around…

Where where all those protesters when negative cartoons and deflmatory remarks were made about Secretary Rice and General Powell. As a Conservative Black American I see a double standard applied if you are a liberal. Even Jackson and Sharpton made negative degrading remarks that were almost ignored by the media. Obama wanted the job now accept the criticism that comes along with it.
