UD and WSU Hoops — angst and feeling mighty good
While all the hoops buzz around town the past week or so was about the Dayton Flyers — and rightfully so with that No. 18 ranking as they headed down to San Juan for three games — I’ve got to say Brad Brownell has quietly built himself quite a team this season at Wright State.
You saw signs of that Tuesday night as WSU toyed with Central Michigan before finally pushing the Chippewas aside, 69-53, at the Nutter Center.
This is as good of a Raiders team as I’ve seen around here in a long time. Although there’s no DaShaun Wood, I’d say it is better than the Raiders team who surprised everyone and made the 2007 NCAA Tournament:
Senior forward Todd Brown looks like a man on the court for the Raiders this season. He’s playing with a real confidence now, his outside shot is on the mark — he was 4 for 6 from three-point range Tuesday — and he’ll only get better with the return of Vaughn Duggins.
The junior guard — who had been out of the WSU line-up for a year — returned Tuesday with a 21-point, 5-assist., shut-down defensive effort.
Duggins being on the floor lifts the games of all his teammates.
The 3-1 Raiders are deep this year and they’re playing a stifling defense.
While there is some angst around Flyerland now after a pair of losses to good teams — No. 5 Villanova and Kansas State — the resultant fall from the Top 25 and the prospect that it will be a struggle to return to such lofty status during the next month while playing several teams with little juice when it comes to swaying pollsters, Wright State fans have to be feeling mighty good about their bunch right now.
Once the Flyers get into their A-10 schedule, I think they will acquit themselves quite well again and have a good chance to be every bit that NCAA Tournament team everyone predicted they would be just a week ago.
Even though Butler is figured to be the scourge of the Horizon League this season, don’t discount Wright State. All you need to do is beat the Bulldogs once in the league tournament and the under-manned Raiders nearly did that last season. This team is good enough to finish the task.
If things go as I think they might for both UD and WSU this season, it could be fun around here come mid March.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If WSU keeps up at Brownell’s level (and he stays as the coach), I wouldn’t be surprised to see the UD-WSU series restart. WSU is three years of sub-100 RPI. That makes for a fair home-home game with UD..and WSU will have earned the statistical respect it needed to make the game possible again. Recent RPI (last 10 yrs) UD (27, 33, 75, 182, 119, 43, 20, 54, 64, 50) WSU (93, 86, 72, 179, 173, 171, 238, 130, 122, 225)

Love how 90 percent of the UD fans that commented on this blog either put Wright State down or tried to pin UD up. I dont want to be anything like a UD collar popper, Wright State will be what it has been for the past 4 years a VERY good Mid-Major Program that is one of the best kept secrets around. Ive always said UD is the more flashy team great individual talent,…but Wright State is the more well rounded team. Ud needs to not be greedy and stop thinking about the pay check and play a home and home with WSU. settle this little spat on the floor.

Look at the number of comments and the smack talk produced just from this article. Being from out of town I have no dog in this fight, but I think you need to direct this passion towards the UD athletic director, who apparently, is out of touch with reality or has very inflated opinion of himself. How can there not be a UD /WSU game every year??????

The age old discussion about why UD refuses to schedule WSU in basketball really misses the point. If UD was in fact such a premier hoop program as they claim to be, they would not be afraid to take on all comers, anywhere, anytime. They obviously aren’t such a program. A second observation. The average age of the so-called “Flyer Faithful” membership rolls must be at least 65 years old. The crowd scenes broadcast during the recent Puerto Rican Tourney looked like they unloaded a bus filled with residents from the local retirement village and handed out UD Flyer hats and tee shirts! Where is the current younger generation of UD fans? Probably all over at the Nutter Center cheering the WSU basketball team! Go Raiders Baby!

First off, when I go to a WSU game, I see 5000-6000 (I have season tickets). That is better than 230 other D-1 teams in the country. Second, and this goes for most WSU fans, we don’t sit around “aspiring to be UD” like the Thrill puts it—-paying $35K a year to go to UD is ludicrous. Also, if you asked Brownell, he could probably care less about UD. The bottom line is come Feb., both teams will probably have a similar record with the same number of quality wins. UD fans will still whine about their coach because their delusional, WSU fans will be satisfied but worried Brownell will be leaving (like every year).

Calm down, y’all. There is room for two great Division I programs in Dayton, so let’s celebrate that and turn it into another Crosstown Shoot-Out (minus the Skyline Chili— that stuff gives me the runs!). UD and WSU are both in very good D-I hoop conferences. We all know there is enough high school talent in the Miami Valley for two “mid-majors.” When Brownell and Gregory figure this out (and seemingly they are slowly but surely catching on), and they seriously go after signing all of the great local talent, everyone in America is going to realize that Dayton, Ohio is one of the country’s basketball Meccas. And fans in the Gem City, regardless of college affiliation, will realize it’s “win-win” for all if we have UD-WSU annually and pack the Nutter Center or UD Arena for the “Mayor’s Cup”.

This again?? UD is good and we all know that. What I wish some of my UD friends would realize is that there is a viable opponent across town. That WSU team lost to 14th ranked Washington by 5,on their homecourt, without both of WSU’s starting guards. That would be a tough task even for our Flyers. We are spoiled at UD and its great that we have the attendance that we do but that isnt the determining factor on the talent of a team. I really wish this game would be played somewhere other than a message board. Go FLyers, Good luck Raiders.

The Raiders have a chance to get in the top 25 if they win all the way through and beat Mississippi St. at Miss. They should win @ Miami pretty easily this year. Sam Houston State will be a good challenge for them to be ranked as well. Flyer people don’t know who Sam Houston State is either probably.

The bearcats of cincinnati would destroy both teams….but I would go with WSU over UD without hesitation. Great work Brownell

Well I see the Flyer faithful is patting itself on the back again. I love the comments like “We draw more people to the game” “UD is a top program.” Blah blah blah. UD fans are simply the biggest egomaniacs and over value their team. The are too scared to play WSU. UD was good….. in the 50’s. What about all those NITs. Loser mentality, losing fans, losing program. I remember a guy telling me UD was better than Kansas…. KU ends up winning it all then beat UD the next year. Go figure, typical ego UD fan.

WSU just stole a PG away from Michigan State red, wow. And you’re so narcissistic to believe everyone wants to go see UD but can’t get seats? I went to a UD game 2 years ago to see old WSU coach Paul Biancardi and for the mere fact i was clapping when Saint Louis scored I was yelled at and ridiculed. And this was in the last row at UD Arena! I only step foot in that arena for high school games.

UD and WSU are not in the same league. UD has extensive history at the D1 level. Dayton has long been a UD town. WSU is aspiring to be on the same level of UD (top 25, top 35, doesn’t matter) and it will take some time. WSU has been on the road of establishing itself since it went D1. Brownell is an outstanding coach and had done a great job building a program. UD is trying to regain the levels of success it has enjoyed historically and that the Flyer fanatics expect. WSU is carving their own path. The two teams should play each other every year. It not about being afraid … it’s about bringing together the city and getting people excited about both universities and more importantly, the ‘game’ of basketball.

Man, UD fans are like a broken record. Thank god they have that top 25 attendance thing going or they wouldn’t have much to brag about. It’s good to see all that pre-season hype and ranking lasted about 8 days into the season

I’ve never understood the whole “Nobody goes to see WSU play” argument. WSU draws in the top 1/3 nationally which is pretty damn good for a program which has only been D-1 since the late 80’s. UD’s attendance is at the elite level. How can you expect every team in the nation to draw 12,000?

They have a combined 1 tournament win since 1991 so honestly they both need to shut up and play ball. Valpo has 2 wins (sweet 16), Southern Illinois has 3-4 wins, Butler has like 6 wins, Xavier has around 10 in that span. Shut up and play ball

What do you think is just a typical UD homer. The same people that look down on other people who tell them they graduated from WSU instead of UD. I think its great both teams are having early success. Recruiting for both is difficult and they still hang with big time teams. WSU did play No. 13 Washington on the West Coast w/o Duggins and was in the game for 40 minutes. So they have played a legitimate team in those 4 games.

Tom, from what I can see, Coach Brownell is not just building a team; he is building a program. It looks like great things are in store for the Raiders and for every basketball fan in this part of Ohio.

Steve, I see that WSU is not playing Sinclair Community School. Does that mean WSU is scared of them?

Professor, are those 4 schools even D-1? Oh well, at least it is a good payday for their awesome budgets. 6-2 after those 4 blowouts at “Homer” Arena. Flyer fans will be begging for a Top 25 ranking again.

So let me get this straight, you’ve determined that WSU has a great team based on wins against Portland St., Belmont, and Central Michigan. Yet, UD will get little recognition anytime soon playing teams with “little juice?” Looks like your using different standards.

There is no better time than the present to end this nonsense and forget about strength of schedule and RPI Ratings and have Dayton and Wright State play each other on the court. Both schools need to quit making excuses and make this happen.

Professor Basketball, do you teach at WSU? Hype? Good grief, more complaining from WSU fans. UD outdraws WSU 5-1 and has a much bigger following and they are a more successful program. Hence, more coverage to please the subscribers. The paper’s not stupid, they cover what their website, research, and common sense tells them to do. BTW, Central Michigan is not in the Big Ten, they are in the MAC and they are hardly a powerhouse themselves. People shouldn’t post after they’ve been drinking.

“Ive got to say Brad Brownell has quietly built himself quite a team this season at Wright State.” The operative word in this quote is “quietly”.The DDN sports staff has, as ususal, been focused on the hype elsewhere in town. Example: the top 25 ranking will last for a considerable number of weeks—-a prediction made prior to the two unfortunate tournament losses in Puerto Rico. Thank goodness we can count on the likes of Towson, Leigh, Presbyterian, and Appalachian State to makes things right again.
