Two Uncorked readers need your help

Usually, Uncorked acts as a wine blog, in which some schmuck who looks a lot like the guy holding the wine glasses up there on the right delivers an opinion about something wine-related and readers are free to comment.

But once in a while, this page becomes a bulletin board of sorts, where readers can post queries and get advice or help from the community of folks who read these pages (that’s you!).

First up is Cathy, chair of the local chapter of the American Wine Society, who writes:

The Dayton Chapter of the American Wine Society is in need of new wine glasses, probably around 200 or so. Being the non-profit organization that we are, we don’t want to spend any more than necessary. Where do restaurants get their wine glasses? Do you have any ideas that could help us?

And second we have Elizabeth, who works as a marketing intern for a Dayton-based custom-made book company called The Book Factory (she also works weekends at Market Wine down at the Second Street Market), who writes:

My current project is to research wine journals/logs. This includes what customers look for when recording their favorite wines and how the journals may be set up. Since this is a completely new project for the company, we are open to any insight wine lovers may have for the journals. As of right now, I have thoughts on creating a pocket-size wine journal. Some categories I thought about adding to the journal are: wine name, country of origin, producer, taste, wine best served with, price and overall consumer rating. If we could get some wine lover’s insight on a product like this so I could come up with a prototype, that would be fantastic! If you may have any suggestions for me, or perhaps know a few contacts that I could reach, I would appreciate any information.

Can anybody help Cathy or Elizabeth by posting a comment with advice or suggestions?

Thanks and cheers!

Cathy: re your glass question Ohio wines has a wonderful relationship with 2 suppliers of glass — for a nice libby 8.5 ‘glass’ glass — from Arton in northern virginia — we purchase 20-30,000 plus annually for our festivals — and perhaps can help by making a connection with them — we have priced this style of glass/glass everywhere and have been working with the arton folks for over 10 years — with considerable satisfaction — we have never been able to find a better price — and we have been able to pass considerable savings on to others in the state for incredibly beautiful Schott Zwiesel glass, we have a wonderful relationship with our wine trails — we use their their Forte series — but there are lots other styles available — these are titanium-crystal and while appear to be very fragile, are really quite durable if anyone is interested in the SZ glass, we’d be pleased to pass on our contact who has been teriffic to work with for more than 2 years now

Elizabeth: My sister gave me just such a book as a Christmas present a couple of years ago. The categories you listed as being of interest were there. Also, if I remember correctly, there was a plastic holder slot for each entry which could hold a business card, a small photo, part of a bottle’s label, etc. to enhance the memories of the wine or of a visit to the winery. Sorry, but I can’t remember the publisher of the taster’s notes text, nor do I know where she purchased it. However, I know that these types of notebooks for wine already exist and are out on the general American market.

Cathy: I used to work at Jay’s Seafood Restaurant in downtown Dayton. The person who currently runs the wine tastings there, Mr. Joe Daniels, would probably be able to tell you where Jay’s gets their glasses. Just call 222-2892 and ask for him. He usually works Tuesday through Thursday from about 1:00 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m. It is probably best to call him around 4:00 p.m., before the dinner hour starts at 5:00 p.m.

Cathy, there is a restaurant supply store North Main just before the interstate on the left side. When you see Harmon Cadillac on the right, it’s just a block further North They even have a “moving” sale because they have to vacate for work on the interstate
