Ferrante snags two more double-golds as Ohio wines continue to impress
The results are POSTED, and Ohio wines are continuing their recent streak of impressive results. This time the news comes from Tasters Guild International and its 2007 wine competition results.
This time, it was Ferrante Vineyards that brought home the heavy hardware: two double golds, for Ferrante’s 2006 Vidal Blanc and for its 2005 Signanture Series Chardonnay. The grapes for both wines are grown at or near Ferrante’s winery in northeast Ohio. And — this is significant — both are among the wines Ferrante intends to pour at the National City Ohio Wine Fest to be held June 1-2 at the Second Street Market in good ol’ downtown Dayton.
That’s good news, because sometimes, Ohio’s award-winning wines are not made in sufficient quantities to pour in festival settings, and those who get their first tastes of Ohio wines at such festivals can walk away without a full appreciation of Ohio’s wine-producing potential.
But Nick Ferrante, the winery’s winemaker, said the two double-gold-winning wines are among the five destined for the tasting bar in Dayton, and the other three are no slouches either: A Riesling Signature Series 2005, Cabernet Franc Signature Series 2005, and the luscious dessert-in-a-glass Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.
Other Ohio wineries captured gold, silver and bronze medals at the Tasters Guild tasting, and some of Ferrante’s other wines also earned similar honors.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Carmel Ferrante, whose family operates the winery, said of the double-golds: “This is really good for Ohio. These types of awards are so prestigious, and having something like this helps to educate Ohioans as well as people from surrounding states about the high quality wines that Ohio can produce.”
Well said. But don’t take Carmel’s word for it — or mine, for that matter. Come down to the Ohio Wine Fest June 1-2 and let your own taste buds decide.
Cheers!
