DAYTON — Dayton’s first on-street bike lanes were installed Monday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday along a seven-block stretch of Jefferson Street in the downtown.

The bike lanes are part of the city’s project to convert several one-way streets to two-way, and to install bike routes going north-south and east-west through downtown.

Most of the conversion project won’t be done until next spring, said Joe Weinel, a senior engineer with the city’s public works department. “We won’t be far enough along on the project to repave this year,” Weinel said.

But the state of Ohio was working on a separate “urban paving” project, in which they repave state routes that run inside city limits, he said. Jefferson and Ludlow streets are designated as Ohio 48 through downtown.

“They were doing Jefferson, and they agreed to do the bike lanes when they striped Jefferson,” he said.

Even though it’s just the first piece of the conversion, Weinel said the installed lane was a big deal. When it’s all done, he said, the city will likely do a formal unveiling.
