Boating safety course scheduled in Greene County

Greene County Parks & Trails and the Dayton Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will offer a five-part America’s Boating Course from 7 to 9 p.m., March 26, April 2, April 16 and April 23, at the Greene County Media Room, 541 Ledbetter Road, Xenia.

As required by law: Persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, who operate a boat powered by greater than 10 horsepower must successfully pass an approved boating education course or proficiency exam.

Greene County staff naturalist and certified watercraft instructor Ashlee Schmitt will assist with the training.

Classes will include boat terms and types, required safety equipment, navigation rules, aids to navigation, lights and sound signals, government regulations, anchoring, adverse conditions and emergencies, communications afloat, water sports safety, trailering and personal watercraft operation.

The five-part session will end with a 50-question examination plus 10 state-specific questions.

GPS explained

This month’s Sportsman’s Seminar Series will feature pointers by members of the United States Power Squadron for people using a GPS unit. The session is planned for 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Greene County Media Room, 541 Ledbetter Road, Xenia.

Boating classes

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary has three safe boating courses planned in the near future. They begin on the following dates:

• Jan. 31 at Fairmont High School. Call David Friedman at (937) 293-4131 to sign up or for more information.

Adventure Summit set

Five Rivers MetroParks and Wright State University will present the biennial Adventure Summit on Feb. 10 and 11 at the Wright State Student Union.

Admission and parking are free. Included will be inspirational speakers, hands-on activities including kayaking and a climbing wall, and competitions in running and biking.

There will also be an expo with multiple vendors, outfitters, resorts and organizations.
