Dayton has had a boat show for many years, but attendance has been slipping. Dayton had one outdoors show a couple years ago, but last year it fell apart and never happened.
The latest in the saga of Dayton shows: The Dayton Boat & Sports Show, set for Jan. 6-8, 2012, at the Airport Expo Center.
Rob Lynch and Jason Mayer of Odyssey Events, promoters for the Dayton Boat Show the past several years, have canceled the regular boat show in February and picked up the early January date for a combined boat and outdoors show.
“Inland boat shows have been slowly going away,” Mayer said. “People have told us they come to a boat show and there isn’t much to do. You walk around, look at boats and then you leave.
“This way people will stay longer because it will include fishing and hunting and plenty of things for families to do.”
Although it’s early, about six months before the show, Odyssey has lined up several hands-on attractions, including a zipline and archery range. They hope to have a climbing wall, kayak demonstrations and rides, and seminars for hunting and fishing — even mushroom hunting and a kids bluegill fishing pond.
Mayer said there would be at least 100 boats of all shapes and sizes, RVs, ATVs, canoes, kayaks and jet skis.
He also is in the process of lining up plenty of fishing tackle, hunting and boating supplies, charter boats and travel destinations. They hope to have an agreement with a keynote speaker soon.
For more information about the show, call Mayer at (941) 735-4383.
Downtown Dayton fishing tourney
Anglers can begin making plans to fish in the Downtown Dayton Fishing Tournament on July 23 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by Fisherman’s Headquarters and We Care Arts and organized by the Dumb Bassers Club and the All Ohio Police Fishing Tournament Committee.
The entry fee is $15 unless you have an original receipt from Fisherman’s Headquarters for at least $10. Then your fee is $10. Youth fees are $5 for those under 16 years of age.
All fishing will be from the banks of the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton from the low dam at the old Tait Station (just east of Broadway Street), north to the area just east of Main Street where the Stillwater and Mad rivers join the Great Miami.
All state fishing regulations must be observed.
Feed Dayton will be on site to take any carp that are caught. They will be used to make organic fertilizer for growing more food for the hungry.
Registration forms and information can be found at feeddayton.org. They should be filled out and sent in with fees prior to the tournament. Fisherman’s HQ also has registration forms and you can pay your entry fee there. Anyone signing up on the day of the tournament will pay $2 higher fees.
St. Marys team finishes second
The St. Marys team of Deb and Dave Gregory finished second in the amateur division last weekend in the Crappie USA qualifying event on Indiana’s Mississinewa and Salamonie lakes.
Their total catch was 6.19 pounds, good for a $500 prize. The used Southern Pro jigs tipped with large shiners slow-trolled in 19-to-20 feet of water.
