Ron Profitt knew he would be close.
The top bowler on the Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association senior all-star team also had his sights set on the men’s city all-star first team. The 58-year-old Brookville resident, however, had to settle for the top spot on the second team, falling shy by seven points.
“It was one shot – I left an open,” Profitt said. “I had a split in the 10th frame, third game, in the city tournament. If I would have spared in the 10th, I would have won all-events and had the points. But I made a bad shot.”
Profitt finished second in all-events but he was first on the senior all-star team, which takes into account tournament finishes, honor scores and averages.
“Sure, you feel better about being on the city all-star team but the seniors team is definitely an accomplishment,” Profitt said. “There are a lot of great senior bowlers in the city, it’s hard to be in the top five.”
Profitt is frequently in the top five. It is the fourth time in the past five seasons that he has made the senior all-star team. He has also qualified to the city men’s all-star team, either on the first or second team, four times since the 2004-05 season. Like Profitt, several of the city all-stars are seniors, 50 and older, including Dave Flemming and Bill Peters.
While his open 10th frame still nags at him, Profitt had a solid showing in the city seniors tournament with second-place finishes in singles and all-events and a top 5 finish in doubles. Consistency was the name of the game for the Brookville bowler who averaged more than 230 in three different leagues last season – 236 at Aero, 233 at Capri and 233 in the traveling league.
But Profitt’s success extends well beyond Dayton. He has advanced to the match-play finals in his past two PBA Senior Tour events, finishing fourth in the PBA Senior Lake County Indiana Open on Aug. 12. He edged top-seeded Tom Baker in match play in Indiana.
Profitt has cashed in five of the eight national tournaments he has competed in this season.
“I had some good games when I needed to,” he said.
Profitt is hopeful that the good games continue today when he opens play at the PBA Senior Jackson Open in Michigan.
