Seventeen new state wildlife officers, including four from the Miami Valley, have graduated from training and were recently sworn as peace officers by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The four officers and their assignments are:
• John T. Coffman, 22, Waynesville — officer at-large in northeast Ohio.
• Jason W. Keller, 22, New Bremen — officer at-large in southwest Ohio.
• Eric S. Lamb, 33, Wilmington — officer at-large in southwest Ohio.
• Adam M. Smith, 25, Lewistown — officer assigned to Logan County.
Also assigned to southwest Ohio is Cody A. Klima, 22, Ottawa. The new officers were among a pool of more than 500 applicants.
National trappers to meet in Lima
The National Trappers Association will celebrate its 50-year anniversary by holding its annual convention at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima.
The convention, which is open to the public, begins Thursday, July 30, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 2. Admission is $10 for the entire event. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. Camping is available for $25 per day with electric and water hookups, or $10 per day for primitive.

CRP workshop in Darke County
A Conservation Reserve Program workshop is scheduled for Aug. 8 at Adams Township House, 100 Park St., Gettysburg.
It will be geared toward landowners from Auglaize, Darke, Mercer, Miami and Shelby counties who are enrolled in conservation programs. It’s free, open to the public and includes lunch.
Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To reserve a spot, call the Darke SWCD office in Greenville at (937) 548-1715, ext. 3. The deadline is Aug. 3.
Program scheduled for disabled hunters
The Ohio Division of Wildlife, American Electric Power and the National Wild Turkey Federation will put on the annual Wheelin’ Sportsmen deer hunt for disabled hunters on Oct. 30-31 at the AEP ReCreation Land near McConnelsville.
The eighth annual hunt is open to any person with a disability who meets Ohio licensing requirements but does not have to be experienced in deer hunting. Each hunter will be partnered with an experienced hunting guide. Approximately 40 to 45 hunters will participate.

Free fishing derby slated Saturday
The Miami County Park District and the Stillwater Bass Club will hold a free fishing derby on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Stillwater Prairie Preserve.
Children 3 and older are invited to participate. Bring fishing poles, hooks, bobbers, sinkers. Bait and lunch will be provided. Club members will be on hand to assist. For information, call (937) 335-6273.
