The experienced players had to take a back seat last weekend in the Dayton Amateur Match Play Championship at Kittyhawk Golf Center.

Two young men playing in their first match play event — Nick Scott and Chris Woeste — reached the 36-hole final, and Woeste won the title by a 4 and 3 score.

The 21-year-old co-captain of the University of Dayton golf team won the second hole and never gave up the lead.

Woeste was 4-up after 18 holes, but received a strong challenge from the 17-year-old Scott, who trailed by only two after 27 holes. Woeste birdied holes 10, 12 and 15 to close out the match.

Scott, a senior at Northmont High School, had played splendid golf on Saturday with 6 and 4 victories over John Muir and Bryant Shillito, but his putts wouldn’t fall in the final.

Woeste, an Alter High School graduate, got a break on Saturday morning when his quarterfinal opponent didn’t show up, but it didn’t prevent him from getting up at 5:45 a.m. and hurrying to the golf course. He whiled away his time by playing nine holes with his dad in the morning and then defeated Roger Johnson in the afternoon semifinal.

Woeste, who is in a pre-physical therapy program at UD, has played most of his golf at the public courses, and has a driving range membership at Yankee Trace. He joined Walnut Grove Country Club this year and is participating in the club’s match play competition.

He has enjoyed being on the UD team, which plays its home matches at NCR Country Club. “Playing at NCR has been a blessing for me,” he said.

Woeste was Atlantic 10 Conference rookie of the year as a freshman. He had the third-ranking scoring average (75.7) on the UD team last season.

Sisters qualify
for U.S. Junior

Sisters Laura and Lindsey Murray of Tipp City both have qualified for the USGA Junior Championship July 19-24 at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst.

Laura, 17, qualified Monday, June 14, when she posted a 76 and won a playoff to grab the fourth spot at Purdue University’s Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.

Lindsey, 14, shot 78 and was one of five qualifiers Tuesday at Missouri Bluffs Golf Course in St. Charles, Mo.

The girls played at different venues so they wouldn’t be competing for the same spots. Lindsey, who also qualified last year, was playing on a sore foot with stitches in it. She cut it on some glass.

Scohy in top 10
at Mid-Am

A 69 in the second round enabled Jeffrey Scohy of Bellbrook to shoot 143 and tie for seventh in the Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship Thursday at Stonelick Hills Golf Course in Batavia.

Pete Samborsky of Dayton tied for 12th with a score of 144.

Women’s event
this week

The Dayton District Women’s Golf Association will hold its stroke and match play championships this week at Beavercreek Golf Club.

The 36-hole stroke play competition will be held on Monday and Tuesday. Match play begins with a single round on Wednesday. They’ll play two rounds Thursday, and the finalists will rest on Friday before playing the championship match on Saturday.

Thirty-six players have entered the competition. They include Molly Ginger of Centerville, who won both events in 2009. Lynn Grunkemeyer, who swept the titles in 2007, also is in the field along with former champions Diana Schwab, Cathy Jefferson and Daryl Nels.
