State offers short-term forestry jobs, education

The deadline is Sunday, Aug. 9, for anyone wishing to sign up for the new Ohio Woodlands Job Corps.

The program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will provide 132 1,000-hour jobs in seven state forests. Workers will remove invasive species on state forests, learn how to fight wildfires and receive extensive woodcraft training and certification.

“This program will help improve both our forests and our economy,” Gov. Ted Strickland said. “The stimulus dollars used to fund the Ohio Woodlands Job Corps is a wise investment that will encourage healthier forests while creating jobs in regions of our state that are severely challenged by underemployment.”

Ohio State University and Hocking College are partners in training for the program, which is administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Ohio photographers can enter a new contest sponsored by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The idea is to find the best Baltimore oriole photo for the new Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp to be issued March 1, 2010.

Each photo must be accompanied by a completed entry form and $12 entry fee. Photographers 17 and younger are exempt from the entry fee.

Entry fees may be paid by check or money order to the Wildlife Diversity Fund. Mail entries to: Tim Daniel, ODNR Division of Wildlife, 2045 Morse Road, G-1, Columbus, OH 43229.
