Health-care reform offers benefits to Ohioans

We thank U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown for voting  for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This bill brings us a step closer to quality, affordable health care for all Ohioans.

For too many, relief from soaring insurance premiums and health care costs, unfair insurance rules, and lack of access to care is long overdue. Although far from perfect, the Senate bill does expand coverage to 31 million Americans, including nearly 900,000 uninsured Ohioans.

Insurers will no longer be able to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions. We will have a clearer idea of how insurance companies spend our premium dollars, and small businesses will have tax credits available to them to help purchase coverage for their employees.

We urge Brown to continue to work throughout the conference committee process to improve the level of subsidies that will help low- and moderate-income Ohioans afford health care coverage.
