Re “Police to rely more on technology, citizen volunteers, chief says,” Dec. 10: If Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl is serous about ramping up citizen involvement in deterring crime in these times of fiscal constraints, he should look beyond the “neighboring assistance” teams he is currently relying on and follow the lead of cities such as Cleveland and Columbus, many sheriff offices and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which deploy auxiliary units.
Auxiliary officers, deputies and troopers, trained to a high standard by these agencies, have a far more visible presence and impact than toothless neighborhood teams, which, for the most part, operate in daytime hours only.
