Breast cancer not linked to abortion

Hot Topics

It is unfortunate that a story in the Dayton Daily News exposed readers to anti-choice distortions about abortion (“Surgeon stresses links between abortion, pill and breast cancer,” Oct.

Also, Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) Project headed by Lewis A. Chodosh, MD, PhD of the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center continues to explore ways to identify hormonal treatments that may mimic protective effects of full-term pregnancy on the breast. This research has received grants from the NCI. If there were no grounds for an abortion/breast cancer link, the NCI would not continue to support research in this regard.

The articles on PB and BC cited below outline biological reasons for the link - the removal of the child from the womb before full differentiation of the mother’s breasts. The placenta and child in the womb produce hormones hCG and hPL maturing the mother’s breasts to breast feed, thereby the protective effect of the full term pregnancy is realized. Remove the child, either by PB or by AB and the hormones are not secreted. J. Russo et al discusses this in the European Journal of Cancer.

While Melbye misclassified 60,000 women as having NOT had abortions when records indicated they did, used 1973 instead of 1939 as the year abortion was legalized in Denmark, violated the rule of temporality, tracking abortions from a different point in time than the tracking of breast cancer cases) they still observed a statistically significant increase in risk among women with a history of second-trimester abortion, which is in line with the hypothesis of Russo and Russo. Rebecca, her claims are specifically contradicted by the NEJM, as the link I gave shows. Further, you have presented no evidence for PB being indistinguishable from late-term induced abortion. And even if this were the case, the argument being made by the bishops is that all abortions cause breast cancer.

4 studies show premature birth (PB) before 32 weeks increases BC risk. PB is hormonally indistinguishable from late-term induced abortion. Here are 3 of the studies:

1)"Preterm delivery and risk of breast cancer." Melbye M, et al. Bri J Cancer 1999;80:609-13.
2)"Delivery of premature newborns and ..." Hsieh C-c, Wuu J, Lambe M, Trichopoulos D, et al Lancet 1999;353-1239.
3)"Pregnancy related protection ..." Vatten LJ, et al. Br J Cancer 2002;87:289-90.

Dr. Lanfranchi's claims regarding the link between abortion and breast cancer are backed up in such prestigious publications as the New England Journal of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Journal of Reproductive Medicine, British Journal of Cancer, The Lancet, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Let me try this again. LaFranchi is a catholic nutball. She has NO research to back up her claims.

From the articles available in the link I gave before:

Journal of Epidemeology and Community Health says there is no connection.

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention says there is no connection.

The New England Journal of Medicine says there is no connection.

Twenty years ago some researchers speculated there might be a connection. Subsequent research shows there isn't.

Interesting Ms. Copeland is worried about misleading people and yet doesn't even take the time to get her own facts straight. The DDN ran the story by their very own reporter who attended the event. According to the DDN article, the speaker was Dr. Angela Lanfranchi,a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and president of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute. Her research can be found at www.bcpinstitute.org (a link from the article).

As of 2006, eight medical organizations recognize that abortion raises a woman's risk for breast cancer, independently of the risk of delaying the birth of a first child . . . An additional medical organization, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, issued a statement in 2003 calling on doctors to inform patients about a "highly plausible" relationship between abortion and breast cancer. . . .

The American Cancer Society has a nice review of this issue. Here's the link:

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/c...

Their conclusion? "As of 2008, the scientific evidence does not support the notion that abortion of any kind raises the risk of breast cancer."

NARL has been nailed in a LOT of bogus science claims and now they try to complain and state this is bogus? Per NARL claims, if we do not include abortion in a public healthcare option then it bans abortion by private providers and all others too. So you trust these people making claims like that to be honest about the cancer and abortion link?

Of course they also believe men have no reproductive rights but DO have responsibilities as walking ATMs!

The truth that some research is showing a link to increased breast cancer in women who had abortions is painful to the powerful and well-funded pro-choice groups. But if they were truly concerned about women, wouldn't they want to know the truth?

A Chinese study was just released today showing a 17% increase in the risk of developing breast cancer following an abortion.

If you follow Mr Orangetree's link, you will find that the article shows a 50% to 90% increase in breast cancer risk associated with abortions.

There are over 20 articles in the scientific literature that show a link between abortion and breast cancer.

Ms Copeland should research her facts!

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is a right-wing organization. You can check out the abstracts at this link:

The overwhelming conclusion is that there is no connection.

The Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, the Polycarp Research Institute, and MaterCare International have concluded there is a statistically significant link between abortion and breast cancer.

Jane Orient, MD, Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons has stated, “While there is a difference of medical opinion concerning the abortion breast cancer link, there is a considerable volume of evidence supporting this link, which is, moreover, highly plausible. We believe that a reasonable person would want to be informed of the existence of this evidence before making her decision."

Pretty straight forward comment rather easily checked. The Science just doesn't support the outlandish claim of Abortion to Breast Cancer. And this coming from me, a Pro-Life kind of guy. Ditto on all these quack doctors who claim miracle cures by eating this or that. Dang people, it's called Medical Science...I know they taught you something about it back in High School. There is a reason that things are tested and peer reviewed before releasing to the General Public.
