One of the biggest challenges as Dayton’s mayor is breaking the perceptions created by more than a decade of inaccurate media reporting. On Aug. 11, I read the article at DaytonDailyNews.com titled, “Equipment business relocates from Dayton to Monroe.”
I checked our zoning maps to find that the business is actually located in Harrison Twp. The Dayton Daily News misled the public into believing that yet another business had left the city.
Also online, I read, “Stitches Galore declares bankruptcy” where the first line states, “Stitches Galore, LLC, which does business as The Blue Monkey in Springboro, Miamisburg and Middletown, on Aug. 4 filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dayton.”
Though the article was datelined Dayton, this business is not located in Dayton. The fact that it filed its bankruptcy papers in the county seat allows the DDN to mislead the citizens into believing that another business from the city of Dayton has failed.
People tell me every day that businesses are leaving Dayton. I have to assure them that many are not leaving Dayton. In fact, several opened within the city recently, but those got no media attention.
I don’t know if the DDN does this intentionally, but it has to stop if the region is to recover from the economic blows it has taken.
The hobby of Dayton-bashing is largely the result of this kind of reporting.
