Fair-trade policy would help Caterpillar

Re “It’s a done deal: Caterpillar will bring up to 600 jobs,” Dec. 8: It’s nice to see the Dayton Daily News’ enthusiasm for Caterpillar’s creation of jobs in our area. It would be even better for Caterpillar and our country if the DDN’s enthusiasm extended to a treaty that would make Caterpillar more competitive.

Right now, a misguided Senate and a partisan Sen. Sherrod Brown stand in the way of a fair trade treaty with Colombia. That treaty would eliminate tariffs that make Caterpillar products much more expensive for buyers in Colombia. We yield jobs and exports to Korean, Chinese, and Japanese competitors for a misguided animus toward free trade.
