Letter to the editor

Re “Levies a tough sell,” May 3: This front-page article quoted a taxpayer as saying that if the Centerville City Schools’ 5.9-mill operating levy passes, his taxes would grow by roughly $3,000 a year. For this to occur, one would have to own $1.65 million of Centerville/Washington Twp. real estate.

For each $100,000 of assessed property value, a homeowner would pay $15.06 per month or $180.69 per year in additional taxes with the passage of Issue 11, which is on the ballot today.

Passage of Issue 11 will provide the necessary fiscal stability that the board of education needs to continue to provide the level of excellence that we have earned in each of the last 10 years, when the district has received the highest state report card rating.

We urge citizens to get the facts by visiting our district Web site at www.

centerville.k12.oh.us.

Please vote yes on Issue 11.

What a stealthy levy. Nobody is advertising it. No signs up. Nothing. The only people to receive information on the levy are those whose kids attend Centerville city schools. If the levy fails then you can blame yourselves for lack of promotion. If it passes, what a firestorm the board will have created. Sneaking one pass the voters. I am afraid it will be twice as difficult to pass future levies with such a sneaky board.

Was at the polling place for a while chatting w/ a neighbor. Steady stream of voters. The poll workers also said that turn out was heavier than they were expecting, which does not bode well for the levy.

If the levy fails the administration will get what it deserves. No open forum. No plan B. A totally botched response to a misunderstanding over a cookie. No more blank checks for an unresponsive administration.

Just voted against the levy. Will not vote for a levy until Booher, Ullery and the school board (except Shroyer) are replaced. Shroyer and Smiga are the only people w/ integrity in the administration, and Smiga is leaving.

Maybe instead of criminally charging a student for a $1.30 cookie, the district should address what comes out of their cafeterias. The chocolate cake served on Earth Day was made with peanut oil! Even remote contact with nuts can be lethal to some students! The district should inform parents whose children have food allergies to not trust the districts cafeterias to keep their children safe.

These facts are also available on the website:

Centerville Cost per Pupil

Per the district's financial statements for the last four years reported:

04/05 $8,975
05/06 $9,533
06/07 $9,998
07/08 $11,262

That's a 25% increase in spending per student in the last four years. Our family budget has decreased in the last four years.

VOTE NO on ISSUE 11
