Re “Lutherans breaking with church over gay clergy,” Aug. 22: As stated in this article, some pastors say that they believe the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Lutherans who support allowing gays with partners into the ministry are increasingly placing political correctness ahead of Bible teachings.

Accusing others of just being politically correct is a tactic used to ridicule and belittle the thinking of those who differ on issues. The accusers are casting negative and often untrue labels on others and hoping they will stick.

Consider what is implied by what the pastors above are saying: Bible teaching is good; political correctness is bad because it is put ahead of Bible teaching. Since gays are the subjects, they are also suspect.

There are many examples of the Bible being used to teach in this way, including opposing civil rights, women’s rights, helping the sick and the poor, scientific research and the care of our environment.

St. Luke wrote this about Mary and the events of Jesus’ birth: “But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.” Pondering means to weigh in the mind with thoroughness and care.
