People are a positive thing about Dayton area

Re “ ‘Extreme Makeover’ house has become a real home,” Nov. 9: As I watched “Extreme Home Makeover” on Nov. 8, I couldn’t help feeling hometown pride in the way our area came together to help the Terpenning family. It was wonderful and inspiring to see the countless number of volunteers donate their time and energy, working around the clock, to build a home for a family they probably had never even met, but knew were in need.

That’s the Dayton, Ohio, most of us know.

The past year has certainly been a tough one for Daytonians, with the loss of GM and NCR, not to mention Forbes.com ranking Dayton as one of the nation’s fastest-dying cities. All the negative news revolving around Dayton makes it difficult to remember that there are still many positive things that make Dayton a great place to live, the most important being the people who call the Dayton area home.

The commenter about us all be Daytonians is right on. You can live in the burbs and still identify with Dayton as your city, as anybody that lives outside of any city would do. I live in Beavercreek but if travel outside of the region, I ALWAYS say I am from Dayton, Ohio. If you can't say you're from Dayton because you hate the city that much, then you are petty and pathetic.

This suburbanite knows that the sizeable majority of Dayton City residents are decent people who don't create and don't want the violence and other negative behaviors they see around them. A "few bad apples" with guns and drug money really can make it bad for the majority. Though I don't live in Dayton, I identify myself as a Daytonian.

Sorry, but Beavercreek, Oakwood, Centerville, Bellbrook, and Springboro are all supporting Dayton. If the people who lived in these communities didn't work at their jobs and pay their taxes then the Dayton residents wouldn't be able to get their free WIC coupons and welfare and they wouldn't be able to be out all night robbing houses and setting others on fire and selling their drugs. So maybe you should stop calling them small town hicks and thank them for paying for your welfare.

Hey Chi - your attitude is why the Dayton Region continues to sink into irrelevance in the national and global economic scale. Nobody outside of Dayton has ever heard of Beavercreek, Oakwood, Centerville or Springboro. Dayton is the identity for the whole region. Quit thinking like a small-town hick.

It wasn't really Dayton...it was Beavercreek.
