Seniors on Social Security need raises

Hot Topics

Re the letter “Don’t punish senior citizens,” July 4: I am a senior and I get Social Security every month. Seniors are hurting because some don’t get enough money to live on.

We need a raise every year. We don’t need our benefits to be cut.

The point was it had been created with payments starting after most would die and that was how it was sustainable. That and with a large population expansion continuing. We have a contraction of the population reducing the number who pay now and pay for a lot longer than we did before so it isn't sustainable. Back during Bush when he added more medical benifits the origional plan was to make the cutoff at $250,000.00 for them but democrats refused unless ALL were included so you know.

Like the idea of not giving people SS if they don't really need it, but would have trouble knowing where the cut off should be. Also I think the life expectancy now is somewhere around 77, so do you think we should make everyone work until 80?

No matter what we have to cut back in many areas. Increase the age to get SS also would help. When it was created, the average lifespan was 61 to give you an idea. Also anyone who receives a pension over $55,000 a year or so with it indexed to inflation should not receive SS. That is a start.

I'd like to take it back, but I don't see where I said that. What is your solution to making SS solvent?

sugarfree, care to back the claims I want it taken from people? You will not be able to since that is not what I said. I have pointed out that it is not sustainable to keep increasing benifits in SS, adding on more medical benifits, free medical for everyone and much more. The costs involved with what we already have is driving the country to bankruptsy and adding more will make any chance of recoverey even less likely.
