Washington Twp. happy with sheriff

We would like to clarify for our Washington Twp. residents several misconceptions outlined in the Dayton Daily News editorial, “County has point about sheriff patrols,” Oct. 28.

The DDN said that because of fiscal issues at the county level, Washington Twp. should consider contracting with Centerville for police protection.

For almost 30 years, Washington Twp. has provided police protection to its unincorporated residents by contracting with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Contract conditions and terms are negotiated each time an agreement is sought.

Washington Twp. and the sheriff have a four-year contract ending on Dec. 31, 2010. In 2009, Washington Twp. will pay the sheriff’s office $3.4 million for police protection. The total police budget in Washington Twp. is $4.1 million. The difference in dollar amount covers vehicles, supplies and materials.

Since our last public opinion survey, conducted in 2007, showed a 96 percent satisfaction with police protection the MCSO provides, we see no reason to change our contract.

While we certainly respect the police service that Centerville provides, the cost of police protection exceeds that of most jurisdictions in the county.

By contracting with a county agency, Washington Twp. is able to participate regionally in service delivery. We hope to continue our long relationship with the sheriff’s department.

Beats me. Ask someone at the city. I remember someone raising this during the merger study battle last year. I know the city shot it down (I think all the funds go into one master account and are allocated to the seperate funds later) but don't recall the details. I'm not an accountant so I can't speak to the nuances of the finances.

Too bad you don't play. The course is great.

Cville I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. But one last question since you seem to be well informed. Why are the back of my checks to pay for Centerville trash stamped Deposit Only Yankee Trace Golf? It's not one of those subsidy things you spoke of, where they use my trash money to supplement the existence of the golf course I don't use is it? Because it was such a good idea it should be fully self supporting by now

I live here so I am not going anywhere. I just want the Township to stop taking money out of my pocket --they should pay for their own police service like I pay for mine.

As to secession, it may make sense--I sure don't see any benefit in staying with the township

You're right Rob, Centerville has mentioned several times about wanting to secede, maybe thats where they no to go.

C'ville, if you are upset with the situation you can move to another county as an option.

I am aware that cost are rising on all fronts, gas, police, ems, fire etc...but do you really believe that the county subsidizes Washington Township over two million dollars a years just to make Centerville Police look bad?
